Info: A CALL TO ARMS FOR THE X0 PROJECT! (was: A SPARK OF HOPE...) — Page 2

I for one would like to give a huge THANK YOU to everyone involved with the X0 project and also to those behind the OT.com website! I have been visiting this site for some time now and have worked on my own preservation projects. I've traded with some on this board and also authored some DVD covers for myself and others to use. It has been a fun hobby and as excited as I am to be getting official releases, I also find it a little saddening that a lot of what makes this site so great will be coming to an end!

I will definitely continue browsing OT.com even after the dvd's are released (assuming the site continues). I also hope that we still get to see the final X0 discs released. From what I've seen, these discs look great and I cannot wait to see a final product (assuming that it does get released).

Sincerely,
RickWJ324

It's great to know that those among us still want to see the fruits of the X0 Project. I'd like to personally thank all of you for your support.

Rest assured that the project will continue. We aren't going to keel over and die just because of recent events. I stand by what I said in the Chicago Herald, and I can't wait to see how our superior effort stacks up to LFL's half-hearted attempt.

This is far from over...

We are still cleaning frame by frame.

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

Well....we can say it, but.......

Ha ha! Okay, well... unlike Bush, let's wait until we actually see the finished results before we say it.

Assuming that the new DVD release is better than the X0 capture, I'm sure the skills the X0 team have developed and honed will be perfect for "restoring" the new DVD to the best possible quality IT can be as well. I'm looking forward to everything now - even more so now that the new DVDs are on their way.

What I meant was, about how far into the movie are you finished restoring? Or are you doing it in scattered sections?

If thats the case...what percent finished would you say you are?

I'm just curious to know...thats all.

XO PROJECT: The OOT is coming here?

DARTH FORUM: That is correct, Commander. And OT.com is most displeased with your apparent lack of progress.

XO PROJECT: We shall double our efforts!

(apologies to the hard-working XO team)

lol. We'll be more forgiving of a delay than the Emperor would be, at least. No horrific deaths involved.

Before the official announcement I had often thought that the X0 would be the best possible version of the movies it would be possible to attain. I started out with a TR47 set, then ocp's work, now I'm getting the Editdroids--comparing them all is interesting. Once the official release comes, assuming it's any good, I'll probably give up my comparison game and just watch that, but I want to see how the X0 measures up to it. There's always going to be something preferable about one version over another.

But I have to wonder, though: with all this work going into making these projects, doesn't it make it difficult to just sit back and watch them as movies, and not think about technical considerations or pondering changes? If I just relax I can almost watch the official '04 release and not get upset with it (key word being *almost*, of course). Hell I had a great time watching with my buddies in college when it first came out. Someone on theforce.net was saying that you could use the THX optimiser on the discs to calibrate your tv settings properly, and having done that I found that some of the colour issues on the '04s became less bad (Vader's lightsaber went from nasty magenta to its proper red in most shots, and the Tantive's walls were more white and less blue, among other things). Still, you shouldn't really have to mess with your tv to make something watchable, and it doesn't change the sound mix on ANH being complete crap. The X0 will therefore always be a far better viewing experience since it is going for a proper colour scheme throughout.

So keep up the great work, you guys! Do you know what sound mix/mixes you will be using, perchance?

I try to do it in continuity, but some scenes require more work than others, and which scene I do depends on how much time I have in the immediate future. As such, it's very difficult to say. Many of the Tatooine scenes are real bitches, especially in regards to identifying and removing video noise and specks from the background. Space shots are generally easier, because there's much more contrast between the video and the glitches (although stars tend to confuse, since they drop in and out of sight every few frames.) It takes a lot of back-&-forth to see these things. I'll have to poke Zion in the butt to show my old "6 seconds" video, showing how long it takes to correct a 6-second segment. If I recall correctly, it took over 15 minutes. As such, it's tedious to watch, but it really gives you an idea of why this process takes so long.

Wow....for a 123 minute movie......15 minutes for every 6 seconds works out to over 300 hours of work........that's amazing....

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

Well, again, not every scene requires this much work. Sometimes I can go for several frames with no errors, all the way to multiple errors across adjacent frames. It really depends.

Thanks for filling me in.

I do believe I saw that little video of yours.

I was just curious as to how much was completed thus far....and I guess now I have some sort of idea.

Thanks again.
