A summary of GOUT synced Video, Audio and Subtitle sources - WORK IN PROGRESS

Author
Time
 (Edited)

Please help - this is a work in progress. All additions, corrections, proof, quotes, post links, NFO information is appreciated.....

One good thing about the 2006 DVD Theatrical Bonus discs from the Limited Edition release is that it has given us a standard - the GOUT.

This was available in PAL (4% speed-up) or NTSC (correct speed).

My interpretation of the term "GOUT synced" is audio synced to the NTSC GOUT video or video synced to the NTSC GOUT audio.

The trouble is, I have forgotten or do not know what other audio/video I can sync my favourite audio/video to.

The aim of this post is to list all possible variants of GOUT synced. I will list full DVD releases, audio recreations, audio re-masters, bit perfect audio rips, recreated subtitles and anything else that anyone else can tell me about....

There are of course those PAL GOUT DVD's that were released in numerous European countries so I will try to list those as "PAL GOUT synced" at the end.

There's a little divergence at ROTJ.  Properly adjusted, the PAL SW and ESB tracks will exactly sync with NTSC SW and ESB tracks, but this is not the case with ROTJ.

The divergence is very small, but noticeable if you watch mismatched audio and video carefully.  So technically there are two ROTJ GOUT standards: NTSC, which many older, smaller, projects use, and adjusted PAL, which DJ and Harmy use (due to better image quality on the PAL transfer).

A mismatch in one direction sounds slightly more natural than a mismatch in the other direction, because slightly-delayed audio is more natural than audio that leads the video.  i.e. audio derived from PAL muxed with video derived from NTSC, even though it's a mismatch, will sound more natural than vice-versa.  So IMO PAL-derived ROTJ audio is better if you have to choose just one version.

Long story short, the GOUT is not one standard for ROTJ, but two.  But it's one standard for the other films.

Post 1 is now updated with as detail much as I know.

As and when I am told of any corrections to make or additions to add, I will amend that post.

The thing that suprised me was the lack of available subtitles.

I was also sure that a full set of "Commentary for visually impaired" were available and that either the DC commentary track or a modified 2004 DVD commentary track were available too.

My memory must be playing tricks on me!!

I believe the AC-3 track on my SWE disc was at 256kbps, maybe good to know if you remux it with another track, don't remember if it worked for me but I think it's possible to go with a 448kbps track if you want to.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

Check Project Threepio for subtitles.  Currently at ten languages, but it should get to eleven or twelve pretty soon.  Keeping my fingers crossed.

Also, FYI, there's an Italian dub on the PAL GOUT, and supposedly a Japanese dub on the Japanese Region 2 NTSC GOUT (I've never heard it).

In that case, the following releases scripts are to be added to Post 1:-

Mallwalker Ep4 Dark Sega

Mallwalker Ep5 Dark Sega

Mallwalker Ep6 Dark Sega

and

Mallwalker Ep4 X9

That was pretty much where I was as I was trying to remember what was available to go with what. In truth, what I wrote down was double what I thought there was. It was then that I decided to start this thread.

Post 1 has been updated with the Project Threepio subtitles, the CatBus sync's of the Darth Mallwalker "rips" and the Darth Mallwalker scripts.

Have I missed anything???

Update - hairy_hen audio mixes added but only accurate to the best of my knowledge.

Is there a GOUT-sync'ing how-to somewhere on OT? I would like to GOUT-sync my '92 Letterbox captures after I'm done with PS78.

russs15: Can you list the sources (e.g., GOUT, '93 LD, etc.) for each video entry?

Also, I've just learned that Darth Mallwalker's IVTC script for The Starkiller's 1982 Video Rental Library VHS preservation does GOUT-sync'ing as well.

I have started going back through the list to add whatever info I can regarding the source of the audio as well as the bitrate. I have so far only got as far as the DJ V3 set but will complete the list as soon as possible.

Also, I've just learned that Darth Mallwalker's IVTC script for The Starkiller's 1982 Video Rental Library VHS preservation does GOUT-sync'ing as well.

I was going to add that tonight as I have just read the response from Darth Mallwalker in the other thread

EDIT: I have added the script and if anyone else can help me identify sources of any of the audio's from Post 1 that do not have a source against them, it would be very helpful

Is there a GOUT-sync'ing how-to somewhere on OT? I would like to GOUT-sync my '92 Letterbox captures after I'm done with PS78.

depends on the software you are using.

usually you just add the audio track as

the sound portion, and mutiplex it with

the video. using the correct offsets. (if any).

that's it.

I read this as a "how do I GOUT sync a random video (or audio) to the GOUT to which the answer is that this is not the droid you are looking for. I have not got the foggiest how to do this.

If it is as per the last response, stripping (demuxing) a known GOUT source and remuxing with another GOUT source, the answer is that it is pathetically easy (on a Windows PC with free software) and I will gladly  help anyone out...

I was asking about the former; i.e., GOUT-sync'ing a random video. I think I just need to IVTC, split at the reel-changeovers, add-in blanks for lost frames (if any), and then reassemble.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

I have updated Post 1 with everything I have learned so far (watch this space) regarding the official 2006 GOUT releases.

I have listed the Video, Audio and Subtitle sources for all (current) known country/language variations in both NTSC and PAL formats.

The only actual "NEW" thing I have proven is the Japanese Audio and Subtitles from the Japanese 2006 release and 2009 re-release........

The hairy hen Star Wars V2 stereo mix has also been added.

I think that DVD back cover is the Spanish version......

Brazilian - O Retorno de Jedi

Spanish - El Retorno del Jedi

However, that image confirms my thoughts that the German and Spanish discs are the same but with a different language film name on the box.

Before I add both to Post 1, is Brazil NTSC or PAL????

EDIT:

Brazilian and Spanish versions both added to Post 1

Many apologies about the amount of information now in Post 1 as there is now far too much of it. This project has ended up far bigger than I ever thought it would be!!

Brazil is weird.  When they were analog, they were a 480i60 variant of PAL.

Their DVDs are NTSC and their digital television is based on the system Japan uses.

It must be how I am wired!!

My use here is not to capture, preserve, edit, clean up etc

I do lists and always have done in my time here!! I do them to help me out but they often help others.

ie  List of preservation transfers (very out of date)

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/russdawson/gtf/

List of PAL VHS

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/PAL-VHS-Archive-Collection/topic/3829/

Different audio dialogues in the OT

I am just happy if any of what I do may be of use to others..........

Meanwhile, I have changed Brazil from PAL to NTSC in Post 1.

Just remembered images.google.com has a 'find similar image' component, so throw in a known high resolution cover: (good for finding overseas stores)

http://be.cherchons.com/dvd-star-wars-episode-4_1_0.html

(this is the Canadian French?)

http://www.priceminister.com/offer/buy/48077350/sort0/filter20/Star-Wars-Un-Nouvel-Espoir-Episode-Iv-Ed-Collector-DVD-Zone-2.html

This one seems to have an extra line of text under 'A New Hope', and the site is Turkish?

http://www.filmifullizle.com/kategori/filmler/aksiyon/page/8

At first thought it was the German but the text goes farther down the 'S' in Wars.  The site use some Cyrillic alphabet, so see if you all recognize something:

This one looks kinda Arabic... possibly: (maybe not, the domain .in is India)

*EDIT* Woah look at the title of this one!  Maybe this is the Brazilian?

This could be an Italian:

[ooops wrong release] Guess this is the widescreen (Panoaromique) French (similar to Canada?):

Here's that two lines titled version and it's Greece which partly explains things:
