I've seen the film. It wasn't bad (though it was visually impressive, but that doesn't make a great film), it was ok. Definitely my least favorite of James Cameron's films and it is not something I'd care to view again. I just prefer all of Cameron's previous films (which I still love). My opinion of course.

how much do you want to bet he'll turn the Star Wars movies into 3D, say that this is how he originally intended to do them, and refuse to release them in their original 2D form ever again.

You must be too young to remember the 1D versions.  Why isn't there a petition for those to be released?

Ice Age 3 in 4D.

Ice age 3 sucked waste of a ticket price, i won't pay to see a fourth one.

Though i would pay to see wall-e 2, the jokes on pixar's competition, lol.

Funny thing is toy story 3 might suck and still will make pixar lots of money.

Heh heh.  I "watched the link" and the name of the link told me it was a joke.  However, I did not watch the video.

I think the "Star Trek 2009"/"Star Wars" comparison is based on the false assumption that Star Trek is 'thinking man's sci-fi,' so that when the movie is primarily a balls-to-the-wall adventure, it must be like Star Wars.

Yeah but I Abrams actually talked about making the movie like Star wars and the dvd doc says the same thing. So it's something that was in the mind of those making the movie when they made it. They were consciously imitating Star Wars.

Which they did by imitating a ball to the wall adventure vibe, as opposed to the 'show tunes and moralizing' vibe of the previous several Trek films.

Finally saw Avatar last night and I really enjoyed it.  It was the first 3D movie I've seen and I was surprised how subtle the effect was once I got used to it (in a good way - i liked that there were very few surprise "jumping out of the screen" moments).  The CG seemed very well done, although I'll be interested to see how it holds up in 2D.  The story and some of the dialogue was simple or silly in places, as expected.  But as both a movie and an experience, it worked for me.

So hands up everyone that really believed this 3D 'Avatar' thing would end up beating 'Titanic' s world-wide box-office total, before it opened? -  http://www.darkhorizons.com/news/16188/-avatar-overtakes-titanic-at-box-office

It's proving to be a 'game-changer' after all, and this latest 3D 'revival' is gathering momentum rapidly now if these latest high-profile 'conversions' are anything to go by -  http://www.heatvisionblog.com/2010/01/harry-potter-hallows-3D-clash-of-the-titans-3D.html

And as far as 'Avatar' itself, the extended Blu-ray version is shaping up to be an even better journey overall -  http://marketsaw.blogspot.com/2010/01/avatart-future-earth-pic-and-article.html

It was my first 3D movie too and I appreciated that most of the 3D was bringing depth to the screen, not poking things out of it (like the 3D of the 80's was).  There were a few instances where things appeared in front of the screen, but most of the time the screen was a window that you could see into.

And no, I never would have expected that Avatar would outpace Titanic to the top.  I mean, sure 3D screenings are more expensive, but the real surprise is that 75% of the tickets were for the 3D version.  That's a big percentage!  I wouldn't mind more movies being in 3D, as long as they don't go overboard and just bring some depth to the image.

I was actually a bit concerned I waited too long and Avatar would only be in 2D at this point.  As it turned out, there were only a couple of 2D screenings, and most of the available times were for 3D.

The only drawback was the expense.  It was an extra $3 for 3D, plus another $2 on top of that for XD, which I gather is a bigger screen and somewhat more comfy chair.  Of course, because the chair rocked, it meant I was getting kicked from behind much more often. I think next time I'll save the $2 and just go with the regular 3D.
