"It was a long time ago -- 30 years to be exact -- in a galaxy not so far away when Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back was first released to movie theaters. Considered by many to be the greatest movie sequel of all time"

via: Spike.com (http://www.spike.com/blog/spike-celebrates/95561)

"That is why Spike will be throwing a party on air and in Times Square. Spike is inviting its viewers and the trilogy's loyal fans to view a special simulcast of The Empire Strikes Back the same day at 4:00 PM ET on MTV's 44 1/2 foot video board."

"I bring cam-corder. Record show. Nice Day. Wanted to do a live group commentary. Didn't happen..."

"We received this bootleg of the ESB Spike broadcast in Times Square. Since there was no audio, %20 added fourteen fan commentary or ESB 30th anniversary podcasts which were sync'd up at the starting point of the crawl. Since a DVD can only have eight audio tracks, each of the commentaries were mono'd and shifted to the left or right channel. Use this disc to practice your audio shifting and commentary channel switching abilities, while you get an in-depth listen to the public's continued fascination with this movie sequel."

The results: "AN EMPIRE SPIK BOOTLEG - FAN COMMENTARY EDITION"

Please, Please, Please take a bootleg picture of your viewing experience!  It's been rumored to be phun...

I'll post some mini-reviews of each of the commentaries.  They run the full fan experience, from people just riffing off the cuff full of non-sequitors, to lots of general knowledge or factoids, to some serious indepth discussion of the 70mm prints, and several mentions of OT.com projects (Building Empire, EDITDROID, Adywan).

I found it phun to bounce around commentaries, using the potential of the remote to alleviate boredom.  In this format, the disc can be used to understand how the general fan community perceives certain segments of the film.  Instead of watching the whole film, you can watch one scene but listen to the multiple commentaries, to learn what issues these folks latched onto.  For instance Lando's clothing choice at the end, is something multiple commentaries focused on.

For informative commentaries try:

The Force Cast was joined by Paul Bateman of http://ralphmcquarrie.com/.

Paul Bateman interview: http://starwarsmicromachines.wordpress.com/2010/06/16/exclusive-interview-with-paul-bateman-about-ralph-mcquarries-original-micro-machines-artwork/

Commentary Track Stars features Michael Coate who has done extensive research into the where and what of the original Star Wars theatrical releases.
