Exactly what I thought, right after thinking “that is the exact opposite of what the character is.”

I find fan art mostly very depressing.

A picture which seeks to undo much of the hard work the film’s makers put into the character; forget progress and breaking of genre stereotypes, a young female character simply must be SEXXXY.

The artist clearly has some skill, but doesn’t appear to understand (or perhaps care about) the subject matter at all. Yeah, that’s depressing.

It’s just fan art; had this been official art I would completely understand how it can undermine what the character is about but it’s not that serious.

and at least it’s not this type of fan art…

Really? Because about 15% of her midriff is visible, that painting is sexist and a misrepresentation of the character? It’s an imagining of Rey in a future adventure, in an imaginary future costume. It looks just fine to me and has captured that quiet strength that we saw on Daisy/Rey’s face when she finally “Feels the force” and takes down Ren. e.g.

I’m sorta picturing her standing still, at one side of a stone circle while Ennio Morricone plays on the soundtrack 😉

In any case, there’s a difference between sexy and sexist as any fictional Rock&Roll publicist will tell you. Now THIS is sexist SW fanart…

The platform heels on the second one are the worst, I have no words …and I don’t even know how to quantify this…

VIZ TOP TIPS! - PARENTS. Impress your children by showing them a floppy disk and telling them it’s a 3D model of a save icon.

And I’m pretty sure hardly anyone would have a problem with the first 3 Leia fan pictures because of the Gold Bikini in ROTJ. If you don’t have a problem with the 4th then I have bad news for you lol

EDIT:

And I’ve never heard anyone being in an uproar over this shit

Yeah, because they’re the only ones who might mention how ridiculous it was when that happened.

And they’re also the same people who didn’t champion Rey for being the most competent female character in some time if not ever. I’m just saying…they’re inconsistent.

Also when I said “anyone” I meant us. As in the Star Wars fanbase.

Granted, this clearly isn’t the thread for subtleties, but there’s a difference between female characters who are portrayed by their creators as helpless and decorative (Leia and Padme at various times) being depicted as such by other artists, and those who are purposefully designed to be progressive still being mentally undressed by sweaty fanboys.

And what constitutes a ‘radical’ feminist anyway?

I’m pretty sure these “sweaty fanboys” among a lot of other people who aren’t even into Star Wars like we are were mentally undressing her when they saw the movie and even before that. Daisy Ridley is a beautiful girl you know…

Also just her hips are kind of exposed; it’s not like the artist was showing ass and tits. It’s more sensual than explicitly sexual. If that makes any sense lol

More awesome art, less talk and crappy pics.

That Rey art was cool, I really like her face/expression. Nicely captured.

(some of these may have been posted)

Here’s some nice EU art from an official SW artist: http://wraithdt.deviantart.com/gallery/?catpath=/

Celebration Europe poster:

Hmm, why does all the conventions get all the cool classic-style posters while the theatres end up with those generic photoshops?

Marketing reasons, I’m sure. If nothing else, it’s cheaper to pay some intern to photoshop some promotional images together and bash out a poster in fifteen minutes than it is to pay someone like Drew Struzan and then have to wait for a few weeks.

Research says people are more likely to buy a movie or a videogame if it has Photoshopped or CGI cover, rather than drawn cover

Han: Hey Lando! You kept your promise, right? Not a scratch?
Lando: Well, what’s left of her isn’t scratched. All the scratched parts got knocked off along the way.
Han (exasperated): Knocked off?!

Ditto.

I’m not saying your wrong, but I think that most fans would either prefer or don’t mind a painted poster, and quite frankly with something as popular (and I would also argue “retro”) as SW I don’t really image that too many people would really have cared, or perhaps even noticed (I can’t recall anyone making a fuss ver the PT posters). I think that as long as it says “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” people would go see the movie int he theatres and buy the DVD/Blu-ray regardless. Heck some of the DVD/Blu-ray covers are basically just the title anyway and the Teaser poster was literally just the title.
I have a feeling that this is one of those thing that marketers just assume about it’s audience. It’s kind of like how action movie posters always has the hero with his back turned to the camera or how certain actors look the same on every poster they’re on. I can’t really think of any good reasons for these cliches, it’s just one of those things that nobody bothers to change.
