Alienware Aurora Star Wars Edition

Question:

I've been thinking about getting a new PC. At first, I told myself "If I run across a game that I really want, but cannot play because its requirements are too high, then I'll buy a new PC."

Then I learned about the Alienware Star Wars Edition PCs. Now I'm tempted to get a new PC now.
But I cannot decide.

For about $550, I can get a custom machine from CyberPower Systems that is, in theory, equivilent to the power of the baseline Alienware.
(I say in theory because all the numbers...processor speed, Ram, video card type, etc would be roughly the same).

The Alienware starts at $1499, but the added perk is the sweet-looking case, hyperspace subscription, complete XP skinning, various soundtracks and the rest of the Star Wars package, whatever all of it is plus the Alienware brandname.

Is it worth $1000 extra? That's what I'm asking myself.

when i first looked at them i thought, perhaps. But after about 10 more seconds i was back at a definate no. I would be different if the case was a darth vader helmet, r2d2, or somehting to that effect, but its just some cool graphics and icon, not worth a cool grand in my mind...

I'm with Kingsama on this. All you get is a pretty case and some wallpaper. You can get something simial for free by getting the freeware version of window blinds. Sure, the popup at start up is a little annoying, but you can customize your interface pretty well.

If I were you I would go to the alienware site and get all the specs on the system you want (ie. motherboard, processor, ram) and just build the exact same piece of hardware for yourself. They will charge like 3,000 bux for a top of the line computer that you could build with your own two hands for around 900.

I know your thinking you don't have the skill to do it. Lots of people are scared of building computer by themselves but it's not hard at all. Search online for tutorials and do some research. Next thing you know you'll have a pimped out box of your own.

Can anyone provide a link to this computer being discussed here? I'm curious just to see what it's all about.

Well, that's certainly interesting.

On the contrary, the computer I have now has plenty of upgrades I installed myself. New processor, video card, 2nd hard drive, network card, memory.
No, I have no problem building a system like that.

The issue for me is if this is worth it.
Its not just a PC, its a work of art, both inside and outside, something I'd hold on to for years...even beyond its time for replacement.

I see what you’re saying.

I personally think it's an ugly case. Alienware just doesn't have the style they once had with cases. With all the cases on the market today I would say you were better off finding a cool looking one and hiring an artist to do a paint job for you.

That way you have a true work of art and not a mass produced marketing gimmick.

But again that's just me.

Yeah, I'd love to do some customizing with my laptop. When(if?) I build a new desktop, I might concider customizing it like that. So I'd do what Mackey suggests, build my own, and have an artist paint it. Then you'd have a one-of-a-kind.

sexy casing 4 sure - but on2 more immediate goals: any1 know if those are windowblind skins and if so where they can be downloaded from?
Author

Don't think they are Windows Blinds skins (special company was hired to make them), and they aren't available for download.

They are exclusive to the Alienware Star Wars edition PCs.

Not quite on topic, but a similarly-themed product line:

This one......or this one?

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.
