And I'm from Alabama, which has had 3 people that made it to the top two, and two of which actually won.

There is no lingerie in space…
C3PX said: Gaffer is like that hot girl in high school that you think you have a chance with even though she is way out of your league because she is sweet and not a stuck up bitch who pretends you don’t exist… then one day you spot her making out with some skinny twerp, only on second glance you realize it is the goth girl who always sits in the back of class; at that moment it dawns on you why she is never seen hanging off the arm of any of the jocks… and you realize, damn, she really is unobtainable after all. Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I hate the show for a fundamental reason. I think it hurts music cuz it's only out to make money. There are bands and singers out there who are paying their dues working shit jobs, playing crappy clubs and busting their asses to be heard and they've got more talent than anything that wins AI. They're the ones that deserve to be heard, not stupid pop tarts like Kelly Clarkson. She didn't pay any dues. She basically won a beauty contest where you sing and now she's on the fast track. There are musicians out there who should be heard, but won't cuz they don't fit in with what AI is looking for. The whole show is just wrong...in the same way MTV was wrong.
Rob Thomas from Matchbox 20 said something about AI back when it started that really stuck with me....he said something to the effect that the whole concept was wrong. You go on there and they pick you apart and tell you what you should be doing and what you should wear and how you sing. You're not being you then if you do what other people tell you to do. What gets you somewhere in music is your own individuality.
I'm paraphrasing from memory, of course....but Rob hit it right on the head. Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd never did what others told them to do. They did it their way and their legends for it. All that comes out of AI is disposable pop that makes a few people rich and that music will be hardly remembered at all in 20 years.
My respect for Jewel went down a notch or two though. She's someone who paid her dues and actually has talent and writes good songs with some meaning. What the fuck is she doing on that fucking Star Search ripoff???
Sorry to go off like this people....music is something I take very seriously. I don't mind pop fluff, but when it comes at the price of good and deserving artists, then I have to say stop. If I ever met Simon Cowell, I'd punch his fucking lights out. I'd do it just giving us the Spice Girls....

The way I look at it is that no one is "real" if they know they are on camera.

And it does all seem so artificial. I'd always thought singers came out of it on their own, that the cream would eventually rise to the top and reveal themselves. But, I read stories of famous people all the time where they are or were told by big execs to change their look, etc. to make them appeal to an audience, so those who made it without AI are still as artifically molded as they are on that show.

I actually do like Taylor Hicks, though, mostly because he did pay his dues, work shit jobs, and bust his ass. He's been playing in clubs with his local band for years, and this was sort of his big break. Plus he's actually talented.
His American Idol-approved solo album hit the shelves recently, and all the reviews said that the songs he wrote were quite good, because they had a real bluesy feel to them, but the ones the American Idol people had him sing were terrible, because they were trying to make him out to be something he wasn't.
Figures.

thats an interesting point--I don't love the show either, but I stick around for the first few episodes to see the auditions, like last night---
Yeah, most of the show is dumb and worthless, but the audition episodes are fun to watch. Some of those people...wow...I almost vomited....but in a good way, where the horribleness of it is funny. The rest of the show sucks and its sad America watches it more than any other show. Seriously, America can't be THAT stupid.

Seriously, America can't be THAT stupid.
Millions of viewers prove otherwise.
TV reminds me more and more of the foolish tripe described to come on the telescreens in Fahrenheit 451.
