4K restoration on Star Wars — Page 125

Not sure what to make of this. Bill Hunt posted another article and does not believe it is happening, based on what Disney’s Director of Restoration had to say at a recent event.

We pretty much already knew that about the original negatives, and I dont think those comments rule out an OOT release anyway as Bill seems to think. Seems like they would just scan all the cut elements separately and make a digital edit? But we really need more info here - what exactly the question was and how this Disney guy responded. He obviously wouldnt be able to give anything away if there was a release planned so he may have just been trying to answer like a politician without lying. Who knows. This is beyond frustrating…

“In the future it will become even easier for old negatives to become lost and be “replaced” by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten.” - George Lucas

Unless there’s a major news leak, we aren’t going to hear anything concrete before Celebration.

That tidbit on Song Of The South is interesting though.

I’m still holding out hope that they’ll at least comment on it during the panel. If all they have to announce is a 4k SE, who will really care? I mean, sure it will be better for fan preservations, but i don’t think the general public will care all that much.

Well, the obvious marketing hook would be “Original 1977 version!” or “The Star Wars you loved as a kid, now you can watch with your kids.” or some such thing.
And if they actually go with that, I will sue. 😉

I would certainly applaud a DVD/Blu Ray release of the Droids and Ewoks cartoons in their original Saturday morning broadcast form. 😃

Or Young Indiana Jones as far as I’m concerned.

My thoughts exactly.

I mean, if they announced that a 4k remastered SE was hitting the new UHD format this year it actually would be kind of a big deal if for no other reason than the fact that Star Wars has never been released on any home video format this early in its lifespan.

But even then, who cares?

The new format is growing faster than anticipated, but it’s still a new format. A 4k UHD of a remastered SE released this year wouldn’t come close to the $80 million the blu-ray made in its first week, much less the '04 dvd which made more than $100 million on its very first day.

Besides, aren’t they teasing some “big surprises” for this panel? Granted, that could mean literally anything. Maybe it has nothing to do with a new release of the films. But I can’t see news of a 4K SE - and nothing more - generating much excitement.

I think Bill makes a few giant leaps to come to his “definitive” conclusion, based on the evidence he provides. And no doubt there’s a gag order out if it actually is happening.

Ok, so I’m all pessimistic and think that if anything they’ll just release a 4K SE and we’ll all be disappointed.

But then what keeps me intrigued is the disappearance of Mike Verta. I just watched a few of his short videos from 2 years ago thinking that this guy put too much work into it (just the one clip of the X-wings leaving Yavin IV alone was astonishing!) for it all to just go away… Not even leaked out. If I put on my tin foil hat, I think he was hired by Disney and given all the things to do it right.

he has disappeared a lot in the past for normal reasons…

I think Verta only met with Disney and Fox execs this month so way too early for results if any from that?

It’s a bummer that he has to deal with so many weirdos and jerks on twitter, but I don’t get this smug indifference about the original version. It’s not a good look for people who (either as fans, or working at LFL, or blogging about their particular Star Wars-related fetishes) are heavily invested in all the other goofy details of that world.

That’s typical of his segment of the fandom. People who love the “saga” (if you can call it that) tend to be the most rude regarding the OOT.

EDIT: Just to be clear I still don’t believe that he knows what he’s talking about.

Gee, it’s almost as if when you’re rude and condescending to peopleabout things THEY like (in this case, the Prequels and the SE) they may be rude and condescending about things YOU like (the OOT).

I can’t see why Pablo would think George has any say in this, but he works for Lucasfilm so what the hell do we know?

Maybe there actually was some kind of agreement not to release the original versions when he sold everything to Disney. He’s one of their biggest shareholders now, so it’s not like Disney can just completely disregard his wishes (but then again they threw out his treatments for the ST). There was even that rumor a couple years ago about how Fox doesn’t feel comfortable being involved with it while George is still alive.

Then there’s the John Landis quote about George telling him that Disney is going to put them out “the way they were,” and that was only a little over a year ago. His story would certainly seem to conflict with Pablo’s.

Suffice it to say we’ll want some kind of clarification from the panel in Orlando. It’s at least encouraging to read confirmation after all these years that the pieces of the o-neg replaced for the SE were indeed put into storage and not trashed.

I don’t get why Bill Hunt is so convinced that it won’t happen this year based on what he has said. Basically everything that he learned from those people that he referenced has already been known for a while.

I mean, I’m not saying I agree with the way the OOT has been treated, even though it isn’t my preferred version I think it should be available for those who do enjoy it, but that doesn’t change the fact that ever since the release of the SE and the Prequels, people like you have been smug and condescending toward those who like it, using big words that make you sound smart such as “objectively wrong”. Given that, I think people like Pablo, who literally gets shit everyday from people like you, as if he’s somehow responsible for your plight, have the right to get a little bit snarky.

The Star Wars fandom is by far the most bitter, antagonistic, and just generally meanspirited fandom that I’ve ever encountered. Not everybody is like that, but enough are to pretty much sour the whole thing for me.

“Objectively” and “wrong” are big words that make me sound smart? Lol.

And I don’t tweet shit at people in the industry so “people like me” is not relevant because I’m not like those people.

But he’s right. Objectively they are bad films, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy them and no one here seems to take on that ‘mentality’ - save for some trolls. I love the prequels and the Special Editions, but I feel perfectly at home on this forum, compared to the other hundreds out there.

Despite liking the SEs, I would give anything for the OOT to be released in HD and I understand why people believe they have had it “stolen from them”. These are films that influenced their entire lives… but are now conformed to a new ‘vision’. Imagine how that makes them feel… they feel cheated.

It’s not about which version you like, it’s about preserving the cultural / emotional impact of the original big three.

“That said, there is nothing wrong with mocking prequel lovers and belittling their bad taste.” - Alderaan, 2017

When your preferred version is taken away you’ll understand the pain.

But nonetheless the OUT has a historical significance and fans are upset over its current lack of (legal) availability. For Pablo to get bombarded by such fans who wants those versions is no surprise. He works for Lucasfilm so naturally he’s gonna get questions regarding a possible release of the OUT while at the same time dealing with bitter people who just want want want.

Yeah, but it’s not like someone is going in and shitting all over their beloved prequels and changing things to be more inline with the OUT. It’s not equivalent here. We actually feel like not only do they like the prequels, but with the SE, they have also destroyed what we love so much.

I’m fine with people liking the prequels up until they start trashing the OUT. Then we will have words. I make the mistake of venturing over to reddit.com/r/starwars/ sometimes. Basically I’m not a real fan and not welcome because I don’t embrace the prequels and all the changes they feel were necessary to the OT just to fit more inline with their prequels.

I agree with you. This is the reason why I can’t stand the Star Wars fandom, I’ve never seen anything like it with any other major franchise.

Oh, God.

You don’t think…

I feel like this guy pulls stuff out his ass sometimes, merely to shut people up… and I really hope he’s wrong.

I think you’re right. And it’s his own fault for engaging in topics he probably knows he shouldn’t.

If Pablo wants to avoid criticism, he really shouldn’t be commenting about the rumours. He seems to have developed a victim complex.
