"Alert my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival." What was the point? — Page 3

plus the pacing got changed and the music broken up

In my mind this was far and away the worst change in the SE's. FOr the most part I don't really go to crazy about the changes (for one, Mos Eisley WAS supposed to be a very crowded and bustling space port, etc.) The baby talk lines by the new band in ROTJ were pretty ridiculous too though.

But us back our "Bring my shuttle!" line at the least. Even if he insists on keeping the pace ruining rest of it there is no reason to not go back to million billion trillion times better original line. The new line has none of the proper emotion, it sounds weird not quite like Vader, it's too wordy and not something Vader would say at that moment and again Bring My Shuttle had some of the most ferocious intensity of any line Vader ever delivered!

And I'm sorry but it still makes 100% perfect sense even in the new version, what are people talking about when they say it doesn't work? What is he going to suddenly stop dead in teh hall after saying that and they will squeeze a giant shuttle into the hallway for him to get onto? No, he just means bring my shuttle to the docking bay that I am walking to a t the moment.

I've never understood why the fanboys (and I guess I am one, or I wouldn't be here) get so worked up over Greedo shooting (kind of) first but don't seem that bothered about this scene which, for me, is the worst travesty of the SE editions.  I don't believe Burtt who says it's leftover dialogue from A New Hope - in fact, since Revenge Of The Sith I have very little respect for that fella and I'm glad he's no longer part of the Star Wars team.

I hope and pray that common sense will prevail at some point and the line "Bring my shuttle" will be re-inserted and all the additional scenes of the shuttle flying to The Executor will be removed - we don't need them; we're not stupid - we can make the intellectual leap that Vader goes to his ship without being shown.

Succinctly put, avoidz!

The main point of the line being changed is that George wanted to show off Cloud City more, and he already had Vader's shuttle parked on the platform so Vader could not go asking for his shuttle if it was already there. I like the quick added shots of the city. I made a mock up of the shot that would keep the original shuttle line, and I just removed the Shuttle off of the platform. That way you could get the extra quick scenic shot without changing any lines.

That wouldn't need the line changed though, just the shuttle footage would suffice actually.

For the same reason there is a shot of a lightsaber rolling around in the prequels every time someone drops theirs. Lucas forgot that an audience can read between the lines and decided leading us along was more important than the pacing of the movie.

The last act of Empire is nearly operatic in its intensity and is absolutely BEAUTIFULLY scored and PACED! It's not even the change in Vader's voice, or the pointless shot of Vader arriving, it's the total and utter DESTRUCTION of the musical flow in that scene! It's just completely and utterly ruined! For the sake of about 5 seconds of needless exposition.

It's the single most offensive change to the entire original trilogy in my humble opinion, and shows that either Lucas, or Ben Burtt (Perhaps both) haven't a CLUE about the importance of musical pacing in a scene. It's almost like they see music as a generic sound effect - you can cut and paste it all you like as long as the general feel of each piece is roughly the same. This kind of attitude towards the importance of John Williams' masterpiece(s) really is quite offensive. I would love to know his feelings when he saw this edit.  This scene was scored in a way few films regrettably are these days (or even then) - it was a perfect marriage of editing, FX work, and of course musical scoring. It was at this point I realised Lucas had lost control of whatever it was he had in the first place, and he was just using the original films to play about with CGI in anticipation of the prequals.

I actually didn't mind many of the changes to Empire, but this one change rendered the Special Edition unwatchable for me. It bugs me just thinking about it. Even though the GOUT is such low quality, it's still the one I goto now for any of the films.

I'd rather watch a faded masterpiece than a cleaned-up patchwork mess of a classic film.

In the theatrical cut of Empire Strikes Back when Lando comes out the top Hatch of the falcon and Luke Drops from the weather vane around 5 seconds of music / 2 bars are cut out. So what you are describing as treating the music as a generic sound effect has been in their minds from the first release of the film.

There was actually meant to be a few more shots.

Lando pulling Luke across the falcons chasis back to the Hatch

And I think (Best Guess) a cockpit Shot of Leia and Chewie and a blast from the Tie Fighters (within Cockpit).

That if anything should have been the special edition version not what they did which was a new idea. And had nothing to do with what was left on the cutting room floor. or it should have just stuck with the theatrical cut if this alternative was cut for very good reasons. Or they could have atleast showed us the scene in workprint.

I think it went

Lando scramble across on top of falcon dragging Luke.

Leia Internal cockpit "Hurry, we've got company" (Heard in the original Thetrical 70mm the one without the falcon dish)

BANG!

Tie fighters soaring under cloud city

Leia "Lando"

Lando "ok, Let's go"

Another possible configuration is Luke drops from the weather Vane Then Lando Looks around out of the top Hatch Cut to Leia "Hurry, we Have company" Lando pulling Luke across the top of the falcon then resume Tie fighters soaring uder cloud city and so fourth.

I vividly remember the sense of dread the original sequence gave me when I first saw it.

The rebel's escape is not assured as fighters pursue the Falcon. Vader has been thwarted on Bespin so what is HIS next move? The order to bring his shuttle does not fully reveal his intentions but they do have intent mixed with frustration and annoyance. He has something up his sleeve.

The sight of the Executor blocking the Falcon's flight from the Cloud City heralds the might of the Empire finally bearing down on our heroes like a cruel wedge of inevitabity. Vader's sudden appearance on the bridge of the Star Destroyer really compounds the sense of hopelessness and shows Vader personifying the seeming omnipresence of the enemy. There is no escape.

Did you notice that I didn't feel the need to point out "This was the moment I realised what Bring my shuttle meant and where that shuttle was going to take Vader and whether or not the Star Destroyer was actually prepared for him arriving."?

The reason for this is that is so utterly self evident in the scene of Vader's arrival on the bridge that The Empire have been prepared for this turn of events since before the rebels even arrived in Cloud City. Vader's plan to personally acquire Skywalker through persuasion has failed. He is now falling back on the less satisfying plan B of capturing the sabotaged rebel vessel. The frustration in Vader's curt command shows his displeasure at resorting to a crude entrapment using the largest Imperial vessel at his disposal.

It's telling that he seems unmoved, thoughtful even, when the Falcon vanishes into hyperspace. He's failed already. Perhaps he's pondering the ability of a tiny band of rebels to defy the Empire.

I me, the new scene works and doesn't work. What Lucas should of done for the SE is have Vader say the superior "Bring my shuttle" and then have the shot of the landing platform, but have the shuttle beginning to land.

I think how Adigitalman handled that scene is the best compromise ("Bring my shuttle" + no landing pad scene + shuttle goes to SSD + no shuttle landing scene)

I'm surprised he didn't show where Anakin's severed limbs landed.  And I know it wouldn't garnish an PG-13 rating for Episode 2 or an R rating for Episode 3 because we still see Ponda Baba's bloody arm in the PG rated "A New Hope," and that was one of the few scenes that was left untinkered in every official release.

You could get away with a lot more in the confines of a PG rating in the 70's though. Jaws being a good example. ;)

I'm honestly surprised George didn't try to censor that, but censor the cell block shootout instead.

Why is Vader so angry when he says "Bring My shuttle"?

There is an answer and only one answer... it has nothing to do with Luke, well it is sort of connected with Luke in a way, but not directly about him.
