I’m leaving town that day… I honestly have never been this upset in my life.

Although I wish that had been on our collective radar a heck of a lot sooner, that this is happening at all has to be significant. This isn’t some theater back east that’s doing a free screening before closing it’s doors forever, this is the Motion Picture Academy! Disney and Lucasfilm must know about it.

And any OT members in Southern California, if there ever was a time to have a meet up, it’s now!

Is it correct to call this the GOUT? I thought that term referred specifically to those crappy DVDs George included in one of the boxed set releases. Do they just mean a 70mm print of the unaltered version?

As far as I know, this was just announced yesterday.

The streaming event Thursday night should be incredible - especially with Marcia in attendance. I can’t wait to see it!!

Marcia… Marcia formerly Lucas ? Seriously, one of the best editors of her time is going to attend the double feature ? That’s awesome. And in 70mm glory !

(yeah there also is R1 scheduled but even if I don’t like it, its cinematography is among the best of the Saga)

(and I love Giacchino’s score)

Have fun Lucky ones !

It will be streamed live!

Over the last 40 years, technology has advanced by leaps and bounds. But the impetus to create and inspire remains the same. This event will contrast the analog technologies developed for the first STAR WARS released in 1977 with the all-digital toolsets used to create ROGUE ONE released in 2016.

Key contributors from both STAR WARS and ROGUE ONE will share the journey of creating the impossible with their breakthrough visual effects. Our list of stellar participants includes: John Dykstra, Dennis Muren, John Knoll, Ben Burtt, Marcia Lucas, Bill George, Harrison Ellenshaw, Bruce Nicholson, Richard Edlund and Rachel Rose. Hosted by Kiri Hart, co-producer of ROGUE ONE, this event promises to be both inspiring and insightful.

So this is the original version, right?

I wonder how faded the 70mm print is and just when it was struck.

Yep.

And that’s one of the many questions right now…

If this the original theatrical, colour me speechless! Anyone here able to report back and confirm?

I don’t think 70mm prints were made of the SE, so it has to be the original, right?

This is awesome! Wish I lived out west right about now…

I’ve seen a video on youtube of a projection booth in a Wash DC theater running ROTJ around 1997, so that muddies the waters a bit.

The description of the video says 1996, which is just barely pre-SE, so it could have been a 1983 70mm Jedi print, but point taken.

Would there have been any screenings in 1996 though? I would think Lucasfilm would have wanted a moratorium ahead of the SE releases.

From what I’ve been able to find out, there was never a 70mm print for any of the 97 SE’s. They all had the DTS tracks and were 35mm only.

I tend to agree. Didn’t James Cameron have to bug Fox just to strike a couple 70mm prints of Titanic, or pay for them himself?

That’s exactly what the research I did suggested. Titanic was really one of the last ones.

I’m very interested to see what this is and, potentially, what this means…

It’s not the GOUT though. GOUT refers just to the 2006 Bonus DVDs that were sourced from the '93 Laserdiscs.

Maybe theyre 70mm blowups of the DVD 😛

Warner Brothers actually struck at least one 70mm print each of Kong: Skull Island, Wonder Woman and Ready Player One, and those movies were only finished at 2k.

What exactly is an “Academy Print” anyway?

I’d guess a print owned by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

That or it’s in Academy ratio, which would mean a pan and scan print since SW was filmed anamorphic. ;P
