I wish Anakin and Padme had been played by......

Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. They were the lead couple in "The Notebook," and they were soooooooooooooo much better together than Hayden and Natalie. I don't know how many folks here have seen "The Notebook" but what those two actors did with a sappy love story is amazing. The dialogue wasn't that much better than the stuff in "Attack of the Clones" but they were so good. They had tons of energy, they had the love/hate Han/Leia thing going on and they actually looked like they were in love. Ryan is also great at playing dark and nasty characters and Rachel has a lot more feistiness (she was awesome as the bitchy Regina George in "Mean Girls" and she was also really good in "Wedding Crashers" and "The Family Stone").

I'd love to trade Hayden and Natalie to "The Notebook" for Rachel and Ryan to be in Clones and Sith. I'll trade my first and second round draft picks too

I had no problem with Hayden and Portman in the PT. My biggest beef was the fact that their acting sucked (mostly due to Lucas's directing). They looked the part perfectly, its just that the script screwed them over.

Na, I actually would get Joaquin Phoenix to play Anakin Skywalker in the prequels. He is a very good actor and full of pontential.

Actually kev J. Phoenix would be a really good choice and would have brought a totally different but probably very on target essence to the role. Good call.

What would have been neat is to see Nate Hamill play Anakin (Mark Hamill's son). He was the right age but the kid really isn't that big of an actor. Which is a shame because that might have been neat.

that would have been the shit if he played anakin. But i don't mind Hayden and Natalie its just Lucas's fault there acting wasn't good cuz of his weird directing

The casting of Anakin was bad all the way around. I honestly think that even with the same crappy scripts and directing, the prequels would have been a thousand times better if Haley Joel Osment played Anakin in Ep 1 and Leo DiCaprio had played him in Ep 2-3.

But in an ideal world, everybody would have been older and it wouldn't have been this "teen steam" we got. No Qui-Gon -- Kenneth Branagh as Obi-Wan (older and wiser from the start, like Ewan played him in RotS), Leo or Christian Bale or even Russell Crowe (who, back in 1999, wasn't the megastar he's since become), all who could actually pass for a young Sebastian Shaw. Somebody who was going to be 30ish at the time of Ep III.

And somebody less demure for Amidala. Perhaps Izabella Scorupco or Kate Beckinsale (I'd pair the former with Crowe, the latter with DiCaprio or Bale).

What else? There wouldn't be a Naboo; it would have been set on Alderaan, so we'd give a damn when it is destroyed in Ep IV. Darth Maul would have survived through to Episode III, where Vader would kill him to take his place at Palpatine's side upon a genuine lure to the dark side in a quest for power. The Wookiees and the Alliance heads (esp. Mon Mothma, Dodonna, and Ackbar) would have figured into the plot significantly. And we wouldn't have seen force lightning from anybody other than Palpatine. Preferably against Yoda for the first time.

Dang why didnt i think of that?
I would have looked for an actress who resembles a young Carrie Fisher.
Fine, mister Lucas, while you're at it why dont you replace Lando with will smith?

Actually, it was probably a good thing (IMO) that Lucas was the one selecting the actors, because imagine if Hollywood in the current state it is in selected the actors.

Hey, does anyone know anything about Jonathan Brandis supposedly auditioning or being in the running for Anakin? I read that on Imdb.com a zillion years ago, and I never confirmed it anywhere else. He could have done a good job, I think. I mean, based on his work in "Sidekicks." Maybe I'm biased; we were born in the same town.

I've heard some stories about him trying out for the part. It's really creepy though that he killed himself two years ago. It still doesn't seem real.

Yeah, that was a real shock when I heard about it. The last person in the world you would have imagined killing themselves. Very upsetting. I would have liked to see him swinging a lightsaber around. Maybe one day his audition tape will surface.

I think Natale Portman was all right but Hayden sucked, Vader should of been played by Christian Bale.

I think its unfair to blame them two, too much, as said they looked the part to me as well, and I do wonder what performances they would have given without the bearded one directing......

Please!! Hayden(Anakin) represents who will be the baddest and most feared dude in the Galactic Empire(Vader). He cannot possibly portray that and he didn't. Hayden Christiansen is way to winey and feminane to represent what will become Vader. Plus this hack actor got to make out with Natalee Portman. I wonder if he hit it?

...which is precisely the point of the prequels showing the 'tragedy' of Darth Vader, is it not? Your rather sexist appraisal of Hayden aside, the whole point is that we never see who Vader 'really' is in the original trilogy...he is ruthless but eventually turns back to the light side before he dies. I think that is one aspect of the prequels that Lucas got right in theory and, like almost everything else in the prequels, failed miserably at in practice. That Vader did not come from this ruthless origin, but rather suffered a conflicted descent into the darkside, one in which he ended up destroying all that he loved and that loved him and was left with nothing but the Emperor and the darkside is an AMAZING idea. I think that having some macho d00d (like I'm sure we would all imagine yourself) playing Anakin would have been inappropriate. It is unfortunate that Lucas could not give his really great overarching storyline to someone with a bit more tact at writing/directing and watch it turn into more Star Wars magic. I'd imagine such greatness would have been lost on you anyways.

seriously i dont know how much better other actors wouldve been with those lines and lucas' direction, although i dont think it wouldve hurt.
maybe hayden and natalie need more coddling than most actors

I think that's very true. Liam, Ewan, Ian McD, Christopher Lee ... they all did quite well in spite of Lucas. Natalie, Jake and Hayden were all horribly wooden.

Thing is, Harrison Ford had the balls to say "You can type this, George, but you can't say it." So he improvised lines and worked some of the wordy crap down to what ultimately sold on screen. As I understand it, the "I Love You/I Know" from ESB was whittled down by Harrison and Carrie from a page and a half of typical Lucas dialogue. But in the Prequels, none of the actors said "You know, I think I'll use a contraction here where it doesn't have one so it'll roll of the tongue better." The result: "You are studying to be a Jedi, I am a Senator. If you follow your thoughts to conclusion they will take us to a place that we cannot go."

Find the damned apostrophe on a typewriter, George.

Best Anakin/Padme combo EVAR:

Marty Feldman and Grace Jones.

C'mon... try to prove me wrong.
For as much as some people claim to hate what Star Wars has become, they sure seem incapable of shutting up about it.

It probably would have sucked regardless of who was playing who.
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

Red heads ROCK. Blondes do not rock. Nuff said.
