‘Artist’ Chains Up Dog Until It Dies… Is This Art? Or Animal Abuse?

Definitely abuse. The animal wasn't asking to be captured, chained up, and deprived of all food. Dying of starvation probably isn't fun. If dogs are overpopulated down there, then there are definitely kinder ways to kill this particular dog.

Also, I see practically no way in which this is art. I liked the one poster on that page who said that chaining a dog to a wall is about as artistic as someone feeding the dog against the supposed artist's will. Pointless.

[edit: fixed "god" to dog at one point.]

I'd put his ass in jail in the beat of a heart, no doubt, that sorry as sicko. He don't deserve half of what should have been given to that dog!!!

I think it's pretty shocking and it clearly shows some cultural(?) differences. I'm not sure what is worse, the "artist" using the dog or the people who don't do anything about it.

There is really nothing that could even be considered anything like art in this. Animals can suffer and die in the wild by natural occurences. Does that mean if I dig up a tree and place it in a gallery I could claim it to be art? That would be absurd. A tree is something that occurs naturally, I had nothing to do with any of it, therefore I cannot claim it as my work of art. This whole dying dog nonsense is the same thing, natural occurences, the "artist" did nothing. If he drew a picture of a suffering dog, that would be different, just as it would be different if I drew a picture of the tree. Man, if this had been in America...
Arnie is right about it showing some cultural differences, I think in most modern, well developed countries this would not fly too well.

How about chaining the artist in a corner and letting him starve? Then draw and quarter every person that went to the exhibit and did nothing about it. Seriously, the "artist" and every person that saw that and did nothing are just as guilty.

Wow. I can't think of anything more horrible. How does anyone get off calling something like that "art"? That's like calling the Inquisition or any other type of purposeful torture "art". Yeah, what a brilliant "artist" this guy is. I'm sure he put a lot of thought and effort into that one. Bet he had to reach deep into his soul and expend hours of effort to sit on his ass while a dog starved. Brilliant! Got a regular fuckin' Picasso over here!

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I think he's just calling it art as a legal defense to try and somehow lighten the act, sort of the way people can claim insanity as a way of explaining heinous actions for a lighter sentence (ie if the accused did what he did in the belief that it was acceptable " as art" then his actions are somewhat less responsible). The flaw in that logic that its not art OR abuse, because one is not exclusive of the other, especially since the whole artistic merit defense is entirely subjective, at the very best one could say its both artistic and abusive--murderous, actually--and hence the existance of the former is not explainable of the latter. I mean the family in Texas Chainsaw Massacre could use that excuse--their human skin lampshades and bone chairs are obviously signs of a high degree of craftsmanship...

lol, good point. Every object and every action that functions physically also has a form and therefore must have aesthetic qualities in some way (even if that way is evil or at least compromised by evil). The best art is uplifting to the mind of man, however, and this idea of "art" (or context for art) should never be something we desire to see, if you ask me.
