I’m sure that some of you are familiar with some of the EU books that give Coruscant as being partly covered by water. Well, in the early 90’s, when people like Michael P. Kube-McDowell were allowed to write novels involving Coruscant, Mc-Dowell argued with Lucas, saying that a planet cannot possibly be completely covered by a city, as water is essential for survival, and that, due to the demands of the huge population of a planet completely covered by buildings, supplies could not be shipped from off-world at the rate that would be needed. Lucas, however, seemingly ingnored this idea in the PT and in the ROTJ SE, saying his vision was that it was completely a city-planet, regardless.
However, in ROTS, he had a scene on Coruscant of it raining…
So, he therefore contradicted his own “vision,” and elevated the ideas of those EU authors (who argued with him of the on the issue of water on Coruscant) into G-canon.
