Alien 3 Extended Edition (Released)

Alright guys, I got a quick update on my edit.  I’ve gathered most my required materials.

Alien Quadrilogy Box Set

The normal Alien 3 DVD

Alien 3 Workprint DVD-R (thanks alot to RevBeastly for hooking me up)

The OSTs to all the films (original CDs too, so I can rip lossless tracks if I decide to rescore the film)

I’m starting to clean up and resize the workprint from fullscreen to the same res, AR, black bars, as the Quadrilogy.

A full list of changes is coming soon!!

What I do need though, Is a decent copy of this trailer

Alien 3 Trailer #2

http://www.movieweb.com/video/VIe85ifeaWPqhg

It contains the EEV crash scene, I don’t believe is in any cut of the film not even the workprint.  But it is in the trailer.  Is the trailer on any of the Quadrilogy discs, I didn’t see it, but maybe I missed it.

I’d definently be your best friend/lover/loyal companion for life if you found me a decent copy of this trailer.  I really want to edit that scene in.

There is no Director's Cut of Alien 3, Fincher will not revisit the piece as he had such a hard time making and living with the fallout of that film.

The Extended Cut is a re-assembly of most of the original material.

There have been a few fan edits (putting back the dog burster and queen chestburster).

Personally I would prefer to see a version with much of the story of the extended version but with most of the sillier dialogue cut and the film rescored if possible.

Some of the score is great but a lot of it blams in,  in a bad way.

I'd love to hear some of Jerry Goldsmith's unused music for the first film replace some of the soundtrack.

The Extended Cut proved there was a much more watchable film hiding in the vaults, a tighter edit and bit of reworking (maybe even some new effects to replace the awful CGI) could turn it into a really good film.

There was certainly oddles of atmosphere and some good performances.

Bingowings is correct.  When the Quadrilogy DVD set was being assemble Fincher flat out refused to do a Director's cut.  Even Ridley Scott did a Special Edition cut for the set but set the original version was the Director's cut and superior.

Fincher just never got over how they treated him while he was making the film.

As far as an uberedit goes, I did work on one for awhile.  What I discovered is that the differences between the 2 versions is just to great.  As soon as you start adding content from one into the other you create discontinuities in the plot.  Swapping the dog burster for the yak is about the only change you can safely make between them.  (And IIRC that causes a few problems as well.)

I don't believe there was anything in the workprint that was useful that didn't make it into the SE.

The Special Edition cut is probably the closest you'll get to a completely complete version.  I know it completely changed my opinion of the 3rd film (I almost didn't buy the set because I had no interest in ever watching Alien3 again).

Don't let me dissuade you if you have a plan though.  If you make it, I'm sure I won't be the only one who'll give it a watch.

Which reminds me, I really do have to work on my shelved Alien 4 edit.

That's pretty much the one we've been referring to.  For the most part he just swapped scenes as needed to incorporate the dog bursting.

(Also, I seem to recall some odd continuity problems with that edit.)

Hey all,

It's been a LONG while since I've posted here.  Glad to see I am still a member.

As I've been watching some of my favorite flicks again, Alien 3 Assembly Cut was always on my list of cool.  It unfortunately sacrificed the VERY cool ending of the theatrical release (which still sucks greatly) but I understood the need for the "sacrificial-like" pose Ripley takes in the shape of a cross as she plummets to her demise....sort of keeps the "spiritual" message in the movie intact.

Regarding the above trailer....I watched it and there is no EEV crash scene in it....maybe you have the wrong trailer linked.

Anyways, I am excited to see that people are doing these types of releases although the magnitude of them for any said movie gives me an innate headache...which one to watch first, etc.  I've never seen the "actual" Workprint in it's entirety...as much as I'd like to, I can't seem to find it available on the net.

I would LOVE to see a more complete version that could incorporate as much footage as possible without losing any of the feel that Fincher set out for when he brought his ideas to the table.

Hope everyone has a great day!!!!

Cheers!!!!!

I think he was refering to the Alternate Clemens segment at the beginning.  That shot wasn't featured in any cut of the film, not even the workprint.

It was intended at one stage that Clemens walks along and witnesses the EEV crash and the opening scene in the trailer is a shot of the original sequence.

Okay, that clarifies things a bit then, thanks.

The opening segment of the "assembly print" seems to have that shot (Quadrilogy Set)...unless they are different for some reason that I hadn't noticed.  I am so far from being technically minded about movie editing....but it did look the same.

Let me show you :)

Assembly Cut:

The Assebmly Cut version dosen't show him watching the EEV crash into the sea.  It's edited so it looks as if he see's the EEV in the water followed by Ripley being washed uo upon the shore.

Alternate Shot (trailer):

This is part of the original shot where Clemens hears the EEV enter the atmosphere and witnesses the EEV crash.

I see, good comparison.  That clears that up for me.  I'm glad I inquired...it always helps to learn more about these differences.

So, the alternate shot should be in somewhere before the end of the original shot, making it one complete sequence if I'm understanding it right?

Thank you xeno.

I would be very interested in this edit.

Same Make. Same Model. New Mission.

I would be interested as well.  I think this movie was very under-rated here in the U.S..  Mr. Fincher certainly didn't get a fair shake.  I'd love to see each Director do a full blown edit of their respective movie as an addition to the Quadrilogy set for the fans.  These are historical moments in a historical franchise that deserve to be preserved properly for all to enjoy.

Here's a youtube playlist of most of the workprint exclusive scenes:

Sadly all those scenes have been taken down. Are they available anywhere else or did anyone download them at all?

I would really like to check out the "workprint" edition.  Has anyone a clue on how one might start looking for it?

Thanks in advance.

I wasn't sure where the best place to ask this was so I plugged for here as the OP mentions it.

I've lost my old copy of the workprint and was trying to locate another copy.

A PM if you can help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

I’ve searched the web high and low for the workprint and only turned up a torrent thats been dead for years. If anyone in this thread has it to share I’d be eternally grateful.
