4k77 - reel by reel color grading (Released)

While I’m working on the shot by shot correction for 4k77, Stotchy and I decided to adjust the colors of each of the reels of 4k77 to our personal preferences, or perhaps I should say to what we feel is an authentic look of the film. So, I created some LUTs and Stotchy is rendering them with his powerhouse setup. We’re halfway through the film, so we expect this to be finished in about a week or so. Here are a few screencaps for the first three reels as a first sample:

I will post some comparisons as soon as I have the rendered file. These screencaps were kindly provided by Stotchy. 😃

It’s also the intention to apply these LUTs to the DNR version when Williarob releases this in the near future.

Also as it will inevitably come up as a question - yes there is the green tint in the darker scenes of the film much like in the main 4k77 release. 😃

It’s a great idea to issue a LUT for each reel. I can’t wait to get my hands on them. 😄

So when this is complete, is it going to look completely different from Dre’s grade of 4K77 and the blu-ray or pretty much the same? Just curious… 😃

It’s a reel by reel color correction. So it’s effectively 6 color corrections for the whole film. It will be a big improvement over the existing 4k77 colors but not as accurate and fine tuned as a shot by shot.

The reel by reel correction is almost finished. I’m sending Stotchy two LUTs with final updates today. It’s looking pretty sweet, if I say so myself. Big thanks to Stotchy for all his hard work rendering the reels, and to Williarob for providing us with such a great source to work with! 😃

how would you feel about correcting the few shots that have been (expertly) replaced with other sources, to better match color? I can think of the reel change at the trash compactor scene as an example. Maybe Williarob could provide a complete source list so we know where they all are.

That looks fantastic.

Just an FYI Dre, because I’m looking at it. I see the colors change in the trash compactor scene from 1:18:59 to 1:19:02. I remember one other noticeable color change, but I’ll have to search for it again.

Maybe also a few frames around 38:44.

That could be due to the reel change in the middle of that scene.
