BANNED BOND: The Criterion Collection on DVD (by Fanfiltration)

Shortly after releasing the first 3 James Bond films on Laserdisc in a 2-disc CAV format in 1991, Criterion was asked by EON Productions (Producers of the James Bond Films) to recall all unsold Laserdisc product. It was felt that the audio commentary tracks on the 3 titles where unacceptable to Albert R. Broccoli, one of the original producers of the 3 films.
The 3 films had later been re-packaged by Criterion into a single disc format, and re-issued without any of the supplemental features. When MGM released their DVD’s of the first 3 films in the mid 1990’s, they contained different audio commentaries. Now, the original 2-disc Criterion versions go for big bucks on Ebay. I am proud to preserve these great films and their original Special Features on DVD for Bond Fans Everywhere.

Speaking of Bond, if you go on the Atlantis DC hubs, you can find some users with the first adaptation of Casino Royale, the black and white TV transmission from the 50s - which, I believe, is still officially unreleased. The quality is terrible, the protagonist is "CIA agent Jimmy Bond" and the guy who plays him is almost as bad as this Craig character will be , but it's a funny curiosity.

Sounds really good. So all those features that you've listed have never since been released? I look forward to hearing the BANNED commentaries, why were they considered 'unacceptable', do you know?

GOOD CALL!

The Original 1954 B&W Casino Royale is an extra on the MGM DVD release of 1967's Casino Royale Spoof. The problem with this version is that it's missing footage at the end, and is only 50 min long. A VHS tape of the 1954 T.V. Movie version was released by Spy Guise / Cara Video back in 1997. This VHS tape version had an approximate running time of 70 min, with the missing footage restored for the first time on home video. Now I belive Spy Guise could not get the rights to put this longer version out on DVD, and the VHS is the only way to see the entire program.

**EDIT** product currently available in general release.

I belive the problem was that the people on the commentaries speak their minds and don't hold back negitive comments. Like the screenwriter of From Russia With Love calling Ian Fleming a "Snob", or Director Terance Young recalling Chris Blackwell's Pot Smoking habbits. The MGM commentaries are just to NICE, and hold back any real objective comments. I belive that everyone should hear the originals, as that is the true history of the film as told by the people who made them. As a student of film history, I belive this information is priceless, and must be preserved for all time.

In a word for these 3: awesome, awesome, awesome. The commentaries, *and* the other extras sound enticing.

THX-1138, I was curious, why were those commentary tracks "banned"?
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

That question was addressed a couple posts above:

I see. Well, they could've added that disclaimer, "the commentaries here do not reflect MGM's opinion or view and are responsibility of the blah blah blah"

You can send me a PM.

They have everything that was on the Laserdisc.

The Movie (Letterbox)
The Original Mono Soundtrack
The Audio Commentary
The Music and Effects Only Audio Track (On Dr. No and Goldfinger)
Production info and stills

From Russia with Love had no Music and Effects Only Audio Track.

I don't belive any of these titles are in print at this time in any format in the U.S.

If you could get ahold of the deleted bit between Bond and the killer in FRWL about the 'movie', you'd be my favorite person forever.

has anyone heard of the upcoming video game where sean connery will reprise the role of james bond?

he's doing a voiceover for the cut scenes.

Maybe when the game comes out someone could take all the game cutscenes and edit them into a dvd movie.

do these criterion releases have the connery commentary track?

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

Connery is not on the commentary track as far as I can remember.

I think it's only Terance Young (Dr. No and From Russia with Love), Peter Hunt, Ken Adam, Richard Maibaum, Guy Hamilton (Goldfinger)

And I hope that video game with Connery is better then others to come out with the Bond name on them. Just as with the films, they have had some real stinkers. It would be sad if his last role in the world of James Bond was a video game made for people who had not even been born when his last film as James Bond came out (Never Say never Again 1983). Connery is not getting any younger and the last time I saw him (on T.V. a few months ago) he did not look too good. It may just be that time for him to cash in and make some extra bucks to leave his family for when he is gone. Not like he is short of bucks... And so far, it looks like he is not going to be a part of Indy 4.

That is so GREAT!

Did you want me to scan the Laserdisc's Ggatefold cover art and text for you? I can send it along on a CD-R with your Banned Bond set if you need me to.
