That's why it's always funny to me when I hear some SE apologist make the argument that "only a small percentage of fans would buy it, most people are happy with the current release, etc."
People who say that should not be qualified as "SE apologist". I could be considered a SE apologist since I think 1997 SE did improve the films.
Yes, Han shooting first definitely improved Star Wars. Han's character now makes so much more sense.
The new Jabba scene was breathtaking AND critical.
Thank god for the new Praxis effect explosions.
I was super confused by the original opening of ESB, luckily now we can see the full Wampa, so I get it now.
Luke's scream as he jumps off the Cloud City platform definitely improved his character.
Darth Vader landing in the Star Destroyer at the end of ESB fixes a glaring problem with the original, namely what was he doing at that point in the film?
Jedi Rocks is the single biggest improvement in any film ever.
...
No question, the 1997 SE definitely improves the flawed originals.
The only two that I don't like are Greedo shooting and Luke screaming. Conditionally I don't like Jedi Rocks too... I said conditionally because the original scene was just as weird/embarrassing.
On the other hand, there are numerous visual and sound/music improvements. Especially for Tatooine scenes in IV (for example Obi-Wan's house and sandcrawler scenes). Yes some additional scenes may not be strictly essential to the story but I like to have them.
And then there is new celebration song in ROTJ which alone is enough to make me prefer 1997 version of ROTJ.
Anyway, there is really nothing to argue about here because it is purely opinion based.

Sounds like a respectable position.

My opinion wants to be the mayor of Crazytown. =(
Guys lets get back on track here.
So it would appear Disney(?) did in fact make a new scan of the '97 print.(based on info so far) I'm really hoping that means they plan on doing a restoration on the OOT.
I really don't see them doing the '97 SE and not the oot though.
All I know is that the position of Mayor of Star Wars Town is taken:
Groovy suit, man.

I agree 100%. I highly doubt that Disney would revert back to the '97 SE. It is possible that they made a scan of the '97 edition and are going to do an OT restoration from there by re-adding the real scenes and removing the crap Lucas added in '97. This would be awesome especially if they planned on making the unaltered version the official negative for the film again.
I wouldn't mind Disney doing things like fixing matte lines or using digital set extensions (cell block corridor in SW) or coloring the lightsabers in the occasional shots where they're the white stick. But anything other than fixing the small errors should be left alone
I understand that, but I still think the original movie should be preserved as is.
Same. All im saying is if they decide to "fix" anything it should be errors like that. Nothing as drastic as, say, Hayden Christansen or Greedo shooting first.
Just arrived. First in line for general admission.

Congrats!
Good luck on your mission

Can you take a picture of terrible Jabba?
Cool. Whichever version it is, should be fun.
I'm hoping it's the 97 version, at least that would end the officially mandated erasing earlier versions from history.
If it is the '97 version then I'd be very hopeful for an OOT restoration in the near future. I just hope Disney doesn't try to create some kind of weird hybrid OT/SE version by removing some changes and leaving others
There's a small lower stage cropping out from the main stage of the theater where several kids are running around playing Star Wars. They're the same age I was when the prequels came out. You guys are right - there's still hope. There is, if I may say, another Skywalker.
JEDIT: Literally, because, y'know, Luke's son and all.
The thing is, the post-'97 versions ('04 and '11) were never marketed as Special Edition or any specific version of the movies, so I can easily see a situation, where the people currently in charge of this new restoration aren't even aware of any of the subsequent changes and they think that by making a restoration of the 97SE, they are making a restoration of the "George Lucas approved director's cut" version, which they think is the same version seen on the '04 DVD and '11 BD.

Considering how many people would have to be involved. (possibly including George Lucas being informed) That all probably LOVE film, and very likely Star Wars...I think it's a little doubtful that NO ONE on the team would raise this issue.
edit: Hell they'd have to go actually physically get the negatives at Lucasfilms for scanning...someone at lucasfilms would raise the issue.
Well, it's on right now... ;) Only 2 more hours to go...

Spy cameras are cheap and plentiful these days. ;)
Where were you in '77?
Does anyone hear think that Disney might not ever release the OT out of respect for Lucas' "true vision" for the films
