Attempt to restore the original 20th Century Fox logos (Released)

This is a hack. I don’t think it’s very good but it’s my first try. I think the timing may be wrong.

Nonetheless, I’m sure I have the logo right (note the tilted zero). It comes from here and purports to have been ripped from the “Alien” PAL DVD.

The resolution of the video matches the resolution at which I am planning to encode the final reconstruction (and the resolution at which I encoded the Dr. Gonzo-derived AVIs I have of teh OOT).

That is great work, Molly. I had done one awhile back in hopes of fixing up that Fox Intro logo. The lucasfilm and Long time ago logos are both availible on the Empire of Dreams disc. All the files have to be stabilized, which is easier said than done. To stabilize it, you have to go frame by frame and make sure the image does not shift up or down at all. Basically, it would easiest to create a slideshow and open it in Adobe photoshop, make sure all the frames lay over top each other, and then export it using Adober Premiere

Anyways, here is a scaled down version of the cleaned up Fox Logo I made using an old LD rip. The artifacts are only there because of the XVID quality.

Yeah, I used Empire of Dreams for that part of the reconstruction.

It is easy to stabilise using Mokey or Boujou, or use the tracker in Eddie - you can pick your points and automaticically stabilise it - the result is rock solid.

Ok, well I have completely restored the opening logo up until the point of STAR WARS using Adobe Premiere. I had to leave off the sound because it increases the file size exponentially. Also, the artifacting you see is because I compressed the video. A straight stream does not have these problems.

Also, are we all in agreement that we should use the original Alfred Newman sound?

Yes. I pulled my audio track off the SE OST.

Alright, so here is what I did. I took the AC3 file directly from the DVD that is currently released and attached it to my XVID. This is the finished product, so to speak.

Suggestions and the like are welcome.

A beware on a 3.4 megabyte file? What can of ancient technology are you guys using. That looks pretty good for a first try Molly. Keep it up!

I'm doing what I can. I don't expect my own restoration to be anywhere near perfect, just perhaps, an inspiration to other film hackers to improve on my own work (similar to mverta except I will probably *release* mine, in some format).

The latest version of Premiere pro actually has 2D3's image stabiliser product built in, I haven't tried the bundled version, but their standalone image stabilising products are extremely easy to use and do a good job. Worth a look.

Has anyone found a good restored source image for the Fox Logo? I've just got my slave drive back up and operational and want to take another crack at de-SE'izing ESB and possible ANH.

The mini-doc "The force is with them" has the fox logo that went in front of the 1977 release of SW.

It's only a few frames, however.

But any fox movie thats cinemascope that was made around the same time should have the right logo.

"or use the tracker in Eddie"

What's this?

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

Can anyone give me a definitive answer on the Fox Logo that originally ran before Empire Strikes Back and a good source to find it at?

The answer to your question would be the same as the answer for the original Star Wars.

I suggest the original DVD version of Alien as a possibility.
