i give this movie 2 out of 5 stars.

There was a good movie hidden within this movie. I saw a preview screening today and i really disliked parts of this movie. Now I do not mean to be discrimitory in anyway in this post but the fact it that Alexander's bisexuality was way over played, it messed this movie up big time. The first hour and a half of this 3 hour marathon was very good, it flowed and the story made sense, but the second half was flooded with bisexuality scene which 1 slowed the story, and 2 badly messed up the flow. Of the last 90 min, 30 min were probably spent towards displaying this idea. the fact is that this movie from what i saw could have been spectacular if they had edited out some of the bisexuality sences. Some may riddicule me for my thought but all i have to say to them is the see the movie.

good things
the first battle was fantasic as was the second
the story was pretty faithful to history, and alexanders love for his people was protrayed very nicely.
the acting was good
the flow in the first half of the movie was great
the style was very nicely pulled off.

final thoughts this movie could have been great but the last half of the movie wreaked the entire movie.

Hollywood now has an "ancient" streak:
Gladiator
Troy
Alexander
...

what next? Julius Caesar? Hercules? Hannibal? (no, I don't mean H.Lecter )

Hopefully this spells the death of the sword and sandal epic for another 10 years. I knew that Oliver Stone couldn't make a historical epic of this scope. The buzz online and through the film community has not ben good, and it's really going to hurt Warner if this one tanks as badly as Troy did, though moreso Intermedia.

Yeah, I have no desire to see this film. If it wasn't Stone, maybe. The Baz Luhrman version would have been interesting to see, but it's been dropped.

Nile, did you hear that some Greek Historical Society is suing the production house about the whole bisexuality issue? They claim that there is no historical documentation saying that Alexander was really bi, so they want a disclaimer in the credits saying that this movie is a figment of Hollywood's imagination and that the historical truth behind it is limited. Just read the article about it yesterday.

Oh, and a film regarding Hannibal is in the scripting stages from what I've read. But that was like two years ago.

I must say that I've never heard about Alexander's bisexuality before, even though I've read a bit about certain... err... eccentric habits... of some leaders, from ancient times to modern history (in other words from ancient China to III Reich). Which proves nothing, because I'm not a history expert...

All of this reminded me of a classic joke from the "Radio Erewan" series:

- Dear Radio, is that true that Chaikovsky was gay?
- Generally, yes... but we love him also for his music.

What's Radio Erewan? And is it supposed to be spelled "Erehwon"?

I ask about the spelling because we used to have a small chain of outdoors stores here in upper Illinois that was called Erehwon which is the word Nowhere backwards.

Although I am familiar with the historical significance of Alexander the Great, my interest in Alexander is primarily more on the music. I am a Vangelis fanatic.

Homosexuality was pretty wide spread in many areas of the civilized ancient world, it would not surprise me to find out that Alexander, um dabbled in it in to some degree.

Wouldn't surprise me either. What I'm wondering about right now is the historical accuracy of this depiction. I'd swear I heard somewhere before the movie was even in preproduction that Alexander was bi. I just can't remember where I read or heard it.

pretty much all men in power at that period in history were not bisexual or homosexual, but they just liked to "play" with young boys. of course some of them were homosexual, like Alexander; cant remember where ive read it, but im quite sure...

Erewan is Polish spelling for Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. This small country used to be a part of USSR, it borders now with Turkey and Georgia (not the state in USA, but former state of USSR).

"Radio Erewan" is a series of classic Russian jokes (but some could be made up in other countries, like in Poland), which were a reaction to the boring/sad/pitful life in communism. In a witty, ironic way they served the best political humor, even though political jokes could end your life in a forced labor camp somewhere in Siberia. Most of the jokes are beginning with "Generally yes/no, but....".
I will post some of them in the jokes thread.

I have returned for a day.

i swa a preview sreening of alexander yesterday as well. it was free i should add too, which was good cus i wouldn't spend $10 on this movie. overall it was a bad movie. th fact is that as nile was saying this movie had a good solid movie within it. Oliver stone did a good job on the first 90s. however he butcher the second half. as nile was he overplayed his bi hand. yes the truth is that there was alot of bisexuality in those times it is quite will known, the romans were the same way. in this movie Stone really tried to punch that in, and he achieved this but at the cost of distroying his movie. What he did in the second half was reiterate the idea that alexander was bi by showing lots of bi seens. these scenes in many ways reminded me if the love story in AOTCs they were poorly acted and poorly played. it was these to attributes that distroyed the flow of the second half of the movie. these scenes also deglorified alexander in the eyes of audience and made the movie drang. no i am not suggesting that stone remove all of them, because that would one wreak the movie more and 2 just be historically inaccurate. what he should do it look at the movie again and find ther scenes that wreaked the flow. FOR EXAMPLE Stone seems to love this weird skiny shemale guy, and all throughout the movie he would extend shots at there end to zoom in on this guy or in some way make it appearent that this guy was there. it was extensions like these that Stone should have look at removing.

there i have said my peace fairwell all.

Shimmy! Good to see ya! As to the whole, bi-, homo- whatever Alexander was... on the iMDB, there was a story to the effect that either the Greek government or a group of Greek historians was looking to get Alexander (the movie) banned from Greece because there is no historical evidence that Alexander was gay. They were also looking to sue Warner Bros. for the inaccurate portrayal.

Ollie's got himself in a whole Messerschmitt this time! (sorry, couldn't resist)

I thought the movie was plain awful. I would give it half a star out of five. The trailer said that Alexander had conquered the known world be the age of 25. My questions for the movie were: 1. Who is this man that could do that? 2. How did he do it? The movie answers neither question.
Instead, we get many scenes of Alexander toasting to places he has conquered while not seeing him conquer them and many, many scenes of his troops rebelling against him. I learned virtually nothing of Alexander the man.
The first battle scene is a complete mess. It may be the worst directed battle scene I have ever seen. The second battle scene at least had some elephants to make it a little interesting. They should have dropped Anthony Hopkins' narration all together.
If Stone wanted to portray Alexander as homosexual or bisexual, that would be Stone's choice. However, Alexander seems to be bizarrly asexual. He didn't seem to be into Hephaistus even though Hephaistus was clearly into him. They may have had sex in the scenes after arriving at Babylon, but the movie didn't show whether Alexander wanted to or whether he just need a loyal friend. He only seemed to be interested in his wife to have an heir. At least we got to see Rosario Dawson's breasts. That was the best thing about the movie.

i disargee one of those questions was answered and the other partially answered.

we did find out who alexander was?
the problem with this movie was that is focused too much on who alexander was. the movie did it so much and so well to the point were we no longer cared for alexander cus he wasnt so mysterious, and cool. and so the movie lost our interest and thus all of the reports that it was horrible.

how did he conquer all the world. he did this with his mind. alexander was able to take over the world one because he was smart in battle, we saw this in the first battle. we also saw it in the second battle where he used his mens love for him to give them spirit. the other method that he used which is critical was how he incoperated the conquered lands into his world, he made them feel important. if you look at history every large empire used this method inorder to grow. and once they stopped using it they fell. alexanders empire feel because he died and his genrals didnt feel the same way about the lands as he did. rome fell when they stop respecting there ppl and the ppl outside of there empire. the only historical expection of this was the colonial empires. however this was becausea a small army could kill a big army if it was better equiped. and so rebellions could be quelled quickly and efficiently. in the end it did matter thou because the colonies still got there independance.

so in a way if you look closely at it both of your questions were answered.

However, Shimmy, it doesn't change the fact that (and you already agreed with me on this) that THE MOVIE SUCKED LIKE STINKY WIZZLETEATS ON EGGS!

Ren & Stimpy. It's a reference to a line in the Happy Happy Joy Joy song (as sung by Stinky Wizzleteats):

"I'll teach ya to be happy; I'll teach your grandmother to suck eggs!"

I'll admit it was perfect or even original; @ least it was different.
