Kenneth Branagh as (young) Obi-Wan

All the joking aside, this would have been genuinely an amazing casting choice that could have been.

I wasn't joking. All my choices -- Alanis included -- are serious choices.

I know, they were well thought choices. I meant my joking aside.

IMO Ewan was perfect as Ben in ROTS but he was too young in TPM. KB would have had the age and authority from day one. I've heard it said on a couple of film commentaries that RSC trained British actors are perfectly suited to green screen acting since they are trained to act against nothing but their imaginations on an empty stage.

DiCaprio looks like a genius for turning down shit like episodes II and III.

DiCaprio knows how to chose a script - and those scripts were not worth choosing.

However, in a world where the PT and Anakin's character are written well, I suggest Leo would be a perfect choice.

Bruce Boxleitner as an older General Kenobi during the Clone Wars...

^ I'd be geeking out so much I'd probably have an aneurysm ;-)

Plus anybody else remember walking out of the cinema after TPM thinking "George, why in heaven didn't you cast Haley Joel Osment as Anakin!?!"

^ He was the right age and could actually act. He auditioned but didn't even get a callback.

It would be interesting to see a list of who auditioned for all the roles in the PT, to see if there were other better options. A lot of the discarded OT actors are known but they only confirm how great the OT cast was.

^ This is what he looked like at almost exactly the time TPM was being shot and at the time AOTC was being shot...

...he looks even more like a young Guinness. Bet he could do the voice too.

Branagh is also a capable movie director. (He even did the first Thor.) I wouldn't be very surprised if he gets offered one of the other sequels or spinoffs.

Where were you in '77?

Truth be told, I didn't like Thor very much.

I guess that's due to the writing more than the directing, though.

Problem was that although Branagh could direct actors and comedy like nobody else (Those parts of Thor were on fire) the action set pieces and the whole look of the film were off. Which was probably down to his inexperience in that type of film. For example all the costumes looked like plastic which a fantasy Director would have spotted. Note that all the Asgard costumes were resigned for Avengers by a Director who knew his stuff and all looked real. But overall it was a win because despite some flaws I left Thor with a big grin on my face.

My main problems with the movie revolve around the title character himself. The development of his characterization throughout the movie felt rushed and unnatural, and I didn't like how the Donald Blake aspect of his character was removed.

Of course, I wasn't fond of Natalie Portman's character, the whole "Asgardians as aliens from another planet" thing, or the emo characterization of Loki, either.

I admit I'm not a big fan of Thor, and I haven't read many of the comics, but I can still recognize what a Thor movie should be like, and this isn't it.

I don't know about a full cast, but I think everything could use some Lee Van Cleef.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Boba Fett? I could hear Lee saying...

"This Sand-Skiff'll stop at Tucumcari"

or better yet, Jabba is gloating about finally getting even with Han and Boba leans over and whispers...

"Even a filthy scoundrel like that has a protecting angel... a golden-haired angel watches over him"

I was 100% thinking of him as Boba Fett. The prequels lacked the western element that the OT had. Boba Fett was just like Lee Van Cleef in For A Few Dollars More.

Maybe have Charles Bronson from the same time as a Han Solo figure. He could play the sort of good sort of bad type.

Screw it, I'll make a list. Pretend it was made in about 1968. To go with the western flair.

John Wayne - Old Ben

Charles Bronson - Han Solo

Lee Van Cleef - The Bounty Hunter

Roy Rogers and Dale Evans - Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru

Lorne Greene - Darth Vader (His voice just merits it)

Yul Brynner - The Emperor

Paul Le Mat - Luke

Yeah, that is an excellent choice. I thought of him, but didn't have a good idea as to how to place him. I picked John Wayne, soley for his age, but Jason Robards acted older.

I’m gonna try for more realistic alternate casting this time around. Some of my choices remain unchanged, others are radically different.

ALTERNATE ROTJ

Virginia Hey as Palpatine.

Clive Revill as the voice of Palpatine.

ALTERNATE PREQUEL TRILOGY MADE IN 1989-1995

Kenneth Branagh as Obi-Wan.

Christian Bale as Anakin.

Kristy Swanson as Mother Skywalker (I still won’t refer to her as Padme).

Beatie Edney as Beru.
