Old School Adventure

Remember back in the day, when Lucasarts did more than just make crappy Star Wars games *coughLego**StarWars**coughROTSgamecough**. Whatever happened to those old-school adventure games like "Sam and Max" and "Full Throttle" and especially the Monkey Island series. I even heard that sequels for both Sam and Max and Full Throttle were in the works but then later cancelled. Am I the only one that misses the OLD Lucasarts?

I for one loved the Indiana Jones games that they put out, Last Crusade and The Fate of Atlantis, and their "flight-sim" Star Wars Series: X-Wing, TIE Fighter, XW vs TIE, X-Wing Alliance(though they aren't exactly old-school Adventure).

Now all they make is arcadey Star Wars games with wonky controls.

And of course we also can't forget both "Maniac Mansion" and its sequel, "Day of the Tentacle". I recently discovered a program called ScummVM that runs old SCUMM games on newer systems that they were never designed for, such as Windows XP, Mac, or Linux. Now I've been able to play all those classics for the first time in many years.

Yeah, that's too bad.

A Star Wars fighting game could be awesome if done correctly.

They may not be the best games ever... But hardly "arcadey Star Wars games with wonky controls."

I will admit that it was a bit of a broad generalization. It looks to me as if Lucasarts hit a slump and is climbing its way back up, which is good. But let us not forget the travesty that was "Star Wars: Force Commander".

I personally had high expectations for the ROTS game, but was let down because it was basically a ripoff of the LOTR movie-games. Except not quite as good. The voice actors sound like their extremely tired, it's 3 a.m. at the office, and they wanna go home.

Honestly, to me the only noteworthy Star Wars games to come out recently are the KOTORs (not being a SWG nerd like a lot of people I know my age).

I didn't think Rebel Assault 2 was that bad, but then again, the last time I played it was when I was around 8 years old, so I could be wrong.

Take Star Wars: Battlefront, for example. Excellent idea, mediocre execution. It's pretty fun, yes (for a while, anyway), but it is a pretty buggy game. The ship combat was terrible, and the Dark Troopers were way too wimpy, not to mention poor collision detection. Hopefully they'll have these bugs worked out for Battlefront 2.

I personally wish they'd stop with the Star Wars games and hurry up with Monkey Island 5 already!!

By the way, does anybody else here remember "Grim Fandango"?

Does anyone know where I can find a torrent (or any download for that matter) of the "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" SCUMM game? I've looked everywhere for it, but no luck.

LOOM and Day of the Tentacle would be nice too.

I played the Demo of Grim Fandago years ago, and I thought it was great.

Sure wish there was a torrent up somewhere.

Try here, they have Last Crusade:

I got the torrent of Grim Fandango off www.mybittorrent.com , and it works great. I had to burn it onto a CD to get it to work first, but then again, I'm not that computer literate, so I'm sure you could find some way around that.

Do you use ScummVM to run the CD version of "The Secret of Monkey Island"? If so, how did you get the sound to work? The Read-me says something about ripping the mp3 off the CD and enabling MAD capabilities on ScummVM and a bunch of other stuff, but like I said before, I'm not that computer literate, so I don't know how the hell to do that. Any help?

By the way, was that Last Crusade game the Graphic Adventure (the one I'm looking for) or the side-scrolling action game, cuz I can't get ScummVM to run it. If I have to use DosBox, then I'm screwed cuz I don't know how in God's name that thing works.
