An article of lies and disgust - George Lucas talks re the 2004 OT SE DVD release... — Page 4

You are right. I think that Episode III will probably be the same thing. I'm not going to go pay to see it. I may be the only one, but at one time, I wouldn't miss a Star Wars movie in the theater. I didn't care for Episode I, but I figured I would give the prequels a chance since it was only the beginning. Well, I hated Episode II even more. I didn't even buy the DVD. Speaking of TPM, I'm happy because one of my fiancee's students said they would buy the DVD from me for $10 since that is the only one they don't have on DVD. BTW. I didn't say I won't see Episode III, I just won't pay money to see it at the theater. Either my nephew will rent the DVD or I'll watch it when it hits HBO.

Back on the Original Trilogy. Why did he have to cause all of the dissention among the fans anyway? All he had to do was put both versions on the DVD's and include the '97 scenes that were updated in 2004 as extras and be done with it. I'll admit that I probably wouldn't be so hard on the prequels if he wasn't so hard on the Original Versions. Since he is, I saw that as a threat to the films I loved. If he would have released both versions, I probably would have tolerated the prequels and the changes, but they would still pale in comparison to the Original Versions.

What about the lame extras? I'm not going to knock the documentary because I haven't seen it. The lame extras are the Vader doc. and the videogame. Who the hell needs to see the Vader doc. in order to be fired up for Episode III? Those who are going to see it didn't need it to make their decision. They decided long ago. They really could have put some great stuff on their like the deleted scenes. Hell, I would rather have a documentary focusing on all of the toys that came out for it over the years than one for a videogame.

He won't show it, but I believe the problems with this release are going to take some of the wind out of Lucas' sails.

I totally agree with what everyone has said about Yoda in the OT. While he's not my favorite character, I think he certainly has more depth in the OT than in the PT. I'm sorry but that scene between him and Dooku is just ridiculous. Yoda was fine in TPM, but in AOTC that duel looks stupid and the CGI is awful. Yoda looks so fake in that scene.

The Yoda fight scene was too over the top. Most really wanted to see it (me included). But it was just too much. It was a goofy cartoon. When his saber flew to his hand, i nearly peed myself. Now THAT was cool. everything after that.. eh.. oh well.

And the dialog was horrible. George needs writers. Maybe an infinite number of monkeys. Or Ewoks or something. I realize he had to set up the scene with some dialog, but come on! Actually, did he have to? Why not just have a kick ass fight scene? It's not like we're brilliantly stupid, we'll catch on. "Oh look, honey, Yoda is going to fight Dooku! Let's watch!"

The Star Wars DVDs and Episode III will be sales bonanzas, no doubt. But they are not going to be record setting in terms of overall DVD sales and beat all the other record holders nor will ROTS be a top-five movie. They just don't have the overall appeal that a Shrek 2 or a Titanic or a Spider-Man has. Just won't happen. TPM became a bonanza because people saw it as the first SW movie in 16 years. Then, they all felt burned by it. That's just how it is. That's why AOTC sold $120 million less in tickets. Many people gave up after TPM. They just didn't care anymore. Sith will be the same way, I fear. Many people just won't want to see it. The DVDs will do well. But for LFL to say that they will be the best selling DVD set of all time is going a bit overboard (I think they made that projection, didn't they?). The big green ogre is gonna slap them come Christmas.

I think it will do better than AOTC because it's "the last Star Wars movie ever!" And then the DVD of ep3, then the Ultimate Editions, the box set of 1 - 6, then the Original Trilogy after all is said and done (right?... please?)...

But Jedi didn't do better than ESB, did it? hm...

Jedi did do better than Empire, actually. Empire is the lowest grossing of the lot. Including the prequels. But inflation does have a lot to do with that.

Actually ESB did do better than Jedi at the box office. If you count for inflation...there was a big ticket price jump between 1980 and 83 at the theater.

how about *number* of tickets sold? jedi? if so, that was probably because it was the "last star wars movie to be made for a really long time." which is why i think that episode 3 will do better than episode 2. but will it *be* better? we'll argue about that until it comes out. then we'll argue about which was better for the next fifty years.

and then our kids and our grand kids will live through the special editions of the PT. they will have sites called originalprequeltrilogy.com, etc. lucas has certainly cloned himself by now. he's going to outlive everyone. roaches, george lucas and wal-marts, that's our future.

ESB grossed 290 Mil
Rotj grossed 309 Mil

Adjusted for inflation

ESB 555 mil
ROTJ 533 Mil

Im not that smart but I think the ticket sales were pretty close to each other.....

It's like this is the movie I wanted it to be, and I'm sorry you saw half a completed film and fell in love with it.

I wonder why he did not tell us they were half completed between 1977 and 1995....the reason. They weren't until he decided to make these prequels...man this guy just makes up shit as he goes along...I remember back in 78 when he said that there were 9 chapters to his story and the only two characters that were in all 9 were the two driods and it was being told from their eyes...now he says he never said there were nine chapters..

hmm....wonder why Greedo did not shoot first in 77'....guess he did not have the technology...

Or, at least, half of him.

"guess he did not have the technology..."

To make it look as shitty as it does....
