It had much more mature stories and was, from my understanding, relatively untouched in the wording department compared to the original
(besides translating it).
Too bad they cancelled the publication around May of last year, just as I was getting into it.

It's not that pricey to flip it over, and most mangas used to be publiched that way, even computer colorized (like Akira). But then the whole manga and anime thing stop being an "underground" cult and became mainstream - which is good AND bad at the same time - and manga are now published on it's correct form.
It has been a while since I've read non-japanese comics, so when I get one, I tend to read from right to left, and then I realize it's not manga

It's like hour upon our of mind numbing Kagome/DogBoy romance followed by action that fails to enthuse. Ugh.

Now, I have every single Rurouni Kenshin manga, and THAT is a good manga (way better than the anime, not sure about the OVAs). I even have the Kenshin Kaden, which is a book regarding the story, trivia, intreviews, art and stuff. Anyone here's a rurouni kenshin fan? "Ama-kakeru-ryuu-no-hirameki!"

Kenshin rocks. Swords, and ass kicking, and Swords...and Kenshin is just the man.
I really need to read the manga now if its 'way better then the anime' as I loved the anime. I have the whole series and the OVA's on dvd.

The idyllic rural Japan setting is a strange conquest to the gore, especially when Ashitaka maims and decapitates the Samurai with his arrows.
Also, what is with that talking boar that the worms ate at the begginning? That was... also odd.

It's not a bad movie, and yet at the same time it makes me angry. As in Nausicaa, non of the warring factions are really "villains", and the only true "Bad Guy" is some sort of alien or demon that calls itself the "Deer God" which is either Miyazaki's idea of a bad pun, or something that just doesn't translate into English and retain it's straight-faced-ness.
Now why it made me angry? Well. The "Deer God" loses its head. Literally. And then it's body goes on a rampage, killing everything in sight... And rather than destroying it, (which probably would have taken weapons more sophisticated than what's available to the characters of the era in which the film is set) they appease the monster by giving it's head back...
Seriously, I was hoping for some sort of climactic battle between Ashitaka and the Deer God-cum-Sludge Monster... but no such luck there. Not only do they give the murderous monster what it wants, but then everything's OK, and the land is restored and the grass grows again. The "Deer God" dies, but in an odd selfish suicide rather than paying for its destruction and all.
Anyway, it was odd, but it had a good plot until the end. It finally made sense, at least. It's also urprisingly violent. Had it not been animated, it would have been rated R. Seeing the pyschotic Boars get blown to bits was nice
All in all, I reccomend it if for nothing more than it's weirdness. 8/10.

I know my local blockbusters and possibly hollywood video (i dont have a membership their but i hear they have a bigger selection) carries at least Ghost in the Shell. Also, you might consider a netflix subscription...i dont have one but i hear they have a decent anime selection (though this still costs money)
