4K restoration on Star Wars — Page 58

It won't cost them much to do it right either. That should make the accountants happy. ;)

Where were you in '77?

There are several huge reasons why there will never be a better time than now to restore the unaltereds and get them out there, but the biggest reason imo is so they can heal the division in the fandom as lovelikewinter said. They need to finally put this matter to rest so they can move the **** on with the franchise.

Also, I just don't see a more appropriate time to release it after Episode VII. This isn't Tron: Legacy where they didn't want people to be reminded of the original movie. This is Star Wars we're talking about here, the most successful franchise of all time. Putting out the unaltereds on blu-ray so everyone can spin them up during the wait for Ep7 is a no-brainer.

Could they continue keeping it in their back pocket for later? I guess, but it would be a little awkward cross-promoting with the spin-offs and sequels.

Even from a more general standpoint I don't see the point of waiting. Physical media will only continue to lose its foothold, although I'll admit Star Wars is something people will probably always want a physical copy of. My nightmare scenario is Disney deciding to finally release a restored OOT ... but only as a download.

News of a 4k blu-ray format hitting the market by the end of next year has quelled those fears for now. It's a sign that physical media is sticking around for at least a little longer. I'm not gonna get my hopes quite this high up, but how epic it would be if Disney decided to put out this 4k restoration on 4k blu-ray day-and-date with a regular blu-ray.

As I've said before, Disney's strategy has been a subtle apologizing for the Prequels and Lucas' more controversial decisions.  Look as Oscar Isaac's interviews.  No way he would have been allowed to even think those things before.  He would have been on his way to join David Prowse in exile.

Lucas doesn't care anymore.  He has a new wife and child.  He's spending a ton of time in Chicago, away from everything. There is no need to pander to him anymore.  The only ones to suffer are the PT/SE Lucas is god fanboys, and I'm not even sure they are really people so screw 'em.  We can get the new kids to have a proper view of Star Wars.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

Physical media will always be around. There will always be a market for it.

Digital d/l and physical are not an either/or proposition.

That's like saying Laserdiscs will always be around.  While technically true, they've been relegated to the domain of the collector alone.

That's not really the same analogy. Anyone who argues that physical will disappear is basically saying the same thing as "writing will not exist one day because everyone knows how to type."

But then again everything is physical. Even if it is digital information it is still stored physically somewhere.

Stored by a company that will be happy to distribute it to you at a crappy bitrate, and tell you that your copy has expired when they get bought out by someone else.

Oral traditions barely exist, because most people know how to read.

I came across a cleaned up SW trailer from RLM somewhere on Youtube and forgot to post it here. Is it possible they only worked on trailers and bonus material like that instead of the actual films?

RMW (Reliance Media Works) not RLM (Red Letter Media).

Reliance in my head, RLM in my fingers. Sorry!

Still, my question stands. I saw they restored a trailer. Curious if there's any proof they scanned the original films or only worked on trailers and bonus material.

I for one will never purchase any film unless I get a physical copy. I still use Netflix and other streaming services, but I will never pay for an individual film if I'm only getting it digitally. I do still love it when blu rays come with digital copies though.

I hate to be Ric again but even if you download the digital content on your hard disk, you get a physical copy. The information is stored physically on your disk.

To pedantry… and beyond!

I mean, seriously… we know that (if it wasn't true, the hard disk wouldn't work, it's not supernatural). We're using common parlance, where “physical media” refers to films, tapes and discs, whilst “digital media” refers to files. You will find this phraseology fairly consistent across the internet.

“That’s impossible, even for a computer!”

“You don't do ‘Star Wars’ in Dobly.”

No, it isn't, and no, it isn't.

I know the guy whose job it is to fix the internet. He's taller than you.

My hard disk is supernatural.  I paid extra for it.

I don't like those because I can't stand cleaning out the ectoplasm from my USB port.

That's “ghost media” anyway.
