Info: A new edit (The Lost Cut - it was a prank; but some good info in here)

(Edited)

A friend of mine says that he just got a DVD of a new edit of Star Wars from some dealer through the mail. He says it’s longer and it has different music and was edited by different people. He says that he wasn’t too happy with it because the editor (who calls himself John Jympson) put in a lot of extraneous scenes that slow the plot down. It was also irritating because the whole thing was in black-and-white; I told him he paid too much for it.

Apparently the quality is awful to begin with. However, I thought some of you fan-edit collectors might be interested because this is a lot longer than the original version and it has some new scenes. Han kisses someone else in this version, the end battle is all messed up, they put the original “furry” Jabba back in (probably from an SE documentary), Darth Vader’s voice is weird, and all the special effects look like cartoons (he says the lasers look like little arrows). Some edit! I’d rather watch the 2004 DVD’s (and that’s saying a lot).

But it has got some deleted scenes.

Still, this would be interesting to see.

Ooh, a laserdisc. The Cheat's playin' something on a laserdisc.
Everything is better on a laserdisc. Whatever happened to the laserdisc? Laserdisc!

Are you saying that you have (or your friend has) a copy of THE "Lost Cut" that was edited by John Jympson before he was fired and replaced by Richard Chew and Paul Hirsch?? I have heard rumors of Lost Cut bootlegs but I never believed them. Or is this a fan edit meant to replicate the Lost Cut? I wonder if this is actually Deleted Magic... or a joke.
Greedo shoots first? Not in my DVD player.

Either way let one of us know how to get a copy

Hmmm...Any WWII aerial combat footage standing in for unfinished FX shots in this thing?

I bet Garrett would love to get his hands on this.

That would be the holy grail of holy grails. My God, I don't care what the quality is, and while we've seen some the footage...the entire lost cut...uh yeah, anyone here on this forum would give their first born to see that.
16 years I wait and this is what I get???

I can't help but laugh at this. If this is legit, it'd be like Obi-wanton said, and this is kind of like someone walking into a market with the Holy Grail and asking "Does anyone want to buy this? It's made of wood, and is crappy quality, but I figure someone who collects cups might want one."

if this is legit and Davis can get one of us a copy I say we set up a pay it forward for this as its probably a bit risky to torrent.

This sounds too good to be true. I've heard of this edit as well and I would LOVE to see it.

But, I highly doubt it is authentic. Would love to be proved wrong though?

The Lost Cut? I seem to remember hearing about that before. I assumed it wasn't, mostly because I thought the title was for a reason and it wasn't readily available.

I have no idea. I'll have to ask him.

I've never actually seen this disk. Once I get my burner running, I could ask him to borrow it and then burn a copy and send it to you to identify it. The only problem being that the disc is probably dual-layer and I only have a single layer burner. Maybe I could put it on two discs in different parts.

Wow- had no idea it was this rare. If it's what you think it is, which I don't know. It did seem weird that the editor would degrade the picture and the effects for a new edit- maybe it was an attempt to make it look old-fashioned.

But I repeat- I haven't seen this. I don't want to get your hopes up if it turns out to be fake.

If it is dual-layer, please split it up to two discs. If this is indeed the Lost Cut, there shouldn't be ANY quality degration.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

This does indeed smell fake, but we need to see it to be sure.

The Lost Cut has never surfaced before to my knowledge; it remains buried in the Lucasfilm archives for now. I've heard of people claiming to have it, but proof never appears.

Let's see the proof. Screenshots, even, anything unseen.

If your friend isn't lying, the editor of that cut didn't deliberately degrade the quality. The edit is 30 years old.
The edit you're describing was a rough cut assembled from black and white footage as a temp track to see what the finished film would look like. It is, in essence, the workprint of Star Wars.
If you get ahold of it, rip the disc and burn the .vobs to two dvds and pass them along to Rikter or myself. Either of us could easily reassemble the halves and make you a DL disc, share said disc with others, and be able to tell rather quickly if the disc is real or a forgery.

So this is not actually the lost cut then, is it? From the snips I've seen in the Empire of Dreams, the lost cut looks like it was in color, not black and white.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

We don't know yet, which is why we need independant confirmation.

I'll be interested in the results of this analysis, but the cynic in me is hearing Comic Book Guy shouting "The lost alternate ending of The Empire Strikes Back ... CHEWBACCA IS LUKE'S FATHER?!?!?!?!?!"

Be wary. I smell a plant.

The Lost Cut *is* in fact in black and white. The color shots you see from it are just stills that have been printed in color. The footage we do have from the Lost Cut (extended Cantina sequence from Behind The Magic, Death Star hallway shootouts on Empire Of Dreams with drawn-in white arrows for blaster fire) is definitely in black and white.

Whatever this supposed footage is, it would still be interesting even if it was just someone's reconstruction. Some of us have talked about creating a virtual Lost Cut in the past, but the closest I've seen anyone come to it so far is in Garrett's Deleted Magic. And that's mostly in color.

Oops... one more thing: there are pieces of color footage of lost scenes that are in color, such as the Biggs Footage, the Landspeeder repair shots from Empire Of Dreams, etc. But the entire Lost Cut/John Jympson edit has only been printed in black and white thus far, according to David West Reynolds.
