I've been aware of the Galileo restoration for a while. It's almost miraculous it resurfaced when it was presumed lost or destroyed for many years.

There was quite a firestorm at Trekmovie from angry fans when it was put up for auction, wanting to give the then current owner the fire and pitchfork treatment for letting it decay further. When the facts of the owners health and financial problems were revealed, there was a lot of embarrassment to go around.

I hope I can see the old Galileo 7 when she's finally on display. I saw the big "E" when she was first displayed at the Smithsonian in the 70's, (well before the current botched restoration paint job) and this would complete the circle for me.

To go back to The Cage/The Menagerie for a minute, I love The Cage, and I love the idea and most of the execution of The Menagerie, but the frame story as a whole, or at least upon getting to part 2... sucks.

Everything before the courtroom malarkey starts is pure gold.  You have a mystery, intrigue, confusion.  It's a clip show that REALLY makes you WANT to see the clips rather than dread them.  Unfortunately, as soon as you get to the clips, the frame acts like, "Oh, well, here we are.  I guess my job is done," and then just wanders off and gets incoherently drunk only to stagger back on to the set and piss itself.

"How do you plead?"  "Guilty."  "Okay, then, that should be the end of it, but I'll let you show clips now."

*clips*

*return from clips*

"I'm really angry!  You're going to jail now!"

*commercial break*

"I forgot why I was angry!  Keep showing the clips!"

And it just goes on and on like that, with the frame only coming back to make it look like Spock is in really deep poop so the cliffhanger seems tense... only for them to come back and act like nothing ever happened.  And then it wraps itself up by the antagonist being in on the plan the whole time.  You know, the one who spent the entire episode trying to STOP the proceedings and thereby jeopardize his entire plan?

Eh.  I chalk up The Menagerie as Kirk falling asleep watching old Starfleet log tapes and hallucinating the whole thing.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

As Commodore Mendez was merely an illusion of the Talosians, (he never left the Starbase) the whole "fiction of a court martial" can be construed as hallucinatory.

Yeah, but couldn't the Talosians have conjured up a fiction of a court martial that actually made the slightest bit of sense?

Maybe they used Kirk's memories of his own court martial, which he found confusing? ;)

Clearly I am in a two days kinda place ;)

My enthusiasm for the film has dropped quite a bit in  recent months but I'm still cautiously optimistic.

Yeah, but there's a woman in her underwear!

(that's all I remember from the commercial I saw yesterday :p)

Last night I recorded a podcast with Dave Rossi as a guest. He was involved in most of the modern Trek, but we were talking Enterprise, which he was Associate Producer on. He also produced TOS Remastered, so before we recorded I talked to him a bit about it.

He gave a story I've read elsewhere, that CBS talked to him about having someone redo the effects, and he immediately said that was a terrible idea, look what Lucas did! A few days later they came back and asked if he still thought it was a terrible idea, and he said that he still did, but that if they were to do it, they need to find someone who wouldn't go too far and would keep things balanced. So CBS said, "You want to do it?"

He continued on with stuff I'd never heard before. CBS Digital was very aware of the controversy they might be causing, and they actually had shirts made of Edith Keeler holding a phaser that said "Edith Shot First". I'm going to see if I can get a picture of these shirts.

Thought you all might appreciate that tidbit more than most.

Well, to CBS' credit, there were mindful of the fans who wanted the original effects intact on the Blu Rays.

Funny how nobody seems to be complaining about that. Some fans were kind of cranky at all those decontamination chamber scenes on Enterprise a decade ago. ;)

That's what I was sure to thank him for. We're going to try to have him back so I can gush while we're recording.

I'll definitely have to check out that interview.

In other news, this is a thing now. Sounds really cool but the price is a real turn off.

Cool! Does he have any involvement in the current TNG HD remastering? I saw The Best of Both Worlds on the big screen a couple weeks back, and the efforts to use as much of the original model footage as possible is certainly paying off.

I don't think so.

GUYS HELP I CAN'T STOP READING THIS COMIC ABOUT IF DS9 WAS AN RPG THE TNG CAST PLAYED.

Now I am hooked too!

I love it. I have now decided in my own personal Star Trek cannon, DS9 is from now on merely an RPG game. It works so well! I love when near the beginning of the comic Geordi is explaining the game scenario (basically DS9's plot), and everybody keeps interrupting him and telling him how ridiculous and unrealistic is all is.

You can get through all of it (so far) in an hour.  I can't wait for more.

Hell, it makes me want to take the plunge and start DS9.  Fuck finals, Star Trek
