Attack of the Clones - Centropy Theatrical Telesync "Remastered" (Released)

After tracking down the original VCD and figuring out how to extract the .mpg files after many fail attempts, I decided to somewhat clean up the ancient bootleg. I put it back to 2:39.1 from 4:3, did some minor colour correction to make it a lttle less washed out and adjusted the perspective so it wasn’t at an upward slope.

(^ The prosthetic hand only twitches its fingers a few times, accompanied by subtle mechanical sound effects, before panning up. In the digital and home media versions, this is replaced by a CGI prosthetic that takes her left hand.)

There are a few small differences between the theatrical and subsequent home video releases as there always are with Star Wars films, so I thought this would be worth doing.

I believe there was also an SVCD released by Centropy of this same recording. Would be a much better source to analyze, but I haven’t heard of anyone having retained a copy this long.

So was Anakin’s hand a physical prop in the 35mm version while it was CG in the digital version?

You’re missing the point. The 35mm release print is not the same as the digital release version.

Really? They are different? I mean obviusly I realize 35mm prints would have had to be made. Not every teather had digital projection in 2002 after all but I thought it was exactly the same as the digital version.

Nope. The primary difference is Anakin’s mechanical hand at the wedding ceremony - in the 35mm version it just sits there and twitches a bit, in the digital version it grabs Padme’s hand.

I think there are a few other differences too, but I’m not 100% on what they are.

Different order of shots in 2 scenes, removed speeders in one scene etc.

The different order of shots was a fuckup on the Blu-Ray, not a 35mm/digital theatrical difference.

And it’s hard to say what else, because we don’t have the digital copy. The DVD came only a few months later. It had the hand change of the digital version, and no one knows which others.

No one knows about the speeders in the digital, because of course no one would have made note of that (as they did the hand). The dialogue changes would have also likely been noted had they been made by that point.

Yeah, the garage scene is almost certainly a DVD addition.

Do we know if the cinema DTS we have is for the 35mm version, the DLP version, or both?

The part when he’s talking about killing the sandpeople and Padme said “To be angry is to be human” and most of that scene was a DVD addition IIRC

I tought all those changes were changes made for the dvd. Where are you getting this information from?

The hand thing was well documented in 2002 when the movie came out. Honestly, it’s the only 35mm/DLP theatrical difference I’m certain of. (I saw it both ways - made a special family trip to Chicago just to see the digital version for the second viewing - but I was 13, so I can’t guarantee accurate recollections other than that.)

Was Jango Fett twirling his gun in the 35mm version? I distinctly remember seeing that when I saw it in theaters.

That would be a worthwhile resource, but I doubt it would garner enough interest/donations for Poita or someone else to get it scanned, let alone buy it…
