Are you gonna buy 'em? — Page 3

A dvd set that currently rates 1.5 stars on amazon (out of 5)?
I never knew what anamorphic was a week ago, but at least I learned they will be shoddy

Don't get me wrong, I'm not happy about the treatment it's getting.
But am very excited it's finally being recognized, and put on DVD.

And I will continue to support letter-writers, and educating the public about it.

Someone needs to email LFL and tell them to look at Amazon.com.

This may be the fall of Lucas...

Yeah, but, then again we don't know if the mainstream is pissed that the OOT is getting a non-anamorphic transfer, or that the mainstream is uneducated and pissed that LFL is releasing the trilogy on DVD for a third time in a year and a half.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I vooted yes. If I buy this set, which i probably will, it is because this is the best thing I can get right now over my VHS copies.

Ahh, hell, I won't get these. George Lucas can say whatever he wants, but I'm not going to trust that I can motivate him with my money anymore. i'm through being ripped off by his stupid decisions. I'll wait until blue ray and hope something real is done by then. Otherwise, I'll put all of my hope into fan preservations.

...maybe.

Well, I've added my review to each of the amazon DVDs. I wanted it to be respectful and yet even-handed. It said the following:

"The chief selling point for this release is that it supposedly contains the original version of the film on the bonus DVD. This is not true. It in fact contains the Laserdisc version of the film made in 1993 on DVD and is not a dedicated DVD transfer of the original quality (if it were, it would most likely be released in the anamorphic DVD format).

The only people who should buy this DVD are those who don't mind wasting money and those who either don't care about the original trilogy or want to support the original trilogy even knowing the details of this obviously substandard DVD release."

I feel undecided, but I know I'll end up buying it. Lucas can't be trusted. He says that this will be the only time it's available...but there's no way to know whether that's the truth or not. Better use the $60 (or however much it will cost) to go ahead and get it. DAMN, I hate this shit!
I'm just looking forward to the awesome preservations that will come out of it.

So far my VHS tapes are in top notch shape. I've watched them tons too, but not for a couple of years. I have the faces VHS, and home taped widescreen (erm, or should I say 'letter-boxed' now that I know the difference?) from the sci-fi channel.

I have the definitive collection laserdiscs which have some flaws in them but are quite watchable (white specs popping up all over the screen when watching the films) and I also have the "Faces" laserdiscs, which are in top notch sahpe and look terrific on my old circa 1995 TV. I almost don't see a need to buy these DVD's. But with that said, I am a sucker and will most likely pre-order the set of them. I just feel like I need to do this if I am ever going to see a quality release of the films released on some higher end video standard (whatever that may be when and if they are ever remastered correctly and released some day in the future.) We fans really need to support this realease. As mediocre (or below mediocre) as it may be....if we ever want to see a better copy in the future, we have to show that not only are we talking up the demand, we are putting our money where our mouths are and actually showing Luca$ that these films matter, in a way that would matter to him.

I will be buying them because I don't own a widescreen t.v., or HDTV so I can deal with the fact that they are only letterboxed. In the event that someday I might have bought one though it would've been nice to have them anamorphic. The 2004 set displays well on mt t.v. even though is a 4:3 screen, because my rca dvd player alows me to set it to letterbox 4:3 cropping the image, I know I lose some of the image on the sides but I cannot afford a HDTV even at the cost of 1,500 dollars.

Besides the fact that these were the versions, (the definitive collection) that I had hoped would come to dvd since it's advent.

that being said I do not understand lynn hale refering to the original negative being altered in such a way that we can never have the original orginals again in HD format or even a theatrical re-release because they have been destroyed. I have a horror of an image of good old georgie standing over a trim bin cutting the original negative and throwing away those scenes he thought was not his vision.

I suppose he can't stand the fact that the first two star wars films the original versions were slated by the government as to be preserved, and that they are the versions AFI nominated on it's list of top 150 films.

They claim they can't afford the funds to retore them?, cannot or will not?

Then how come I was at theforce.net the other day and saw that he put a lot of money into cutting together a 3D version of phantom menace for release in 2007, a.k.a. the new cgi yoda version as seen on revenge of the sith's second disc. In fact I have a sneaky suppition that we will see special editions of the prequels before we know it, and uber HD versions of the 2004 cgi crappy versions with new tinkering.

Dare I say it it appears now that he apparently was the luckiest one trick pony ever with his success of star wars, will continue to tinker with his films.

Of course in his college years and during the original star wars trilogy it appeared he was a genius of design and editing, but that has been superceded by computer graphics and shoddy storytelling.

I can sum up the release of the original versions in one word bittersweet, I wanted to shout for joy at the annoucement but was also livid with anger over the treatment of the most beloved films of my childhood by Lucas. and his shitting all over them publicly and not offering them in an anamorphic 16:9 remastered form.

Unfortunately I have to. My LD player died a couple of years ago and even though I have the LDs (both Japanese and Fox), I can't watch them. Trying to find .avi copies of the LDs on the net has been less than successful for me. Lucas has me by the balls :-(

No one in the preservation forum is willing to hook you up? Have you tried myslpeen.net?

I tried requests on one of the Star Wars newsgroups but my ISP has crappy retention.

I'll give myspleen.net a shot. Thanks.

I voted undecided. I want the DVD's for these reasons: 1) Because I want a decent-looking version (it won't be anamorphic but its better than a VHS or bootleg) and 2) because I want a legal version so I can never get hammered for having a bootleg and 3) because a DVD will last forever. Unless you just leave it lying on a table, it won't wear out like a VHS. Yes I have bootlegs, adn they're on DVD's, but they weren't burned onto quality DVD's that look like they could last and 4) they might be the last ever release.

Ah, but I voted undecided, right? Well, I also have reasons for NOT buying them. 1) Non-Anamorphic. 'Nough-Said. 2) It also contains the 2004 versions. No thank you, I already have these. 3) Money. I can't keep shelling out cash! 50 for the 2004 set (though, granted, this was a birthday present) and another 30 for bootlegs. That's 70 so far. If I shop smart, and I have been looking around, it'll be another 40 for this set. 110 just to reach a definitive DVD. 4) It would almost sicken me to have a set where the OOT is on disc two as a bonus feature. I can imagine the menu now....
LEGO STAR WARS II TRAILER
OOT FILM
GAME DEMO
Of course, I have come up with a solution to this so that it at least isn't on disc 2. I take out the OOT disc, make my own cover art on the computer, and give it its own case, leaving the 2004 version to rot, or to lie on my desk waiting to be sold on Ebay.

For all these reasons, I am undecided, though I am leaning toward purchasing them.

I know for a fact that I will buy these DVDs if they are a decent transfer and better than a bootleg's quality to at least some degree. I don't like that fact, but it is a fact. :\

I'll be buying....if I'm not utterly broke by then. It'll still be the best versions of the OOT on disc and not to mention I feel a little bad for having downloaded so many "preservations" of these films. So I guess now that these are officially coming, there's no reason for me not to get them.

I'd very much like to buy them, but I don't know if I can justify spending my money on releases that are not up to industry standards. Of course, then there is the endless catch 22 of this release possibly determining future releases.
