9 years ago Lucasfilm announced the GOUT on DVD

Let's celebrate one of the most insidious marketing slogans:

"The individual DVDs will be taken off the market on Dec. 31..."

Rogue One is redundant. Just play the first mission of DARK FORCES.
Being surrounded by yes men: the hallmark of a corrupt leader.
‘The best visual effects in the world will not compensate for a story told badly.’ - V.E.S.
‘Star Wars is a buffet, enjoy the stuff you want, and leave the rest.’ - SilverWook

That was a cruel act on their part when they just used the laserdisc masters, just as a half-assed way of stopping bootlegs. That's no way to treat fans, by pouring salt into wounds.

You should say that to the people behind the GOUT. If they just made the films anamorphic in the first place, 99% of the complaints would not exist. It also doesn't matter that I'm emo, you just do not insult your customers; that's just good business practice.

You're a real peach to be around, aren't you?

Anyways, I'll commemorate the GOUT: it tided me over for a few years, and without it Harmy's restorations wouldn't be possible. So cheers to those weird, semi-rare, non-anamorphic, low-res, occasionally streaky DVDs.

Yay for the GOUT! While fairly useless in its own right, it provided some unique raw materials for fan preservations:

- A frame reference that fans could agree on for all of their audio and video projects so that things could work together better.  Imagine if Harmy's DeEd used the DC for video, but hairy_hen decided to sync his audio to the JSC, etc.

- The only home video release of the 1977 Star Wars crawl/flyover (making the choice of 93 audio more ridiculous).

- Lots of language and subtitle options (in various unique global releases) in an easily rippable format.  Without this, our preservations wouldn't have the global accessibility they currently enjoy.

And finally, it provided the final push for some fans (like me) to get off their butts and start doing something to save Star Wars for posterity, because it was finally crystal clear that Lucasfilm wasn't going to do it.

The randomness of this 9th anniversary got me thinking to check what gift would be appropriate.  Apparently it would be willow/wicker, pottery, or leather.

Let the S&M jokes begin...

Come on, there's an obvious joke there.  You're not really trying.

Its worse than 9 years the transfer was done in 1993.

22 years of nothing thanks to LFL a billion dollar empire too poor for even modern dvd transfers, never mind basic blu ray transfers.

S&M Thursdays have a 10th anniversary?

Well, according to Frink's earlier link, 10th anniversaries are aluminum, steel, diamonds, or PVC.

Nope.  But on the plus side, I added both Labyrnth and The Dark Crystal to my queue, as they came up as related titles.
