I’m going to try to pull this off, with Revenge of the Sith as my pilot project just because I have it at hand…

I’m taking the movies, primarily the prequels, and I’m going to try to cut them into a series of approx. 21-minute episodes, which will be somewhat abridged from their original form, but might include variant footage. When I have some of these cut I’ll make further note.

I know already I’ll be trimming down the Obi-wan/Grievous battle a bit in ROTS.

This is actually a pretty good idea for the PT. I had been trying to brainstorm ways to show the best bits, but couldn't resolve the time jumps that would take place. This might be one solution.

Interesting. That would very much heighten your chances to remove a lot of scenes. You could probably even find a way to completely remove Grievous if you wanted to. Especially if every Ep. had its own mini crawl.

So are you going to show anything from Ep. 4-6 at all? Will the series end with at the end of ROTS? You said you would primarily use ROTS, so will the footage used from the other two prequels be flashbacks?

ROTS just happens to be the only prequel I have at hand right now, as I don't have a VCR (for TPM) and my DVD of AOTC is hopelessly damaged, and I'll prolly have to download those.

I've made a few snips. This is really a pilot, it's not final product quality as I really can't pull that off, but I'm doing what I can.

I've left most of ROTS intact so far with only small cuts - I'm right now working on the water-ballet scene - someone else here can probably edit better than I can. I might also stitch these back into a full length movie.

Current noticeable changes:

1. Anakin no longer mentions "vulture droids" (metaphor to earth that doesn't work)
2. Attack droids' cartooney dialogue reduced
3. Several close-up "beat" shots cut
4. References to "democracy" removed, as the Republic is, well, a republic, not a democracy (factual error)
5. Some of the cornier dialogue between Anakin and Padmé has been cut

Also a couple pan shots were cut.

A while back I suggested an idea of taking the prequel trilogy and cutting it into chapters like the Clone Wars cartoons, but the idea never really amounted to anything. I am glad that something similar to that is in the works.

For the record, would anyone be willing to help me with crawls for this? There's really nothing on Linux that I know of will generate them...and on XP I have memory and drivespace limitations :/

Also, as much as I've tried, I can't get every subep to open in space, so I might need some transitions or something, but I might release without opeds first, or as a compiled version...

This looks like a pretty cool project.

Instead of having the opening crawl for every episode how about having an opening title credit sequence? That would make it feel more like a TV series than an opening crawl and give this project a really unique feel to it. That way you wouldn't have to have every episode start with a space shot.

That could work too, and would be easier to pull off with the tools I have.

I might try to make crawls for a recombined version (which would indeed be shorter than the actual movie).

Source footage: 1h 05m 45s

Combining the 3 pieces I've done so far and removing redundant footage*: 59m 43s

* I repeat part of the last scene in the next segment

Additional noticeable changes:

6. No damn midichlorians! Palpatine says "he could use the Force to create life" (jerky cut there, though)
7. Trimmed out as much as I could (not all unfortunately) of Obi-wan on the back of that damn lizard
8. Obi-wan only shoots Grievous once; I thought several shots was gratuitous

Still not sure what I want to do about the OPED. The working copies, warts and all, are 200 MB apiece and there are 3 of them.

Are you trying to give this a real television feel? ie:

'Previously...on star wars' - where applicable
Teaser act / Intro
Title sequence
rest of the episode

Sounds quite interesting so far...

btw i agree that a crawl sequence on every ep would get old fast.

You've got my interest on how the hell your going to do this. Each episode will need to leave a feeling of what happens next rather than a "cut/cue" next episode. Even given that the viewer has seen this before hand. Rather you than me!

Sounds like a very interesting project.Just one thing is that the description of the republic is not factually incorrrect:A republic is a state not governed by a single head of state such as king/queen or an emperor and is governed by elected representatives i.e.the senate.

A NICE CLIFFENDER FOR AN EPISODE WOULD BE THAT VERY FIGHT. YOU COULD END IN WITH OBI WAN DANGLING FROM THE LANDING PLATFORM. DOES HE SURVIVE OR PLUMMET TO HIS DEATH ??? FIND OUT NEXT EPISODE.


AS FAR AS AN OPENING SEQUENCE GOES, WHY NOT USE THE OPENING OF THE ACTUAL DVD ??? IT HAS SCENES INSIDE THE STAR WARS LOGO. THIS COULD BE THE EASIEST THING FOR YOU TO USE.

I had the idea of turning the movies into a TV series, too!
I wanted to change it into something in O.C.-style (especially the Anakin-Padmé-Love-Story), so I had in mind to change the music and use songs from today. All in all it was once again for playing around, but there was no serious interest in doing it.
I also did some video clips to test it, and I want to show them to you!

Of course they are conceptual work, so don't expect too much quality!

That opening sequence was pretty freagin' cool. I'd really like to see a concept like that used for the opening of each episode. Hell, you could take it as is and go with it, with maybe an actual title setup for the very end of the intro (rather than just "Star Wars"). Still, excellent, excellent execution.

Here is another one. It's Qui-Gon's death and what comes afterwards with the live version of "My Hero" (which is the title song from the intro).
It's a bit more quiet in the beginning than the original version, so I thought it would be cool to have this piece of music when one of our heroes dies. One disadvantage of this piece is that because of it being a live version you hear the audience screaming and whistling. But, once again, it's just a concept.

Star Wars Season 1 Qui-Gon's Death

This would have been a nice end for the first season, but the scenes with the Obi-Wan Yoda talk, the funeral and the celebration are still left (each movie is divided into one season, six episodes, each 20 minutes long).

I also thought of using another title song for the next season, because with having this version of "My Hero" in the end of this season, it maybe feels like the "hero chapter" is finished now. One of my favorite songs which could be used is "Dare You To Move" by Switchfoot .

But it would also be cool after that Qui-Gon is gone now to see the remaining/new heroes in the intro of the second season. And leaving "My Hero" in there would give some kind of continuity to it, since ten years have passed between the two seasons and you all know that Episode II is different from Episode I.


To be honest, I don't feel motivated to do this. Maybe there's someone who would like to do the editing and I would come up with some ideas and do some more video clips. So, someone interested?????

As I get into this, I find myself not all that capable of editing the video well. It doesn't help that, with my tools, it's not as easy as editing audio tracks with Audacity. (I only have avidemux and virtual dub.) But certainly, editing audio has been something I've been good at for years.

Right now, I only have a couple ideas. But I like Master Qui-Gon's ideas, they certainly work well with the idea of a modern TV series! I might pick up a few more ideas that way ?

To give it more the look of a TV show, as I may have mentioned, I'm cutting the aspect ratio down to the HDTV 16:9, instead of 2.35:1 - that's not that much of a loss though, for the first decade of my SW experience, except for one viewing each of SW:SE and ROTJ:SE all I had was the fullscreen...
