Info Wanted: Another audio mix thread

Ehm, sorry for beginning another audio mix thread, but I am currently working on a big SW project and I need a few answers…

I am currently working on Episode V and Episode VI, so the first logical questions is : What sound mixes are on the 2006 “bonus” discs ? I’ve read they’re the 1993 remixes. Is it the truth ?
In 1985 the now very well known remix was done for Episode IV. But what about Episodes V and VI ? I could not find any info about their remixes. Any ideas if they actually exist ? And if they do, were they captured on some bootleg ?

I am asking these weird questions, because my Episode IV (which I plan to finish today) has all 3 theatrical mixes, plus the 1985 remix, plus the 1993 remix and I would like to do something similar with the rest.

Also a slightly different question - the TV premiere of Episode IV in 1984 had a unique intro and outro, both by Mark Hamill. What sound mix was used during this airing ? Or is THIS the TV version which included a mono version of the theatrical stereo mix ?

The 2006 bonus disc used the 1993 remix. It was derived from the DE/Faces masters.

There were remixes, for both of these, in 1993, and I think earlier as well. I don't really know exactly when, though. The initial releases of the laserdiscs have the theatrical sound mixes. The problem will be that ESB had two different sound mixes, the 35mm and the 70mm, with some dialouge changes. It isn't really available anywere. However, the 2004 DVD mix used the 70mm as the basis for their sound mix, and a reconstruction of the audio mix is theoretically possible assuming that it has all the changes, I believe, but would be pretty hard.

Good luck with your version of Star Wars. I would love to have a copy when you get finished if its possible. I've always thought that there should be a version that had multiple sound mixes in it. I don't believe that the 70mm mix is available either, outside a cassette recording of the mix that someone posted here a while ago. But there isn't any real audio differences between the 35mm and 70mm anyway, besides the additional LFE channels for the 70mm.

As for the 1984 airing, I know it wasn't the mono mix. The mono mix was aired in the UK at least once, but never in the States.

It has been about 8 months since our paths last crossed when you told me of this project.

As Number20 has already said, it will be good to finally get all the mixes on a single disc.

4 - 5 - 3 - 1 - 6 - 2

I would love to find just the mixes from the 70mms...

I've actually already completed this exact project using GOUT video with the audio from various different sources.

For ANH I've got the 1993 mix from the official release, theatrical stereo mix posted by Belbucus converted to ac3, the 1985 mix taken from the edit droid dvd, the theatrical mono mix, which I synchronized using Moth3r's originally posted version from a few years ago, along with the isolated score from the edit droid set, and the 1993 commentary track, which I created from the original TR47 audio and the Rowman Extras Disc.

For Empire and Jedi I used the 1993 mixes from the GOUT, the theatrical mixes taken from the Dark Jedi First Issue releases, the isolated scores from the edit droid discs, and similar 1993 commentary tracks.

Additionally, I included the revised "Episode IV" crawl as another angle on the anh disc and created custom subtitle tracks for each differing sound mix, as well as a sub track listing the names of the folks talking on the commentary tracks. I also created new options menus for all three discs and included the original trailers as extras. All chapter points from the GOUT are preserved.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

I agree, these sound awsome! Plus, I would like to have the theatricle edition of TPM. I have the VHS, but it has a bad place in it, and it is fullscreen.

AOL on that.

As n00b as I seem I like to think my heart's in the right place, even though my own abilities are rather limited. I'm not always the first or the best but sometimes I manage to just get the job done in a way that's easier to handle...like my old DVD-R that I made from Moth3r's mono rip and the EditDroid v1 ANH...or my lighter-weight videos that I encoded for viewing on a computer... (that's how I've usually seen Star Wars as of late anyway).

I'd just like to have the whole trilogy as originally shown, in all its variants - mightn't mind having the 1985 FSes for kicks too as that's what I grew up with. (Born 1980)

Hello friends, thanks for your help.

I plan to do a 10 DL disc set, 6 discs of theatrical movies + 4 bonus discs (classic docus, deleted scenes ...), discs 1-4 are ready, movies 1&2 have also a selectable extended version, disc 4 has a selectable "TV version" with Mark Hammil's intro and outro. All discs have Van Ling-style menus.
Off to Episode V ...

People, please read our FAQ - especially points 3 and 8b.

Taking the GOUT DVD and adding alternative sound mixes (or converting to anamorphic, adding custom menus, whatever) does not count as a fan edit, nor as a preservation effort. The separate audio files are available to download, the GOUT DVDs are official releases and are/were available to buy.

Although we have no problems with you making posts about your own "custom" DVDs that you've made, please refrain from discussing distribution of such discs on the forum. Thanks.

Which gave me the idea of making a script to take care of things.

I think I could in fact pull this off: download a package with a control file for dvdauthor + the ac3 files + a shell script that will demux the m2v directly off the GOUT R1 with mplayer, then remux with mplex from mjpegtools (I think that's where mplex is at least), then run dvdauthor on it to produce the VIDEO_TS folder.

This could be a potential solution and would also save me having to actually upload a dvdiso!

I wonder why I didn't think of it before. Until X0 comes along and blows away the GOUT, I could use this mechanism. Problem is it locks out people using Windows...though perhaps they could follow along with the script and do it themselves.

Sample script - showing how it could be done.

Molly,

Releasing a script sounds like a step in the right direction. However, I really hope someone makes something like the conversion package marioxb made for Backstroke of the West.

Do you think it would be a totally manual process for windows?

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Nah. All the tools I used do exist for Windows (mainly through Cygwin), so the script could possibly be rewritten without a lot of trouble to work there, it would just need a lot more stuff.

waitasec, there's actually a detached sub file out now for Backstroke of the West? o.o

Oooops, sorry, I thought it's forbidden to distribute this stuff for money, but it's OK to talk about it. But it's OK, as I said thanks for your help.

I have the Austrian PAL version and the audio suffers terribly from the thing known as "PAL speedup" - everything is faster and has a terribly high pitch.
Funny that my 2004 DVDs from Slovakia don't have this problem

The English language audio on the 2006 Empire disc comes from the 1993 DC mix.

However, the Spanish and French tracks are foreign dubs of the original 70mm mix.

Oh, god, that's new for me. Unfortunatelly the austrian release doesn't have those dubs, only english & german
