A New direction for Lucasfilm Animation — Page 2

Also, FOX owns Star Wars '77 perpetually. I can imagine Disney will eventually figure out a distribution deal, but this is even more worrisome than the 2020-date FOX has distribution for the other films up until.

Fox may own the distribution rights but since the late nineties Lucasfilm is the owner of Star Wars '77. It is Disney/Lucasfilm that decides when/if something is going to be distributed. I can't see the situation is any different now than it was before the deal with Disney.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

The ground is moving beneath the entire Star Wars franchise.

As for the new animated show, I'm putting my money on an Old Republic series.  The cinematic trailers for the video game almost feel like they were produced to test the waters (a 'pilot episode' of sorts).

I'm just glad the focus is shifting away from the Clone Wars era that began in Episode II.  After a decade of watching Republic clones vs Separatist droids, I feel like it has played itself out.  It's time for something a little different...

Seconded. Finally we can put those lame wars to rest and explore something new. Also, this isn't a surprise really now that they're making sequels. Prequels need to be forgotten, they're yesterday's news now and Disney seems to get it.

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

^I think this is too harsh. Quite honestly, long before the prequels came out, what I wanted out of them was the Clone Wars. Sure, they're now sandwiched between two fair movies at best (that is my opinion, as I do enjoy them despite their significant inferiority to the OT), but if they actually tell a good tale and fill in the gap of what I'd hoped from the pre-OT Star Wars anyway, I'm glad that it gets lots of time to tell the tale. I too am saddened at the news, but it did have to wrap up at some point.

That said, it is also good that things are finally moving on a bit. It would be neat to explore other time frames in the universe.

I don' think it's a surprise at all - considering they never intended to make an eternally long TV series. This is good news.
It's a comfort that Disney's not going to keep up The Clone Wars - keeping it alive as some zombie show.

People are just trying to sensationalize the news that Season 5 was the last complete season.
There are still a bunch of episodes to show. They're just not going to broadcast them on Cartoon Network.

Cartoon network moving the show to Saturday mornings was a decision that predated the Disney thing, so I have to wonder how long the show would have gone on even with George still in charge. When Young Indy was canceled, he kept going with a handful of TV movies to wrap it up that showed on cable, which really doesn't sound much different than what is happening now anyway.

Clone Wars has arguably done a lot better than Young Indy in the ratings. The Sat AM only timeslot seems to have ultimately doomed some other Cartoon Network shows though.

As most of the toys I see on the shelves lately are CW related, Hasbro has got to be hoping the new films will inject new blood into the line.

Well, seems like that "Bonus content" is pretty much nothing.

http://www.theforce.net/topstory/story/Report_TCW_Bonus_Content_To_Be_Two_Story_Arcs_150831.asp

I can not express with words how much more angry this made me.  WHAT HAPPENS TO MAUL?!  AND DON"T YOU DARE TELL ME HE'S IN EPISODE 7!

And really who care about the bounty hunters, except for Boba Fett.  They're cool characters, but it isn't what's needed to end this series.  Cad Bane And Aurra Sing make no difference.

At the least I hope the clone arc shows the fate of Rex (or any of the other important clone people I'm forgetting about).

Episode 7 better be worth it.

I liked TCW, but frankly I'm really glad "Detours" wont see the light of day. Those clips were atrociously unfunny.

it's a shame, Clone Wars really deserved a final season , if only to put a bit of a gap between Ahsoka leaving and Episode 4, the recent episodes really fleshed out Anakin's and the Republic's growing dissatisfaction of the Jedi Order.

I have not been a faithful watcher, but I hope to eventually get through it all. If they do not give anything more than bonus content for now, I hope that Disney/LFL will at least provide a second feature film to wrap things up. Sure, the first CW movie wasn't so great, but other incomplete shows (e.g. Firefly) can still be tied up surprisingly nicely with a well written movie (e.g. Serenity).

It will probably air as a one off special someday. (With little promotion.) And if the Holiday Special gets a preservation...    ;)

I hope someone does something like that for The 4400 one day. :-(

The recent announcement has spurred me to give more attention to this series.  I am slowly working my way through the episodes.  I also gave the ol' traditionally animated microseries a gander (finally).  I have to say that while the first half was kinda weird, with every other minute filled with dramatic pauses and poses, the second half was really quite good!  I wish the now cancelled series would have been able to transfer the same story points (up to the capture of Palpatine) to CGI.  I know 2008 series got better as it went, but even these first few episodes are really quite enjoyable.  It makes me excited to see more.  But I guess what interests me most about this show is that it increases the value of the PT.  Without TCW, the PT is a disappointing trilogy lacking in both character and action (I remember very clearly before 1999 wanting the PT to be about the Clone Wars).  With TCW, it seems that the PT at least serves as a buttress or complement to the series, which really gives Star Wars fans what they wanted from a pre-OT Star Wars.

Potentially some light at the end of our tunnel?

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/04/05/the-clone-wars-dave-filoni-developing-the-next-star-wars-animated-series?abthid=515e26868da4b8024d000024

I hope this means it will build off of TCW.  I know it will take place at some untouched timeframe, but what does that mean?  The only virgin Star Wars times are what, at least 150 years post ROTJ?  I can't imagine they're going that far out.  More likely in my mind is that it will take place between Eps. 3 an 4.  But who knows.  In any case, with Filoni at the helm, perhaps there will be some closure to the series.

I'm wondering what becomes of the animation studio Lucasfilm set up in Singapore to make the CW series. Would be a shame if the Mouse shutters it the way they did their own animation divisions.

I probably am the only one here who bothered to sign it, but I did my my name on the petition to save the Clone Wars.

http://www.causes.com/actions/1733395-allow-star-wars-the-clone-wars-to-remain-on-the-air-till-the-end

I doubt the Clone Wars protest groups are big enough or cohesive enough to change Disney's/LFL's mind, sadly.

Another article with a little more info on the Filoni interview:

http://screencrush.com/star-wars-the-clone-wars-dave-filoni-future/

And an interview from a couple of the guys from Lucas Animation and how in the dark they have been about TCW ending or how the "bonus material" will be released.  I'm starting to think we may get more than two arcs at least.

I can't really fathom Disney's game plan at this point. Why not just finish the episodes as intended and make them available online?

They're going to fumble this more than when they bought the Muppets, if they keep doing things which only confuse and frustrate the fans. "Bonus material" also has a familiar stench about it...

Speculation: They might be trying to distance themselves from the established franchise as much as possible prior to the release of Episode VII.

Star Wars comes with a lot more in 2013 than it did in 1977. Distancing themselves from everything Star Wars has become might allow them to get back to basics.

Then again, this is probably just wishful thinking.

Alternative guess: Money.

Star Wars has permeated so deeply into our culture, that would a be a tad difficult. ;)

True, but I was referring (vaguely) to the Star Wars we've had since ~1999. I think there's value in Disney trying to distance itself from that Star Wars.

It's hard to go back to basics when your audience comes in expecting a colorful lightsaber show with some mindless Jedi vs. X story.

What did they do wrong with the Muppets outside of indefinitely postponing any future releases of the TV show? I always enjoyed the Disney movies, even if they lacked some of the Jim Henson charm. Also, at least they tried with Muppets Tonight...
