Why doesn't anyone ever spell "Lucas" as "£u¢a$"? If you're going to mock his name, you may as well go for broke and replace as many letters with symbols of currency as you can.

I'm not mocking Lucas' name, it's just that greedy corporations are GR€€D¥ :D
Anyway, back on topic: do you think LucasFilm/Disney are going to do a proper restoration, even though by now their focus should be on a 4k restoration of all six movies (I guess OT SE and PT)? I know they already screened something they called "4k versions" of the OT, but they were just 2004 upscales of their masters, right? It can't be good enough for them, right...?

Right, what was I thinking! Am I Jar-Jar stupid!? :S
Back on topic: I'm still waiting for Di$ney to unofficially sell "Lucas SE '77" pan 'n' scanned on blu-ray for the new 4k CRT standard!

Frink, I do believe you missed him also saying Luca$$$film.
Also, Mr. Doom, where are you getting this "restore PT in 4K" stuff? In his foolish eagerness to completely distance himself from all things that worked well from the OT, Lucas jumped too early onto recording completely in digital for Episodes II and III, forever trapping them at a maximum resolution of 1080p. The PT will never be a 4K showcase, due to extreme shortsightedness, and Disney is not about to lead with that foot. If Star Wars ever commercially goes 4K, it would pretty much have to be just some form of original trilogy release (be it redone-from-scratch SE, or OOT), not the complete Vader saga.

I said "upgrading", not "restoring" :D
They're probably going to upscale them to 4k, that is.

I don't know if Eps 2 and 3 were technically finished at 1080. They were definitely shot that way (technically 1920 by 817 for the 2.35:1 scope framing), but I think they still did all the cgi and color timing at 2k cinema resolution (2048 by 853 for scope). Small difference, I know, and it certainly doesn't improve the limited resolution of the live-action footage, which would still be stuck at cropped 1080p.
Avatar was shot similarly. 1920 by 1080 hd cameras with the vfx and color finished at true 2k for the scope version. John Knoll said in an interview that ILM delivered some of their shots at 3k just so they would really shine in the 70mm Imax version.
When it comes to the OT SE, only 20% of it, at the most, is actually stuck at 2k detail. Most of the trilogy would still benefit greatly from 4k as it's still photochemical. They say even 35mm negative doesn't "max out" until you hit 12k resolution, although the point at which our eyes can't tell the difference is maybe only slightly higher than 4k unless we're viewing it on an insanely large screen at relatively close distance.
And even if the prequels are stuck at 2k, they can still look quite good. I just saw Avengers 2 last week, a movie that was only finished in 2k, and it looked absolutely amazing projected in 4k.

Strange, I must have read this wrong:

My fault: I said it in a slightly earlier post: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/4K-restoration-on-Star-Wars/post/768823/#TopicPost768823

What can we expect from Luca$$$film? Apparently the Guy is out of the picture, so probably no more "artistic decisions" (if that is what was keeping them from re-releasing the OOT), but why would they make a restoration, anyway? By now, their focus should be on restoring the OT and "upgrading" the PT to 4K, so I doubt they're going to make a proper OOT restoration.

When did we start referring to George as The Guy?
Where were you in '77?
Since I am here :D
Nominating him makes us "non-SE-believers" intolerant and boring to the other fans, the "Man" would make him sound too important. So I decided to use the "Guy".
Why not? Just joking, anyway :D

So, I can't necessarily state my sources other than saying that it is from a reputable source within disney. But, I happen to know the attitude at disney towards all things prequel and special edition is very negative and have heard that restoring the original, unaltered trilogy is a priority on the Star Wars front, though their focus is mainly on TFA, the spinoff films, and rebels at the moment and it is unclear when we will see a release, but that it is going to happen within the next couple of years.
If so, that would be great!

If that's true then maybe after TFA and the new trilogy hype slows down they'll work on it more.

We still don't think 4k versions will officially ever happen. But if you want to see some 4k frames scanned from Return of the Jedi, go here:

The vast majority of people don't currently have 4k moniters, or any way to play back media in that format. You could stream it at 4k, but you would need a lot of bandwidth to do it.
We'll see if we can post a 1-2 second clip in 4k to test it.

We know Lucasfilm is always late to the party when it comes to technology :D (not sure about Disney, though)
Now to stay off-topic, we know 4k televisions' resolution can only be appreciated on a big screen (probably bigger than 30")... now tell me, how are customers supposed to bring them home!? I'm not buying it :\

Well, I have a 4K 58" TV and I brought it home through the front door :D
And as soon as they come down in price a bit, I'm getting a 4K projector for my 135" projection screen (which I also brought home through the front door).
4K monitors are becoming the standard thing to buy for gamers when going for a top-of-the-line gaming system. Pretty soon they'll be the standard for PC gaming.
