As I've said before and I say again: The negatives are not the only available source for a good restoration of the OUT.
Many IP (interpositive), IN (internegative), and theatrical release prints exist. Obviously lower generations are better, but even a good restoration from a theatrical release print would be sufficient for a nice 1080p BD release.

Maybe I'd tone it down if it was Howard The Duck or Police Academy that was being destroyed, but the destruction of the OT is like blowing up Mt. Rushmore. So Lucas deserves it, and much worse things I dare not post on this thread.

Those so-called secondary sources are closer to what was seen in theaters in '77/80/83 than the negative since they have the "baked-in" damage due to handling that the negative does not necessarily have. You do realize that there have been some credible sources that have refuted the claim that the negative was destroyed. Vidiot said that the original negatives are still intact (although not in great shape), as well as copies of the negatives that are all fine according to him. Robert A Harris, a pro in the industry, has also expressed little concern over the state of the elements. Sorry for my lack of sources but I also recall reading an interview a while back where he said he knew that there were plenty of pristine sources for a proper release. Also, you really need to stop treating it like the OT are lost films. They may not be widely available in high quality, but the films are not lost. The Library of Congress has two prints of each film, a lot of prints are in the hands of collectors, and I'm sure that Lucasfilm possesses plenty of OOT sources in their archives. Empire of Dreams was allowed to use a lot of that for the documentary, including the Holiday Special, although that footage was not included in the final cut. If Lucas didn't destroy the holiday special, he didn't destroy the OOT. I know that he refused to release it but he didn't ritualistically burn all prints in a bonfire at Skywalker Ranch as part of a cult initiation.
Anyway, feel free to go back to comparing the SE to rape and George Lucas to Mao Tse-Tung or Hitler or whatever.

I never wore SW pajamas, and I never had a bed-wetting problem. The slide into pessimisn really began in 2004 when I learned of the DVD changes , and realizing the the original film elements were being slowly destroyed, mainly by coming to this site.
