^Nice!  For the math challenged, that was what I was saying about my theatre as well.

Yeah well my local theater is 10.50 for a regular film showing or for regular non frills dlp.

The 3-D is projector imax not real film imax and so is 22.50 i believe i thought it was 24 but i checked i was wrong.

Around here it's $13.75 for RealD 3D, $15.00 for fake-max 3D, and $13.75 for the Imax 3D Experiance at the Henry Ford Imax in Detroit.

$22.50 is fucking insane, you need to find a new theater.

Back when Avatar came out, 11.00 was the standard price at my theater and real-d was 14.00. The fake-MAX screen there opened several months later (March of 2010 for Alice in Wonderland). By the time Tron: Legacy hit (exactly 1 year after Avatar), the standard price had creeped up to 11.50 and if I remember correctly real-d was 15.50, IMAX 16.50 and IMAX-3D was 17.50.

Not the theatre I mentioned before, but another one near me- changed their matinee times to "anything before noon".  So, I think there's basically one matinee a day, since the first show-time of the day is 10:00.

We went to go see a show at 4:45P because I thought I'd save $4 a ticket that way.  Nope, it was $10.50 already.

But I'm glad I don't live near skyjedi and have to pay his prices.

The matinee for 3-D Imax is 14.00.

12.50 on a saturday i think, and for all non new releases or showcase titles.

Avatar was indeed 20 +dollars a ticket, for the extended cut.

Which i did not bother going to see.

There are some second run theaters that show maybe 2 or 3 films in some nearby towns or cities, but usually old releases of family fare or cartoons.

And the prints are of course very worn.  The seating uncomfortable the place dirty and the sound none too good.

Never will we see 6.50 evening prices for first run films ever again or even 5.50 or whatever the price was when the local theater was showing the special edition of return of the jedi in 1997.

When a matinee was i think 4.50 cents.

The first film i can remember paying more than 5 bucks to see in a theater first run was Star Trek First Contact.

Since then prices have doubled for regular films, tripled for 3-D.

Last film i paid full price to see a even 10 dollars was Indiana Jones IV, complete and utter waste of time and money, crap and awful movie which was laughably bad.

So does anyone here have a 3D set up? I am in the process of getting the gear I need for my 3D ready HDTV, have a nice Panasonic 3D Blu-ray player(and going to get Avatar 3D for FREE)a Mitsubishi 3D Starter Kit, and getting 2 more pairs of glasses, I can't wait, but LOL, I only have 3 3D movies counting the free Avatar that is coming, and they are Resident Evil Afterlife and Drive Angry.

I would really like to get one of those 42" or 47" Vizios that have recently come out.  The passive screens are pretty much superior to the active ones in my opinion.  And they're so cheap, to boot! (42" is <$700).

I just don't really have a place to put one.  Our family room entertainment centre can only hold a 27" CRT or a 32" LCD/Plasma.  We've had the entertainment centre about 8 years but have only had the 32" 720p LCD that's in it for about 2.5.  My kids have already taken a serious toll on it (with scissors) and so I really wouldn't mind replacing the whole outfit and putting a new 40-something inch on the wall.  But then we'd need some new media/equipment rack too...  It wouldn't end up costing that much, but I'll probably still save my pennies.

The real issue with that is that I don't do any "formal" watching in my family room.  We do all of the hardcore stuff in the basement with the big screen, big sound and the fancy chairs.  It might kill me to upgrade to 3D in the family room first, because I wouldn't know where to watch a movie anymore.  Upstairs on the relatively small screen in 3D, or downstairs...  :(  Darn.

However, there are some exciting projector solutions in the wings.  Not exactly plug and play, but you can set up some nice dual projector rigs with stuff that's just come out.  But it gets pricey pretty quick.  I'm waiting for some new stuff that might be cheaper to hit the street... still thinking I might do a 3D upgrade in the basement this fall.

THEN I can get a new TV in my family room.

I recently upgraded to an LG 42" LED TV with active shutter glasses. I wasn't in the market for one but at the bargain price of £450 it was too good to pass up and I figured it would make a good entry into the world of 3D.

Thanks to my existing Sky+HD box it was simple enough to get the Sky 3D channel at no extra cost. I've watched some football and rugby on it but if I'm being honest the 3D sports coverage is a bit hit and miss. I managed to catch Toy Story 2 a couple of weeks ago, it was alright but the movie wasn't made in 3D so didn't show off the benefits of 3D.

I've also hooked up my PS3 and thanks to ebay, I acquired the Samsung exclusive blu-ray of Monsters Vs Aliens. The quality is awesome compared to broadcast 3D and I would recommend this disc to anyone wishing to demo their kit.

I plan on trying to get Avatar and all 4 Shrek movies via ebay in the future but I don't want to pay stupid money for them. I also want to get Tron Legacy so I can compare it to the cinema experience and the 2010 World Cup so I can compare it to the broadcast quality 3D football.

Also, when the Playstation Store reopens, I plan on getting my free copy of Wipeout HD to test out the 3D gaming experience!

Actually, they re-rendered the movie in 3D. Which is the way to go with movies like that. Impressive they still had the files there with all the old textures and stuff.

Time for Toy Story 1 & 2 Special Edition, re-rendered with the Toy Story 3 character models? ;-)

That, I didn't know. I wasn't overly impressed with Toy Story 2 and put it down to the conversion. Maybe it has something to do with the broadcast quality (1080i).

So... Lion King 3D was the top grossing film in theatres last week with $22.1 M and a total of $61.7M (almost as much money as all 6 Star Wars movies on BD)... not too shabby, especially considering it's on 3D BD in about a week.

Maybe 3D in theatres isn't dead after all...

Also, I'm pretty sure I'm buying an Optoma HD3300 in a couple of weeks.  I'm pretty excited.  My home theatre's needed a PJ upgrade for a while and this might be the one I was saving for.

I am so happy to hear so many of you will be buying 3D TVs. That will hopefully drive the price of non-3D TVs down to a level I am willing to pay for it!

Could be.  There's about $5 worth of cost to a TV manufacturer to support 3D.  What I think we'll see is that 3D TV prices drop to where 2D prices are and then they'll stop making 2D only TVs.  If you buy a new TV, it will support 3D, and you can just ignore the feature if you 'd like.

Just like how they don't sell B&W TVs anywhere or tube TVs.  Newer TVs didn't make those older TVs cheap (at least, not for very long) they just made them non-existant.

But I can make you a very attractive deal on an 8 year old projector.  It was only 20,000 yen when I bought it then.

A better comparison would probably be 1080p vs 720p.  The over abundance of 1080p models didn't really make 720p cheaper- at least not for more than a couple of months- it just made 720p obsolete about a certain size.  You can't really go looking for 50" 720p sets at some discount below 1080p sets.  They just don't exist.

Or maybe back in the day when getting a DVD player or a receiver that could process DTS was a real luxury.  Now all of them have it.  They were initially priced high, the price came down, and they merged with the "non-luxury" line.
