Hardcoded in the TE bluray but not the EE bluray, I believe there are EE only scenes that are softsubs only, IIRC.

My EE Blu-ray collection has hardcoded Elvish subs.

Curious, if V1 is a slightly lower bitrate and not much difference in any other way from V3 why is V3 almost twice the size?

V1 is lower bitrate, the letterboxed area is cropped, and only has English audio.

Interesting, seems like the NA release has hardsubs but other reigons do not.

I read in a forum that the USA BD’s have hardcoded Elvish subs but the European BD’s don’t.

Oh, interesting! Well, if one of you would like to send me a private link to your full MakeMKV rips of your non-US FOTR Blu-ray discs, I could try to include the soft subs in a future release instead of the hardcoded subs! (If that’s something that people want).

Skimmed through the V3 file (single 44GB version) and it looks great, barring some compression artifacts that are likely only noticeable from looking at it too closely on my laptop monitor. Looking forward to giving it a proper watch!

Pretty sure essentially everything usable was thrown in the extended cuts.

No other deleted scenes were released officially; closest you’ll get would be snippets of things in the making of documentaries, but I’m not sure if there’s anything usable in those.

Brilliant work!
Am I right in thinking that v3 can be burnt to a bd-r dl 50GB disc and play on standard blu-ray players? if so it surpasses my extended edition in all ways haha, no need for disc swapping.
I am curious as to the difficulty of joining the two halves, did it require much wrangling?
-Thanks

FOTR is an easy stitch-together, actually, as the audio and video both end at the cut to black. Haven’t checked that part of 44rh1n’s release to be certain that’s what he did, but I don’t see why it’d be any different (at work so can’t check now). [JEDIT: Yep, the disc change point looks and sounds exactly as it should in 44rh1n’s version, at least on the “V3” single 44GB file version. I’d expect the smaller “V1” single 22GB file version to be the same.]

TTT and ROTK, however, have the audio continuing on after the cut to black, playing over the “insert disc 2” screen, so they require an L-cut, meaning you have to overlap the disc 1 audio with the beginning of the disc 2 audio, which requires audio reencoding.

I’ve got audio tracks for TTT and ROTK that are properly stitched together like this that someone made for kk650’s regrades and shared on tehparadox, but I can’t recall if they’re lossless DTS-HD, regular DTS, or AC3, or whether they’re 6.1 or 5.1 - but if you’re interested I can share them. They should work with any stitch-together of TTT and ROTK that just join the two at the cut (so there would be no black screen whatsoever between the last frame of picture on disc 1 and the first frame of picture on disc 2).

I finally got a chance to watch this last night, and I have to say…absolutely stellar job by 44rh1n. One of the best, and most needed, fan restorations I’ve ever seen. Given how important, and beloved, this film is, and how egregious the green tint which plagues the EE BD, I’m frankly surprised this release has not gotten more attention here.

The colours, as near as I can tell, are a near perfect match for the EE DVD and TE BD. And anyone who’s familiar with the TE BD know its problems with edge enhancement, but 44rn1n has done an amazing job of ameliorating that…as least as I believe is possible with this release. In addition to the colours being what they should be be, the muddiness and lack of definition in the extended scenes has been greatly improved.

Really top notch all around, including the little details…including all the commentary tracks, removing any black screen between the disc transition, no cropping, etc. A job very well done and highly recommended.

44rh1n, just a couple questions…as you know, in addition to the significant additional scenes and alterations in the EE, there are many minor, almost unnoticeable changes from the TE…sometimes something a little as lingering for half a second at the end of a shot. How did you handle these?

Also, now that you have a cap of the Netflix TE (which I’ve watched as is an improvement I agree), any plans to upgrade this release anytime soon?

Again, much thanks for taking this on and giving it so much care and thought.

Thanks for the kind words!

If there was ever a TE shot that wasn’t long enough then I would simply use the EE shot and then corrected the colors, just like how I addressed any of the other extended scenes.

And yes, I’ll be updating this release at some point in the future. Although, I no longer have as much free time as I did when I originally performed the bulk of the work, so the next release will be at least a few months away. But it’ll happen, eventually.

So you do have a Netflix version of Fellowship? I thought you said you didn’t.

I didn’t at the time of the release of this restoration, but I do now. However, it isn’t a perfect recording. It’s a 60i capture that’s been converted to 23.976fps progressive. If anyone has the ability to natively capture at 23.976fps progressive in ProRes, it will surely be an improvement over mine.

Mae govannen, mellon! Excellent! My favorite of all the LotR movies, I hated the fact they screwed up and ended up with that green tinted color in the movie, I’m really looking forward to watch this film with the corrected colors, great work 44rh1n! Can I get the link to download this?

I just checked out the 2-disc version of this, and it’s already my new go-to version of FOTR:EE. Previously I’d used You_Too’s blanket color correction, but there were some shot-specific issues in that, and most notably, it turned Merry’s waistcoat orange. I’d seen other attempts that managed the shot-specific issues better, but they seemed pretty subjective/haphazard in their correction choices overall. This one seems to be a great balance of handling the varying correction needs through the film, while sticking closely to a consistent, objective reference. And Merry’s waistcoat is yellow again 😉

Great work!
