Lucasfilm could easily nullify our work by releasing their own version.

Indeed, that was exactly what happened with the release of the GOUT, which many people feel was released specifically to curtail the underground market of Star Wars Laserdisc rips. Whether that was the intent or not, it effectively succeeded in that goal.

This situation is a little different because the GOUT required next to no investment, and its shoddy treatment as bonus material could still pass muster with the Original Vision™ crowd.

So, what exactly is the story on the crawl used in 4K77? I just looked at it closely and it doesn’t look quite right - kind of like it was keyed out of one source and recomposited over a starfield from a different source. And the fade-out seems weird too.

I don’t mean to criticize, I’m sure it was the best available, I’m just curious.

My understanding is that it’s an upscale of the SSE crawl. Willarob gave me some pointers on restoring the 81 crawl when he gave me the raw scan of it, here’s a copy/paste (hopefully I’m not out of line sharing this here, if so I’ll delete it):

A good way to restore the stars (at least during the crawl):

  1. Add the movie to your composition in After Effects
  2. Use the Lumetri Scopes or Levels/histogram to adjust the contrast so that the black of space is almost black and the white of the flashes during the flyover is almost white.
  3. Duplicate the layer and then hide the bottom layer for now.
  4. On the top layer, use the Keylight Effect to key out the yellow of the crawl and uncheck “Premultiply Result”. The yellow text should vanish completely.
  5. Also on the top layer, use the Threshold Effect and move the slider to the left until the stars reach your desired brightness.
  6. Unhide the bottom layer - you should have nice bright stars and be able to see the crawl again.

This works for the pan down too, but once the planets come into view you would have to start masking/rotoscoping out the planets, ships and laser bolts as they will all be an ugly blown out white color if you don’t…

I assume this is the method used for the crawl in 4K77 as well, but I’m not sure. I haven’t had a chance to work with the 81 crawl yet, so I dunno how this works in practice.

Which version? 1080p or 4K? Did you try it in the default media player or did you also try it in a good one, for example VLC ( http://videolan.org/ )?

VLC is probably one of the worst players to use, it’s bloated, crashes, and uses up a ton of memory.
Stay as far away from it as possible.

Something like media player classic MPC-HC, or HPV player : https://mpv.io/
would work better.

Funny, never had any problems with VLC and I was using it for something like 15 years, I never even read any complaints about it until now. But I noticed MPC-HC is open source, thanks, I’ll check it

VLC doesn’t play nice with 4K video apparently. A lot of us over at the 4K77 forums were surprised by that, too. Not sure if it’s a resolution issue, a bitrate issue, or a codec (h.265 instead of h.264) issue, or some combination of the above.

VLC just released a major update. I don’t have any 4K video to test it with, but I think it was supposed to help with that. Could anyone confirm that?

Demuxing the individual elementary streams and then remuxing to another mkv container fixed it for me. Works great in VLC now.

Luke threw twice…maybe.

I have a pretty beefy computer, and both VLC and MPC-HC still play 4K files weird. MPV on the other hand has no problem.

It doesn’t hurt to offer help, but it always hurts to disregard those that do.

Can someone who has downloaded 4k77 compress it and put the smaller file up somewhere? I wanna see it to compare it to the Blu Ray, Harmy, etc, but don’t wanna download or seed ~40 GB.

for a fair comparison i think you shold use the uncompressed file.

look for the usenet discussion earlier in the thread.
a.b.starwars is a usenet ‘channel’ for want of a better word, it is short for alt.binaries.starwars

Lookup a usenet tutorial and it will all become clear.

Provided that your CPU and GPU are good enough. I am on a 7600k and 1060 3 gig and VLC still struggles with 4k for me. Leawo Blu Ray player will play 4k files smooth, at least on my hardware.

If anyone has a google drive link to the UHD copy, my Spleen login doesn’t work anymore. PM me. Does MEGA still have download limits?

Yes, MEGA still forces 3-6 hours (depending on what you use, I believe) of downtime after every 5 GB for non-premium users. For a three hour wait for the UHD version that’s roughly 30 hours of downtime. MegaDownloader supposedly bypasses this, but I haven’t been able to get it to work.

Yeah. They don’t seem to be putting up too much of a fight against VPNs. You can use their official app, logged in with your non-premium account, and switch your IP every 5 GB, and it will resume download.
