Marvel has a certain level of autonomy though. They kept up 3D disc releases in the U.S. when Disney was releasing their own 3D titles in Europe only.

Oh look, Disneys very first 4K Blu-ray will be Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2

I jumped over to The Digital Bits after seeing this just now only to find that Bill Hunt had posted the announcement from James Gunn in the middle of the night.

Curious that this comes ahead of any announcement from Disney on their plans for the format, although it probably makes more sense to start things off on a more personal and enthusiastic note from an actual director.

Vol 2 will probably be a day one buy since I can finally future-proof a Disney release. I’d much rather pay a few extra bucks for a 4k disc I can’t watch yet than pay for an overpriced combo pack with a dvd I’ll never watch at all and a blu-ray that’s stuck at 1080p and sdr.

Somehow this managed to be the first theatrical run of an MCU movie since Incredible Hulk to completely pass me by.

It’s a 2K DI Upscale though.

Bill Hunt can get bent.

Eh? Did Mr. Hunt cut you off in the parking lot at Best Buy? He happens to be one of the people with a industry soapbox who’s at least talked about the lack of the OOT in recent years.

His site is clickbait and I don’t know why he still gets held in such unneeded high regard.

Looks like the new Pirates of the Caribbean is getting a 4K release as well.

So Disney is defiantly jumping on the 4k bandwagon. Which means a 4k of Star Wars is likely to happen in the near future.

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

There will almost definitely be a 4k UHD of The Last Jedi next April.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if Disney puts out TFA and Rogue One on the format later this year.

We’re not getting a UHD of I-VI until 2020 at the earliest, though.

I’m pretty sure R1 will get a re-release like TFA did anyways. It was in July when they announced Collector’s Edition last year.

Just saw this. Gary Kurtz showed the original SW on the big screen last week?

*edit - the event was in London. Interested to know what exactly he screened.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Gary Kurtz owns one of the surviving technicolor prints of Star Wars, and that’s what’s been shown…

I’ll send him a message and see if he knows what it was. I found another guy that was there as well.

Gary Kurtz was the producer. I’m sure he owns the original filmstrips of the movie.

My first thought was that it could even be Legacy. Mike has been in contact with members of the original crew, so I could see how that could happen.

I thought if even a second of Legacy got out Disney would smite him.

God I hate the Special Edtions even more with each passing day. Especially when I have to see kids get introduced to Star Wars via them.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

Not really. I got a reply back from one guy, who simply said: "The picture and sound quality was of a lower standard that we as a modern cinema audience are used to."
I again asked him if he could specify whether it was an actual 35mm print or something else, but he never replied back.

Yep, I’m excited about seeing this on the big screen. And who would’ve thought a studio would do a re-release for a 40th anniversary? Crazy!

The way that’s worded makes me fear it’s been scrubbed clean of grain. And Spielberg has re-edited the movie so many damn times, I don’t even know what his preferred cut is anymore.

Well, in fairness to him, he really only re-edited it once, which is his preferred “director’s cut”.
Since the theatrical version had to be rushed into theaters to save Columbia from Bankruptcy, Spielberg didn’t have time to shoot everything and so he requested extra money the next year to finish his cut.

As for the third “special edition” cut with the footage from inside the ship, Spielberg was 100% against it from the beginning, but the studio would not give him money for his cut unless he agreed to do it.

Ok. I’m recalling an old newspaper article that said he had recut it several times over the years. As there was a version that aired on ABC that was a hybrid of the theatrical and the SE, it’s easy to get confused as to how many “official” cuts there are.

When the movie finally reached HBO in the early 80’s, it was the SE.

I would have liked to seen the inside of the Mothership scene on the big screen.

You’ve got it a little backwards. The special edition was second, and the director’s cut was third. All three have gotten proper home video releases of course, showing it’s actually not that hard to include multiple versions of a film in one set (there is however a TV cut I believe that’s basically the theatrical and SE put together that’s never gotten a true release).

I’m personally hoping it’s the director’s cut that goes in theaters as it’s sort of the best of both worlds in terms of theatrical vs. SE (though I’ve still never seen the SE - Spielberg said the Mothership’s interior wasn’t meant to be seen and that sounded about right to me).
