It would be an interesting experiment for someone who has never seen the OT to watch TFA.

It would most likely ruin his Star Wars experience. I would feel guilty simply if I did not try to convince a friend to watch OT first, let alone purposely do some “interesting experiments”.

Someone is bound to drag their non fan boyfriend/girlfriend or relative to see it. You’d have to be living in a cave not to be slightly familiar with the basics of Star Wars. There’s hardly anyone who doesn’t know of Darth Vader or what a stormtrooper is.

And lest we forget, the original film dropped us into the middle of a conflict we knew little about.

Well that wasn’t really the point here. It wasn’t a matter of someone randomly dragging their friends to see it without seeing OT and unintentionally ruining their potential OT experience. You said it would be an interesting experiment to do so, which implies doing it on purpose for the sake of experiment.

And knowing Vader is a “bad guy from Star Wars” is something completely different than experiencing Vader’s character through OT at first hand. The same applies to other Star Wars basics.

Some people today are really jaded and can’t easily accept older films. For some, seeing TFA first might be the best way to get invested in the saga enough to watch the rest.

I only noticed one prequel reference in TFA so my answers no.

What are the prequel references in the film? I counted a few, but don’t almost none are direct and some might not even be intentional.

MILD SPOILERS:

  • Lor San Tekka mentions bringing balance to the force (was this a concept before the PT?). There’s also the speculation going around that his first line is a shot at the PT (“This will begin to make things right”) which is entirely possible
  • Kylo Ren asks Hux if they should be using a clone army instead of the brainwashed recruits they have (feel like this was put in so those expecting the stormtroopers to be clones wouldn’t be confused)
  • Maz mentions the Sith (a word that has been a part of Star Wars since the original, but only spoken on film before in the PT)
  • Ewan McGregor provides a voice-over for Rey’s vision (probably the only direct acknowledgement of the existence of the PT honestly)
  • This is conjecture, but I feel like Kylo’s hair-do might be purposefully reminiscent of Anakin’s in ROTS (in-universe as well as behind the scenes)
