Any Sugestions on A DVD Cover Program?

Author

I'm trying to figure out a good program to use to create my own covers for the OOT DVD's. Any suggestions on a good program, or something I can just do on a Windows Office program?

Thanks.

There is no specific cover creator program, but you can / should use Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro.

I use Photoshop myself..

Or The GIMP, a lot more affordable than the rest (as it is free).

I too use Photoshop, but it is out of the price range of most unless you want to build a career around it. If you're a student then you can get it at academic prices, but still may be out of your range.

Ooh, a laserdisc. The Cheat's playin' something on a laserdisc.

Hey, is Gimp any good? I've heard of it many times, but never actually used it, 'cause I only use Photoshop.. I tried a trial version of Paint Shop Pro 8.0, yet it wasn't as good as Photoshop 7.0..

But many use Paint Shop Pro..

In addition to this, I might make a template for cover making in psd format if anybody was interested?

I'll bet you professionals use Illustrator. Using Photoshop for that much text and other vector based stuff? I doubt it. Photoshop's good for amateur stuff, I suppose, but nothing beats a good vector graphics package.

There is Inkscape, a free vector graphics program. Runs on *nix, Windows, and Mac.

How do you get these programs? I know what Photoshop is, but I don't know how/where to get it. Could someone also tell me price range for these programs? Thanks.

For all the text and layout they'd most likely be using InDesign or Quark like the rest of the print professionals. Basically, what Karyudo and I are saying is that you don't only work in one program, but several. Artwork in Photoshop, logos and icons in Illustrator and layout placement, text and readying for press in InDesign. Oh, and departmental proofing in Acrobat.

If you really are keen on all this, then luckily the Academic price of all these programs is about the same as two separate. The whole Adobe Creative Suite 2 Premium is US$380 academic or $1,299 commercial. Photoshop by itself is $280 academic or $599 commercial. You can get a stripped down version called Photoshop Elements for $140 (this includes a video editor too).

As I mentioned earlier, The GIMP is totally free. It does all the general stuff fine, just missing some advance features that you'd likely never use for DVD covers. There's a couple of free Illustrator alternatives too, calamari mentioned Inkscape and I remember another, but can't remember the name (Google showed me no love either, wouldn't be surprised if it was Inkscape's previous name). There really is no reason to pirate software, well, unless you want to look like a jerk, then it works well.

Darth, real professionals often prefer Photoshop, but that doesn't mean it'll be best for you... paint shop pro is preferred by many "lesser" designers, and there are other alternatives out there as well. I suggest you get the trial versions and find which one suits you before shilling out any dough. You can also get the freeware alternatives (as already mentioned) - and if those suit you then you don't need to spend any money... but they may not suit you.

Here is my template for covers.. It doesn't have as many guidelines as Rikter.. Well thats because I was confused with the amount of guidelines it had.. My version comes with a few logos as well..
