Ditto.

If it makes everyone feel better, these Darth Id posts are consistent with his posts in off-topic.

I'll have you know that I did indeed googol "black lacquer dildo"--EXTENSIVELY--and not a mention of your precious "daleks".

Are you saying you multiplied one black lacquer dildo by 10100?

At least that Manos cover is better than any DVD/Blu cover that any Star Wars film will ever have. This steelbook release is the most pointless release of SW on physical media in a decade. They should of put the originals in to justify this release, but I guess Disney is going to drag us over the coals again just like Lucasfilm before.

He is right. D23? Nothing. It's a safe bet there's no announcement forthcoming.

I've never watched Dr Who and even I know what a Dalek is.

It's the bumpy thing in this NSFW photo.

In fan parlance they are affectionately known as "the round things". Ask any Doctor Who fan and many will become dewy eyed at the thought of their return :-D.

Hope they restore the Theatrical cuts in BD.

Title says it all.

Interview clips from D23 about TFA. But the OT clips used, while definitely not HD (and in fact are quite grainy), are definitely not the SE's from what I could tell from a quick watch.  Interesting...

Yeah, that is interesting. OOT ceremony and hologram. Can't tell anything about the resolution from my phone, but the hologram shot has some clear damage, so it's nothing that's been newly restored (and I doubt they would supply Variety with something like that anyway). Can anyone tell if it's obviously from the GOUT? (seems it's not)

Good catch.  While not something straight from Disney or Lucasfilm, so it isn't as telling, they usually only want approved SE footage used, so I am really not sure where Variety got these clips.  What I will say, while not sharp and pretty grainy, it is obvious it is both non-SE and from an uncleaned film scan (with nicks, scratches, dirt and other damage).

No idea what the story is with this source, but I will say the color timing looks pretty darn good.  Take the falcon cockpit at 1:07, interior at 1:10, and the cleaning/hologram scene at 1:23 seems to get things right in the background that I've complained about with Harmy's...

Well, I just put a comment on that video, go give it a "like" if you want to get our questions some attention.

Looks like variety used clips from trailers, I think documentaries and entertainment news coverage are allowed to use trailer clips without going through the clearance stuff.

That's what I think, too.  I recognize some of the ESB clips from a teaser.

Crap, hadn't considered that... and it would explain the aspect ratio differences between the SW and Empire clips.  But still, it would be nice to hear that straight from them.

Even if they just said out loud that they were happier using something that wasn't SE footage, it'd still help the cause ever so slightly.

Maybe without George, they've stopped caring what versions the media uses.

Variety is to be commended for using trailer clips just to get that truly original feel instead of simply using the blu-Rays, even if they only did it for clearance convenience.

It also - intentionally or not - goes along with the "retro" feel Abrams and company are using in the marketing, revealing the character names in the style of the topps trading cards and what not.

Yeah, I think I recognize that footage as being from the trailers available on the DVD set or the official youtube channel.

After seeing how poor the Reliance samples are closeup, it's a good thing that they won't announce or acknowledge anything about another restoration.

The grain reduction comparison shows how extreme they went. The colors still aren't a good match either. This is for both Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back.

Thanks to the anonymous sources for confirmation.

Like I've said before in this thread and elsewhere, I'm convinced the Reliance 4k job was done as a basis for the 3D conversion. Hence it's the SE again.

Not that I really care, but it would be nice if they could at least get the "official" version of the movie looking right, as that article on savestarwars.com points out.

Mike Verta's comparison seems to indicate they will once again not get it looking right. Even if it corrects the flaws of the Lowry transfer, it apparently introduces new problems of its own. The pendulum swings too far in the other direction.

The only saving grace of this, I suppose, is that the new SE can have its own distinct look and we can still possibly also get a restoration of the OOT looking exactly as it should.

Yeah. Can you imagine how long it would take after a botched OOT release to get then to do it right? At least there would be HD material for the folks here to tear apart, I suppose.
