This is really funny.

That is seriously what I did with the 2011SE’s. You glue the shiny sides together so it’s really clear what’s on the disks. Star Wars and Empire on the sides, Jedi in the middle, a little offcenter so that you can see some of its cover too. They’re currently hanging inside the wall cavity of my youngest child’s bedroom closet.

Love it.
But be careful… Some may not think that’s valid.
I got heavily berated for announcing that I only own the paper receipt from my purchase of the BD boxset. “THAT’S NOT GOOD ENOUGH! HE SHOULD BE BANNED!” even though it proves, irrevocably, that I paid my hard earned cash for the set (you can even trace it to my bank account). Simply possessing the set says nothing. Ya coulda’ stole it, bought it second hand, ect.

Thanks for the idea – I’ll glue the receipt to the discs.

Now we’re talkin’.

What I find kind of funny is that this Skywalker Saga set is going to contain an additional disc per movie and yet that additional disc will not contain the unaltered versions.

That’s one less excuse Disney has to include it in the future. If the bean counters go “oh, pressing an additional disc per film would cost too much,” we can point to this set and say “you pressed an additional disc per film before just so you could include extras a lot of fans would consider of lower importance than a restored unaltered version.”

We don’t actually know what the breakdown on the extra discs are, or what’s going to be on them. Granted, you’re PROBABLY correct, but we don’t know what those extra discs even are yet. It’s all hypothetical at this point.

Discs wasted carrying more lame crap to add to the previous set’s ANATOMY OF A DEWBACK and the STAR WARS spoofs?

I’m not expecting much from this set. I’m not a fan of the prequels, sequels, spin-offs and despise the SE trilogy. If the unaltered versions are not present, then there’s perhaps very little to nothing here for me.

All speculation of course, the 2004 & 2011 sets were disappointing (to me) and this may be more of the same.

I by no means wanna dissuade anyone who has any inkling of getting this set to not do it. If Broom Kid’s wish of isolated scores is granted, good for him and those who want that. I’m not gonna judge him or anyone else on their own choice to buy the set.

However if there are others like myself who feel the lack of the OUT is an automatic no sale that’s ok too. I made the same decision in 2011, 2013, 2015 and this year. Admittedly I’ve almost went through with getting the Complete set just for the extras but even that wasn’t enough of a push. When it’s extras that accommodate films that are modern reinterpretations of their theatrical versions it puts a bad taste in my mouth.

HD or not, history is rewritten and unless the OUT is restored I frankly have no desire to buy these films again. But that’s just me. People are buy the sets regardless of what’s in it either way so it really doesn’t matter how I feel about it.

I’m glad JJ shed some light on things and let us know to not be expecting the unaltered versions on this 4K release, but I sure wish someone would elaborate on the " for reasons he just doesn’t understand, it isn’t possible."

How can that be anything other than Lucas? Is it some legality involved in the sale of Lucasfilm? Some sort of agreement to honor his wishes? They aren’t oblivious to the situation. Just tell us like it is and be done with it.

^ Didn’t JJ just confirm that there’s no OUT coming out?

JJ’s not really in a position to confirm what the home video department is or isn’t doing. He said he asked about it once (he never said when, could have been when he first got hired back in 2013/2014, and he doesn’t seem to have ever asked again) and he didn’t understand why the answer was “no.”

That doesn’t confirm anything other than he doesn’t get why Disney hasn’t released the OT, which is essentially no different than anyone else who wants these versions made available. Just because he worked there doesn’t mean he speaks for what’s happening currently.

Again: It’s pretty likely the original versions aren’t going to be on this set, but Abrams didn’t confirm anything other than that he asked about it at some point between 2013 and now and didn’t understand why the answer was no.

I wonder when there will be an official announcement and description of the 4k set then.

I got the idea that JJ’s statement was calculated on their part. Trying to let us know in advance.

I’d imagine probably around late January/early February? Just a guess, though.

I don’t think JJ’s statement was anything other than JJ trying to be interesting but unsubstantial during a press tour. Which JJ is very good at being.

He’s not a Lucasfilm spokesman or anything. He’s not even an employee, really. Keep in mind that he had a chance to sign his production company up under Disney while he was making Rise of Skywalker and chose instead to sign with WB. Looking at that one interview as confirmation of what’s coming on this set seems, to be all Treebeard about it, a little hasty.

It’s really, really LIKELY that the original versions won’t be on the set. But it’s just as possible Abrams doesn’t know what’s on this set (or at the time of the interview, that there even WAS a set coming) one way or the other. So we’re basically back to just waiting to see what these 27 (or 18) discs contain.

I have sort of made my peace with the SE, and while I would love to get an official OOT release, to me the SE still represents 95% of the movies I love at a quality, that fan restorations just can’t compete with, especially now that the color issues of the 2011 restoration have been resolved.

At this point and as Dr.Dre said peace must be made about the subject not anger.

We can still question but not confront agressively the subject there really is little point.

Let’s hope at best for material we have never seen or heard before for the OT atleast as It’s the only trilogy I really Like and Rogue One. That is my kind of hopes on it.

Well he said he “doesn’t understand” not that he “has no idea why”. So we can infer he actually knows why but won’t say.

Just because there’s little hope doesn’t take away the point AT ALL.
I don’t think you understand the reasons behind our stance here.

I believe he’s saying there’s little point in “aggressively confronting the subject,” not that there’s no point in wanting the original versions.

Like, let’s just take it as read that anyone who contributes posts to the ongoing conversation at a place called “originaltrilogy.com” is someone who wants the original versions made commercially available and purchasable by Disney/Lucasfilm.

If we do that, if we start from the assumption that everyone here wants the original versions to be made available, then you’d think the instances of people getting aggressively confrontational when talking about it should decrease, right? Because it’s recognized at that point there’s common ground we’re all standing on.

Hopefully I didn’t misunderstand the request there, but that’s how I read it. Not that people should give up on wanting things that are perfectly reasonable to want. But I’m reading Ronster’s post as saying people will and should question why we don’t have what we want yet, but they should also maybe not be so angry/aggressive when trying to discuss it with other likeminded people.

Very interesting! Charles Bunnag, one of the colorists of the new 4K HDR Disney+ version of the Original Trilogy, as well as “The Mandalorian,” has spoken regarding the negative claims that the Disney+ HDR is “fake.” There’s even an interesting comment from Marc Wielage (colorist of the 2004 versions). https://mixinglight.com/color-tutorial/is-the-disney-series-the-mandalorian-fake-hdr/

The podcast in the link there is very interesting, I recommend everyone who’s interested in HDR give it a listen.

Yeah, it’s a great one. I loved it too. I’m actually a subscriber to MixingLight, because their insights are incredibly helpful with my work. They had another podcast a couple of years ago talking with the colorist of the 2004 SE, and in that podcast the colorist actually talks about it being a myth that Lucasfilm doesn’t have the theatrical OT negatives or prints anymore, because he actually used them in his restoration. I went back and tried to find it, and the listing for that podcast is still there but the link is broken. I’ll reach out to them and see if they can fix it. It’s a great listen.

If anyone was interested in this interview I referenced earlier with the colorist of the 2004 SE, it’s back online now. It’s very interesting to view restoration, in general, from his perspective. The whole podcast is great, but about 33:27 is when he starts to talk about Star Wars. https://mixinglight.com/color-tutorial/color-restoration-hollywood-interview-marc-wielage/

That’s dandy, but it’s also not happening here.
The only time anyone seems to get upset is when someone doesn’t understand the real reasons the OT should be available.
This misunderstanding of our stance has come up often lately from many users.
This isn’t about wanting the version we prefer as much as it’s about the wrongs of re-writing history.

It’s happened here. It happens here. There’s no reason to say it doesn’t. I’m not arguing with you, and I’m not upset - I just thought it looked like you misunderstood what he was actually saying in your eagerness to thump the podium a little more, and tried to clarify (which he agreed was the correct read).

“Maybe don’t be so angry/aggressive” isn’t a bad suggestion, is it?
