4K restoration on Star Wars — Page 33

Well, if there's truth to that rumor, it would seem they are approaching the restoration with care and using the o-neg for it.

Is comicbook.com even reliable?

And if so, is the release going to be done right?

Not sure if it's reliable or not, but from my understanding it isn't a place that would intentionally make up lies, but they might also be claiming it's a rumor just because some friends told them that they think it makes sense for Disney to release the OT. Even if this is a rumor, it's still good because it's keeping the OUT demand in the public eye. As for whether or not it's done right, I'm sure what you exactly you mean. If you mean a disappointing transfer or restoration, well I guess that's always a possibility. But if you're talking about them somehow forgetting to take out an SE change, I don't think that's going to be a problem. Even if they do leave an SE change in it will probably be something small like not re-adding the matte painting rebels at the end when Han and Luke get their medals. If that's the extent of the left in changes then we could literally have a perfect fan reconstruction out within weeks, but I honestly don't think that'll happen. They don't want to advertise something as "the original unaltered films!" and then have someone point out, "Hey, there's still Special Edition sh#t in these versions."

Note one commenter says Best Buy released an OT DVD set last year. What the heck?

I saw that too, he must not be interested in the issue and just saw the OT (SE form) box set and assumed it was the unaltered versions. A lot of people who don't care don't realize just how unavailable the original versions are.

Well, there have been a lot of rumors about this over the summer, so maybe there's something to it. Plus the whole business with the 4k thing, I don't know though... I never want to get my hopes up unless a Lucasfilm official comes right out and says that it's being released

If something is up, they may save an actual public announcement until Celebration next year.

I bet you're excited to finally see yourself back in the cantina, but in HD ;)

I was thinking about Celebration as well, and I think this rumor seems more promising than Bleeding Cool's because they aren't saying that the prequels will be retconned or anything like that. Who knows, I guess we'll just have to wait and see, but hopefully this rumor will get more attention and comicbook.com will elaborate on it

This Reddit thread is so fucking depressing. Why, you ask?

  1. The number of people convinced that the OUT was completely destroyed.

  2. The number of people who want some Frankenstein'sMonster-esque mishmash of OUT and SE.

  3. "Weren't the originals released on DVD in 2006?"... 'nuff said.

  4. The (surprising) number of people who think selling an LD->BD rip would be acceptable.

  5. The presence of the token "People still buy physical media???!" guy.

And, to a lesser extent...

  6. The obsession over the ownership of the distribution rights.

I don't expect everyone to be like us, but I just don't understand these people.

I'm going to bed. -_-

#2 is the worst. They seem to see the release of the OOT as a threat to the SEs.

Ugh, there was an article about the distribution rights on badass digest that made my blood boil. The author thought Fox literally owned the actual movies for some reason. I left a comment correcting him and he posted back several times saying I was wrong and that Fox still owned them and always would. I had to actually post a link to a '98 article saying that Lucas finally acquired rights to the original Star Wars film, but I got no response to that of course -_-

I personally don't find the Reddit depressing because they all pretty much have one thing in common (no matter how distorted their facts are) they want to see the OUT released, and that's what will encourage Disney to release the OUT, demand, regardless of the peoples' confusion :)

 1. The smoke and mirrors we got from Lucasfilm the past 17 years has done it's job far too well.

2. George, is that you, and your socks?

3. 2006? Where the heck are they getting that from?

4. They have probably never even watched a Laserdisc on modern display, if they even know what an LD is. ;)

5. The people I know who stream pretty much everything complain bitterly about the fees they pay for going over their limit for the month. ;)

6. Some latent fear a loophole exists that will go around George's wishes?

Sleep well, and don't worry about clueless people on the internet.

Mr. Lucas said that to release the original versions of these films on Blu-ray was “kind of an oxymoron because the quality of the original is not very good.”

“You have to go through and do a whole restoration on it, and you have to do that digitally,” he added. “It’s a very, very expensive process to do it. So when we did the transfer to digital, we only transferred really the upgraded version.”

Unfortunately, the recent releases get priority over what we call the classic versions of things.”

I saw Star Wars in 1977. Many, many, many times. For 3 years it was just Star Wars...period. I saw it in good theaters, cheap theaters and drive-ins with those clunky metal speakers you hang on your window. The screen and sound quality never subtracted from the excitement. I can watch the original cut right now, over 30 years later, on some beat up VHS tape and enjoy it. It's the story that makes this movie. Nothing? else.

Coppola says the Godfather negative was destroyed.........but in reality it was not.......it was just in very poor shape.

Lucasfilm is using the same terminology.

Haha, sure ;) but anyone who calls themselves a badass rub me the wrong way from the start. It's like when people call themselves "quirky"; it's a compliment to call someone else quirky, but if you call yourself quirky it just makes you look like a hipster or something, I guess it's kind of the same with Badass

On the bright side, it seems like there's a lot less of those "George's Vision" cultists still left out there, the guys still clinging to the image of GL as some kind of Kubricky perfectionist, with the special edition as the ultimate expression of that integrity. They were always the worst.

They probably gave up when episodes 7-9 were announced. "George's Vision" was that ROTJ is the end.

That was the article that gave me hope for Lucas to release the originals. That sounds weird since he basically said he'd never do it, but he didn't once mention his "true vision" or anything about which version he liked better. He even called the OUT the classic versions! I swore that this was his way of making us all buy the blu rays twice, but who knows. Hopefully these rumors are true, but I don't want my hopes to get too high, only to torn away from me once again.

I suspect that the rumors are true, especially with this 4K restoration.  It's too bad that it appears there won't be time for a theatrical re-release of the OUT before episode 7.  That would be so much fun, leading into the new trilogy.

Also makes me wonder what will happen to the other SE's if this is true.  Are they stuck in their current quality or would Disney go through the trouble of recreating it using their new scans?  Not that I really care.  I'd like to just have the OUT and '97 versions.

Author

If they followed the release pattern of the SE's in 1997, there could be plenty of time.
