Yeah def open matte, looks in great condition
What appears to be a nice print has popped up on Ebay.
There’s a youtube clip linked in the auction.
So, would there be any point in trying to nab this? I think the potential is there for another grindhouse-esque presentation ala Puggo Grande.
The film was shot open matte, and I compared the clip to Blu Ray screencaps to confirm this, so no apparent aspect ratio worries here.
I don’t think the bidding would get to Star Wars levels of insanity, (especially this soon after Christmas) but with film collectors you never know…

I didn't even know about the Director's Cut until recently, it sounds pretty terrifying.

It's an interesting artistic choice, (if you believe it was Walter Hill's original intention) but it's much too jarring if you've grown up with the original. The new prologue alone made me think I was watching 300 by mistake. ;)
One of my favorite shots, that long walk down the beach at the end, is pretty much ruined being turned into a still comic book page.

I hated the comic book panel transitions. They felt like an element from another film.
The original version used Akira Kurosawa-esque wipes, which was more consistent stylistically with the rest of the film.
I think the prologue is kind of silly too, but it's only a few seconds, it's over and done with quickly.
“That’s impossible, even for a computer!”

I've only seen it once, on AMC, the theatrical cut (well, the edited-for-TV theatrical cut, that is). I'd like to see it again, so I will definitely have to make sure I grab the old theatrical DVD release.
