Any truth to this? Lucas is releasing the three unaltered ORIGINAL Star Wars films?

Original Star Wars back: Han Solo shoots first! (Again…) We’re reporting tomorrow that Lucas is releasing the three ORIGINAL Star Wars films – without the digital tweaks and effects – on DVD after all. And, once again, Han Solo will be shown shooting first.

I had a bit of this wrong in the original posting, so lemme try again:

– As we all know, in the original STAR WARS, Han Solo pulls his gun and shoots Greedo in the Cantina scene.

– When the film was restored and digitally tweaked for a new theatrical run, Lucas added a moment where Greedo fires first, misses, and then Solo shoots Greedo. As if it was self-defense.

– Fans objected, and when the film hit DVD in 2004, Lucas tweaked it yet AGAIN, and this time Solo and Greedo shot simultaneously.

– In the upcoming DVD (due in September), the original scene is back. Greedo warns about Jabba, Solo tries to wave him off and then pulls his gun and shoots Greedo dead.

By the way, the story says the transfer of the ‘original’ version will not be as pristine and scrubbed as the restored DVDs. In fact, at one point there was talk the originals no longer existed.

Anyhow, once we publish (in USA TODAY), tomorrow, I’ll post the entire story.

there's no mention of anything on starwars.com, or theforce.net about this yet.

as much as i'd love to believe this, i won't be convinced until I hear an official announcement from Lucasfilm

however, i'm definately anxious to read tomorrow's USA Today

Well, if it is true (I would not get my hopes up)... we will know in September...

Please mr Lucas, prove my gut-feeling wrong when I say that the originals will never see the light of day. *fingers crossed*

I'd love this to be true. But I will only believe it when I have the official boxset of the DVDs.

Please don't be false hope this time.

If so, and the original prints aren't as great looking, it shouldn't be too hard to edit them to get the best of both words (picture quality, and 100% original versions).
I probably would edit them anyway to have my own sick, twisted fan-hybrid version anyway if this were true. But honestly I'd never watch it if the original versions were on DVD!!

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

OK. Lets say this is true. First, is he only talking about the Greedo scene being 'original'? And, what audio mix do you think it will have? Will the colour be correct? Will the levels be correct? Will we ever be happy?

I hope it is true, but I am not gonna hold my breath.

P.S.

On the other hand, I never thought I'd see Gilmour and Waters on the same stage again.

Why september? Is that the 29 and 1/2 anniversary? This sounds too weird to be true. Of course I said the same about Hayden being put in ROTJ. And I was wrong. Damn.

Oh man, I am hoping that this is true, but I'll believe it when I see it. Right now, I'm not even going to loose sleep over it.

And even though the "originals" don't exist anymore, that must just be in Lucas' mind because there is a copy in the salt mine vaults in the USA government compound thing. I know this because I saw a History Channel on the mine and they specifically mentioned that "From The Wizard of Oz to Star Wars" is in the Hollywood film vault.

And saying that it won't be as clean as the "cleaned up" version is stupid. They had to clean the original before they went back and messed it all up anyway.

Tomorrow, we will see.

In a way I don't want this to be true because all those hard working people that do the LD rips (ie the x0 team) will be more or less redundant. Then again if they screw up the brightness or gamma and all the colouring as in the 2004 versions perhaps we could still see life in the old LD's.

I still will take it with a grain of salt, but think about that Lucas has released something to DVD since 2001:

2001 - TPM
2002 - AOTC
2003 - Indiana Jones Trilogy
2004 - Star Wars OT SE
2005 - ROTS
2006 - O-OT?
2007 - 30th Anniversary Box Set with more changes?
2008 - HD-DVD?

Come on, the guy is genius when he wants us to cough up the money.

The link doesn't work for me.
Much as I would be happy if this were true, I'd keep a giant grain of salt handy.

Whoa.
Okay, *IF* this turns out to be true, we really need a proper effort to thank George for his generosity.

The Digital Bits is also reporting this in their rumor mill that it's been confirmed by their sources and should be officially announced in the next week.

Should I sell my oot collections on eBay before the word gets out?

Wait, maybe Lucasfilm downloaded them from MySpleen and is repackageing them and selling them. After all, they don't exist anymore.

So I guess I'll head back to the Pink Floyd forum, where I used to post before knowing ot.com, to ask for the band to re-group and make another album. I mean, obviously, forums asking for something WORK!
