Are we wasting our lives? — Page 2

I think Kafka can teach us more about ouselves than Nietzche. But that's me.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

You really are a hardcore nihilist aren't you ric?

I like Kafka too, add his name to that list.
"The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country." - Goering.

"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it." - Goebbels.

"In times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act." - Orwell.

I wrote my senior research project on Kafka's Metamorphosis. His is excellent stuff. Ill admit to having more interest in Philosophers after Descartes. Long live Reason. (Which isnt to say that those before him were daft and useless - quite the contrary).

Reg - I think the soft spot I have for Dante is mainly due to my interest in literature, poetry, and linguistics. (Currently Im double majoring in English and Philosophy - though it seems obvious by the last few posts on this thread). His la Vita Nuova is incredible, IMO.
I would compare Virgil's approach to Dante somewhat, and say his significance is similar to Plato, Aristotle, and Socrates - valuable for knowing the roots, but slightly less insightful then contemporary works.

Hmm i dont know, if i was you bossk i would try to capture an oveview of philosophical history first by reading through a text like the one i mentioned above. A lot of philosophy is somewhat reactionary based, so it helps to understand what the author your reading is reacting to, whether that be culutural, another writer, historic events, etc. Also a basic text will introduce you to the basic terminology of philosopy, as well as a synopsis of the thinkers past, providing a context to work from. Once you have the basic grasp on the big picture you can start to focus more on the thinkers that interest you, diving into there works and beginning to interpret them yourself.

oh and you dont have to pay full price for that book, check with your local used books stores, or on ebay. My original copy of the book got stolen, but i got it off ebay for $6 shipping and all.

EDIT: I would also recommend taking some time to read more than just western philosophy. The Tao te Ching, Art of War, Book of the 5 Rings, just to name a few are all great reads.

Also if you are interested in religious text at all check out this site. www.sacred-text.com. It is by far the largest religious text archive i have ever run across on the net. Best of all its free...

enjoy

While in college, I dabbled a fair amount in philosophy. I did your requisite Plato, Sarte, Camus (a personal fave) ect. I even ended up writing a paper refuting St. Anselm's ontological argument, which...didn't go over well at all with the professor. Anyway, I would say that, while I liked philosophy, I had trouble focusing on specifics. But then I came upon a book. Not just a book but the literary holy grail of all things philosphical. It was such a powerful cocktail of logic and wisdom that I felt humbled just reading it and haven't looked back since. What book, you ask? Why that book is Crazy From the Heat by David Lee Roth.
