4K restoration on Star Wars — Page 235

I hope they scan it at 6K/8K.

8K TV’s will be on the way in few years.

Kodak states that a 6K scan is necessary to capture all the details on a 35mm film.

Depends if you’re talking camera negative, interpositive, internegative, or release prints. Each one is a step down generationally and each one will have less detail to be captured than the last.

So in theory, camera negative is the way to go, as it has the most detail. But then you have no color timing information - you’ll have to go the interpositive or internegative from which the release prints were struck for that, and boom, you’ve lost two-three generations of detail. Or you could scan the o-neg and match the color grading to a reference print (interpositive or release print), but that still opens the door to revisionist color timing.

No source is revisionist color timing proof. Maybe a greater chance of accidental mistiming from the o-neg, but there’s already so much variation in different types of prints that were shown, and I frankly don’t care if Leia’s blush is 1/8 shade too red.

The separation masters (if they exist) would be the final word in determining the color grading, since each channel is captured in black and white. It’s also a single generation removed from the Negative, making a combination of separation masters for color and original negative for detail the absolute highest quality possible for a restoration.

What a grand and intoxicating innocence. How could you be so naive? There is no escape. Come, lay down your weapons. It is not too late for my mercy.

I think a lot of the 35mm preservations here tend to over-correct the grain thing, though. I don’t necessarily want a blu-ray to recreate the experience of watching a print in a theater; I think home video ought to be mastered for, y’know, the home, and on home systems excessive grain tends to look like noise. The more recent of the Goodfellas transfers strikes a good balance, I think. It’s got enough grain to be able to tell instantly that it was sourced from film without hitting you over the head with it.

I just got the Warner Archive Superman The Movie: Extended TV Cut and it has a better color timing than the original blu-ray release. They found an interpositive in the archive and were able to do a remaster. Now all they need to do is find and release the original 2 hour cut of Superman IV.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

I’ve had this thought for a while now. They need to re-do/update the CGI in the Star Wars special editions! They need it done badly! Here’s another thought if you take out the extended bullcrap of Luke, Obi-Wan, C-3PO and R2-D2 riding into the Mos Eisley Spaceport and also take out the Jabba scene in the hangar the special edition of A New Hope isn’t all that bad even though I still hate that fat-ass Jurassic Park dinosaur that pokes his big ass right in front of the camera as the Stormtroopers goes over to interrogate the gang about the droids.

They own a lot of franchises. I hope Fantastic Four goes back to Marvel, but the X-men and MCU stay separate. I wouldn’t mind if they changed Tomorrowland in Disney World to Futurama though. More Bender is always good.

Now can we get the Fox fanfare and the Lucasfilm logo on the next blu ray set?

That’s all you’re hoping for SW wise?

Depends on if 20th C. Fox would be part of the deal.

20th Century Fox is the central part of the deal, last I read, as 21st Century Fox wanted to focus on News and Sport.

The Chances are they will release them who knows it is probably already done in 4k and good colour correction and will maybe released around the time of Solo cause it releases on the 41st anniversary of Star Wars first releasing so if a theatrical rerelease is on same day as solo I think more people would go see the theatrical rerelease than solo and that would kick butt.

“Realistically, what’s keeping Disney from releasing the OOT? Costs? Low interest? But I’d argue that, since we know they’re already scanning every negative, even deleted scenes (see Rogue One), they may as well have scanned all of the original trilogy at this point, anyway. And even if they don’t find printing new discs worth the costs, they could release it as a digital download: granted, it’s not the same, but it’s a viable solution that would cost them virtually nothing.
So, I don’t think these are the problems. I think they just don’t want to release it at this point, probably because they want to focus on marketing the new movies”.

good thinking dude I agree in all of that but if fox deal works out then the unaltered cut could be on the way very fucking quickly

Careful, saying stuff like that out in the open about a “new” membet might get you a ban from the Thought Police around here these days.

(Also, I’m not sure if it’s Jedi Master Skywalker, greenlanternslight, or both, but at least one of them is definitely JMOW.)

…How does that even happen with swipe typing on a phone? Why does my phone think that’s a word?

Leaving it for posterity.
