I’ve heard that many people cant get into TOS because it’s “Too corny.”
Hot take incoming…
It’s TGN, for me, that is so corny I can’t take it. It’s full of cheesy corn & soap opera antics. Over the last few years I’ve really come to love TOS. I used to think I hated Trek en mass, but once I finally gave it a real shot, TOS won me over very quickly.
I’ve occasionally dipped into TNG, thinking I must have missed something when it was actually on air. I love Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner & LeVar Burton. But, TNG is just not for me.
I haven’t tried the other shows.

Personally my two favorite shows are TOS and DS9. DS9 is a real breath of fresh air compared to TNG. TNG is very formal, everyone is rather stiff because they have to show proper respect to rank. On DS9 it’s much more casual and to me, a lot more fun.

Though that isn’t to say I don’t like TNG. I actually think you might like it if you give it a proper chance, just know the first two seasons are really bad. It’s not until the third season where TNG finally starts to find its footing.

Same for DS9, though that really only took a single season. Pretty much every Trek takes time to find itself. The only exception being TOS which was great after the pilot.

But yeah if you like TOS I’d recommend giving DS9 a shot, just know the first season is a bit rough.

I find this kind of funny, because my problem with TNG is that the cast (other than Picard) is too casual. In TOS, Kirk, Spock, and McCoy are best friends, but they’re also fellow officers, and they treat each other as such. The same goes for the lower ranks. TNG, it seems to me, did this a lot less.

THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.

The dated visuals of TOS are what initially dissuaded me from checking the show out. DS9 and the TOS films are what warmed me up to Star Trek and allowed me to eventually plunge into the '60s show without reservation. I consider it my second favourite Trek series after DS9.

TNG remains the worst of the live-action Trek series I’ve seen. Too preachy, too much technobabble, and three seasons too many*. Of course, I say that having never watched VOY, ENT, STD, etc.

*Cut Seasons 1, 2, & 7 and you lose little of value.

Man, I don’t know what people love about DS9 but I just can’t get into it. I’ve been trying to work my way through it for several years and I’m on season 5. I watch an episode and that’s enough DS9 for the next month. That’s not to say it’s bad - Inner Light brought me to tears - but episode to episode it feels like such a stifling drag.

TNG to me is the opposite. After Season 2 it breezes by. I think it’s a tone thing. DS9 tries to go for an edgier tone, more gray areas and darkness, but that feels antithetical to the optimism of Star Trek. TNG largely remains true to this optimism, to the point that even when it becomes overly comfortable with itself and eschews real world drama it is at least settling into that quietly radical philosophy.

I agree with everyone else about TOS though. It’s just fun. Watch it.

I tend to skip over the episodes which don’t focus on world-building/character development/the Dominion War. Seven seasons of 20-26 episodes each are too damn many, anyway.

Trek became so insufferably smug with TNG’s self-satisfied utopianism; it needed a spoonful of deconstructive humility to reduce the swelling in its head.

Fair enough, but it works for me. I guess none of the DS9 characters speak to me as much.

Another pet theory, which isn’t really mine since I stole it from others: Picard never left the Nexus. Every Trek series and movie released after Generations is set in a pocket universe where Picard is the Gary Stu action hero he always secretly wanted to be.

Best aspects of this theory? Kirk isn’t really dead and DS9 remains in-continuity.

The title of the article is misleading - in that this is an unreleased fan-project that will never likely see the light of day - but does illustrate what can be achieved…

There was a similar sort of experimental attempt for Deep Space Nine in HD - by a talented fan last year, here…

" The effects were shot on video rather than added to film after the fact, making it much harder to upgrade the quality than it was for The Next Generation. "

They don’t seem to know what they’re talking about. 😕

Does anyone else think there will ever be another Star Trek film? the JJ Series is obviously dead. I wish the 4th reboot movie would have happened. But Star Trek Beyond did not make the money they wanted.
I wanted to see the new Enterprise A on the new 5 year mission. Sad it will never happen.
I was interested in seeing the Hawley or Tarantino films and neither of those seem to be happening either.

If we do it’ll be years down the road. Investors aren’t biting anymore and I think it’ll need time away from the popular culture to distance itself from the last few attempts. The current series aren’t helping that matter.

I could have sworn I saw an article a few months ago that a fourth film was back on again?

It was that boneheaded idea to bring Kirk’s father back that derailed things in the first place.

So it looks like the Hawley film is canceled and Star Trek TMP 4K is on hold. Or at least i heard that was so on Burnett Network livestream.
When are they going to get their act together at Paramount.

They’ve been sitting on the 4K release of Wrath of Khan for years and there is no release on physical media.

Meanwhile CBS is determined to air Discovery season 3 by the end of the year, and to start production on Strange New Worlds and Picard Season 2.

Despite the merger, a single cohesive Star Trek continuity is not on the cards, nor does it look like Paramount’s film division and CBS streaming arm want there to be one.

How were they able to get around the CBS fanfilm guidelines. That state a film has to be a certain length and cannot use trademarked materials or things which are copyright to them.

I mean the film opens with the music from the Wrath of Khan, lol. And Nichelle Nichols narrates the opening. An actress who has worked on official Star Trek.

The finale of Lower Decks was legitimately a fun time. Hopefully season two can maintain that kind of quality.

Spoilers:

Seeing the Titan and Captain Riker was fantastic!

I like a lot of Star trek but i feel like the TNG films were a lost opportunity.
1 great action flick, 1 mediocre film and 2 awful films.
Even Star Trek V as bad as it is has its moments. The TNG films just never really worked, and i wonder why. Great cast, the potential is there and they had good writers and creatives. Yet nothing ever really gelled.
