It's actually just the same story, which is that Lucas has been mulling it over and now that Avatar is successful he's mulling a bit harder.

Because the Daily Mail is know for it's accurate reporting...

So I suppose if the Daily Mail reported that "Water Is Wet", then it wouldn't be?

The National Enquirer could report that the Sky is Blue and the Grass is Green, but I still wouldn't use them as the defacto word on the next (re)release of a hollywood film.

Here's their current showbiz news:

Of course George Lucas is going to make 3D Star Wars at some point, but please don't expect the first word on such a thing to come from The Daily Fail.

Wow. Oh CBC....

Seriously though, the CG musical thing confuses me. So random. Maybe now that Lucas gets his musical fix he can cut  back the ROTJ SE sequence.

It would not be his first musical.  That was American Graffiti.  A musical in his own words.

Where do they find these stupid reporters?

Well, he is working on a CG musical, it's just not Redtails.

And AG is not a musical, any more than any film is today--it just uses pop music in place of a traditional score.

I think Lucas also said star wars was a musical like Peter and the Wolf.

Clearly a lot of people including yourself don't see Graffiti as a musical.  But i think Lucas called it a musical with wall to wall rock and roll music and dancing cars.

No word on who shoots first, but want to swoop down into the Death Star trenches in 3D anyway?

Hollywood Reporter sources indicate all six of the live-action “Star Wars” movies will hit cinemas in 3D, starting in roughly 18 months.

Now the bad news.

“The Phantom Menace” will be he first out of the gate in early 2012, according to the report. Then, if box office warrants, “Attack of the Clones” in early 2013, “Revenge of the Sith” in early 2014, “A New Hope” in 2015, “Empire Strikes Back” in 2016 and “Return of the Jedi” in 2017.

We are going to be SO OLD!

The story indicates the movies are being spaced out this way because it takes about a year to suck each movie into the third dimension.

George Lucas says one hold up has been the wait for enough cinemas to finally upgrade to 3D capability.

Lucas told the New York Times last month that all six movies (in 2D) will be hitting Blu-ray in 2011.

Find all of The Hollywood Reporter’s story on the matter here.

Each conversion takes at least a year to complete, with Lucas personally overseeing the process to make sure each one is as perfected as possible. Lucas has said that the "Avatar" experience convinced him that "Star Wars" was ready for the state-of-the-art 3D treatment.

Also pushing the timetable is a potential breakthrough in 3D television technology. With Samsung penetrating the market with 50,000-plus 3D-equipped televisions, and Sony planning to send its version to market in the coming months, the home-viewing experience could be primed for 3D DVD versions of the classic films by the time the new 3D series runs its course.

Lucas is purportedly queuing up the theatrical re-releases as a lead-in to the ultimate home viewing experience. Beyond that, the property would launch to all other 3D media.

Check the official site. Its for real now....

Mixed feelings about starting with Episode I. But at least 2016 or so should be cool.

You beat me to it, None! I just saw Nikki Finke's tweet about it and raced over here.

I noticed recently that the (reportedly terrible) 3D conversion of the new Clash of the Titans is hitting Blu-ray 3D soon. So I guess hollywood doesn't intend to just sit on the converted movies after they've left 3D theaters. The amount of money from double-dips is just too hard to resist, regardless of the product's actual quality.

ETA several things:

I can see it now.... 2017 rolls around and the converted Star Wars saga is finally complete. Then, a few years later, BAM, Episode VII in native 3D. Just like Lucas "converted" the OT to make them look like modern movies with cgi and digital sound (the SE) and then a few years later, BAM, Episode I with those very same dewbacks and rontos.

All I have to say is that I'm filing this converted saga news under Do Not Want. I don't care how good a job they do, it's still just a 2D movie converted to 3D after the fact. One native eye-view will never look as good as two.

What does everything think this bodes for the OOT? By 2013 we could have an updated Making of Jedi and the first two prequels in 3D and still no OOT blu-ray.

The New York Times ran a piece on it today in their Arts section.  I had this to say in the comments section;

Here's hoping they don't pull it because I put in a link.

Interestingly enough, one of their other Star Wars articles (Blu-ray releases) had a fair amount of detractors with regard to the SEs.

I saw that our man KenKraly came to the rescue touting the SEs and how we shouldn't complain, since they're the preferred versions. He did throw us a bone, however, saying the originals should be preserved.

A full year between each one? By the time they get to Jedi, the Menace 3D might be totally outdated. (And Lucas will be well into his 70s, pacing around his compound still struggling with his ideal Sy Snootles, like a real wacko)

Absolutely terrible. The PT ruined everything once, now anyone that is a glutton for punishment gets to see them altered AGAIN to this 3D fad crap.

The article stated the rest of the films will come out one each year "depending on how well TPM does."

Ummmm.... Who the FRAK wants to pay Lucas AGAIN to sit through TPM, even if it's 3D?

Nancy Reagan was right. JUST SAY NO.

The only 3D movies I've seen have been shot in 3D (Avatar) or have been animated (Toy Story 3, Up, How to Train your Dragon, Beowulf) and have been a pretty good experience. But I'm kind of over the 3D thing already. I'll see an Avatar type movie but the type of 3D employed in Toy Story 3 means I'll rather watch it in 2D and save some money.

I haven't seen any of the post-converted 3D movies not because I'm a 3D snob but because the movies looked garbage (Clash of the Titans, The Last Airbender) but from all the reports and reviews I've read the post conversion looks like crap even for the movies that it wasn't a rush job cash grab like the aforementioned titles.

So I don't see how any good can come from Star Wars in (post converted) 3D other than making Lucasfilm 6 more large piles of cash. And even then I don't think the first three will make as much they hope. Who will go see them other than die hards? The general public is definitely burnt out on the prequels. So maybe the final three won't even get released.

At the end of last year when a lot of movie nerds were bemoaning 3D cinema I was in favour of the wait and see approach but now I just wish it would go away. Sure Scorsese is making a 3D film movie and other big name director will experiment with it soon enough (Fincher, Scott) I highly doubt that my enjoyment of films like Black Swan, The Social Network and True Grit will be lessened by the fact that they are only in 2D.

Though I'll see Scorsese's Hugo Cabret because he shot it that way.

Oh wait I'll probably see Jackass 3D because... why not?

Yeah, I don't think 3D will completely take over. Color didn't stop filmmakers from shooting in black and white. Super 35 didn't stop them from shooting in cinemascope. Digital didn't stop them from shooting on film.
