Here's just an idea I had. Any thoughts?

Yes. God yes. This is awesome. Amazing how such a small change makes him look soooo much more menacing.

I think it looks great... Although perhaps a red-eye like the Terminator may make it seem even more menacing (not sure why but, I think red is a more menacing colour).

Yeah, red might work really well too. I'll definitely try that out.

Author

Definitely red for sure.  Epic as that looks right now, I couldn't help but jokingly think "Hey, Grievous is part Jawa now!". lol

I like it too... I just wish they were Maul's eyes, and also I wish there was a way to imply that he is in fact a reconstructed Maul. What a missed opportunity by Lucas!

Easy :-p

In an AOTC edit, have Dooku and Sidious...or just Sidious depending on how you're treating Dooku, look upon a Bacta tank sustaining Maul's vivisected body in the scene at the very end of the film. In the background you might see the robot body waiting for implantation.

Ok maybe not easy. But if you had access to a big empty public aquarium and a dude in full Maul make up, it would be :)

There was a comic strip pic of Maul in bacta from the 'Infinities' comic somewhere on the Prequel Radical Redux thread a while back.

I've already concluded in my mind that I'm not going to try to do the whole "Grievous is Maul" subplot. It's way too much work for something that I don't think pays off ultimately. The story is supposed to be about Anakin, after all. Not Maul and Obi-Wan.

However, I do have plans to alter the Grievous character into somebody more compelling. Somebody who you actually can care about, and not just a random excuse to show off CGI.

The emphasis on Anakin is the single biggest mistake in crafting the prequels IMO. Anakin needs to be a smaller part of a larger story so that Darth Vader's "destiny" is no longer so over emphasised.

That's why giving other characters more important stuff to do is needed in my opinion. Obi Wan having a nemesis would make his story that little bit more interesting rather than the role he has now (bad detective filler)

...but that's just my opinion. Most of the ideas for blending Grievous and Maul are probably too ambitious anyway :)

It's not the emphasis on Anakin, it's the emphasis on his "destiny" as opposed to who he is and what he does.

The OT had an emphasis on Luke, but it was about who he was and what he did, not what he was destined to do or anything. He learned and grew as a character as we learned and grew as an audience.

That doesn't happen with Anakin, which is the problem. The prequels are too event-driven, so the characters take a back seat. It's the other way around in the OT, which made them so memorable.

As much as I love the visual changes, do you have any updates on how the movie is different plot-wise, anything to do with dialogue changes, etc.?

Author
Time

Oh yes, absolutely.
It's just that recently, I've been occupying myself with the menial grunt-work of visual changes.

I'm not sure if I've mentioned this outright, but I plan on adding Palpatine dialogue with an impersonator. I'm going to harmonize Anakin wanting to save Padme with his lust for power. Anakin in the end will be seduced by the Dark Side, and not tricked into it in order to save Padme. He knows what he's getting into, and I'm going to do that with new dialogue. It's kind of secretive as to how, at the moment.

Also, I have a rather BIG plan in the works for General Grievous, who will most likely be redubbed.

Apart from this, many of my changes are changing the tone and mood of scenes, such as Anakin killing Mace Windu, which I've recut in such a way that it feels like more of a powerful moment. Music and sound changes are a big part of that.

Keep up the good work! There's too many of these "ambitious" projects that go under.

Sounds good to me! :-D

Maybe his eyes could change colour to reflect his mood (like Artoo) they could sweep from on side to another when his emotional state changes.

Leading to mid-frames like this :

Author
Time

Yeah! They could change in a really retro way, like a slide projector. A little "ka-chunk" and a new color slides in.

Author
Time

I'd prefer it if the sweep occurred within each individual eye, but to each his own. I really effing love the idea though!

Author
Time

I think the projector noise might be overkill, but giving him more droid-esque eyes was certainly a wise choice.  I'll still eagerly await the results regardless of your choice.

I don't know.

The slide sound could work.

Who would have thought Vader's diving mask sound would become such a hit?

The scene in ANH where Threepio shows Ben the location of the Tractor Beam controls has some very intrusive sounds but they don't get in the way.

Yeah, Star Wars is not exactly about subtlety in character design. That's not a weakness, I would say it's a strength.

I thought it was Transylvanian myself.

Well, regardless of what his accent is, I think in order to make him a more serious character, his voice needs to be changed.

There are too many cartoony accents in the PT. We never had anything like that in the original Star Wars.

Are you altering the General's voice? I really hate his russian accent.

I always thought Griveous should kind of sound like the opposite of Vader. Instead of a deep booming voice, he should have a shrill serpent's tounge. Like this:

I like that idea, MrInsaneA! I like how he sounded in his first appearance in the Clone Wars microseries. It made him sound more intelligent, and way more menacing than the over the top villiany voice he has in the movie. I also very much agree he should be a lot less like Vader.

Good work on the eyes too, aalenfae!

Speaking of Clone Wars, I always preferred that Grievous not only for the voice, but for his more dignified erect posture and concealing cloak....in ROTS he's scuttling around like a robotic chicken, took away from him IMO. Nothing but new cgi can help though, alas!
